October 28, 2018 First Lutheran Church Saint Peter, Minnesota Service of Holy Communion Reformation & Celebration Sunday Pastor Gwen Hermanson & Cantor Emily Bruflat An asterisk (*) invites you to stand in body or in spirit. GATHERING IN GOD S PRESENCE Prelude: Wake up to a fiery setting of our gathering hymn, no. 665: "Rise, Shine, You People!" Prelude Wojtkiewiecz Welcome * Confession and Forgiveness Setting by David Cherwien All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the assisting minister begins. The congregation reads the bold print. Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. 1

Gathering Hymn: Gathering Hymn: Commonly chosen for Reformation Sunday, this celebratory hymn uplifts our Celebration Sunday and tells how we are called to "go out and tell the story of Jesus' glory" and share this good news to "all the world" as a part of our mission as stewards of the church. OT Reading: This passage speaks not only of the southern kingdom, Judah, and its homecoming from exile in Babylon, but also of the northern kingdom ( Israel or Ephraim ) and its restoration. The northern tribes of Israel had been lost in exile to Assyria more than a century before Jeremiah prophesied. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. *Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *Kyrie from Liturgy Setting One, front of hymnal, page 98 *Gathering Hymn no. 665 *Prayer of the Day HEARING GOD S WORD Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 37:7-9 7 Thus says the LORD: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, Save, O LORD, your people, the remnant of Israel. 8 See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Rise, Shine, You People! Psalm 126 Spoken responsively by verse between leader and congregation 1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations, The LORD has done great things for them. 2

3 The LORD has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed. 4 Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses of the Negeb. 5 Those who sowed with tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. *Gospel Acclamation Gospel: Bartimaeus comes to Jesus with faith, asking that he might see again. Recognizing Jesus identity, Bartimaeus is the first person to call him Son of David in the Gospel of Mark. *Gospel Mark 10:46-52 P The holy gospel according to Mark, the tenth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. 46 As [Jesus] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart; get up, he is calling you. 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, let me see again. 52 Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. 3

RESPONDING TO GOD S WORD Children s Music: This familiar song is found in the "Vocation, Ministry" section of our hymnal and is a simple yet profound response to God's calling in our lives. Hymn: We've been singing these words since mid-september, and today, we sing them to a more recentlycomposed Spanish tune. It is a reminder that as stewards, we are called to dedicate our hands, voices, time, talents, treasures, and all that is ours to God. Children s Musical Reflection (10:30 a.m.) Children s Sermon Sermon Refer to Hymn no. 574 for the text. Here I Am, Lord Daniel L. Schutte Pastor Gwen Hermanson Pastor Gwen Hermanson * Hymn no. 583 Take My Life, that I May Be *The Apostles Creed Front of hymnal, page 105 I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Prayers of Intercession After each petition L Lord in your mercy C Hear our prayer *Sharing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. You are invited to share God s peace with those around you. 4

Offering: "We All Are One in Mission" is yet another vocational hymn with a call to unite our "various gifts" to "touch the lives of others with God's surprising grace." This tune is more commonly associated with "The Church's One Foundation" (hymn no. 654), another Reformation favorite and a personification of the church, created by Jesus, to which we all belong and support with our gifts. Offering of Our Gifts & Noisy Offering Music at the Offering We All Are One in Mission *Offering Prayer Refer to Hymn no. 576 for the text. SHARING THE LORD S SUPPER *The Great Thanksgiving & Preface Front of hymnal, page 107 * Holy, Holy, Holy Front of hymnal, page 108 *Eucharistic Prayer *Lord s Prayer Front of hymnal, page 112, left column Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Setting by Stan Pethal Instrumental Ensemble Distribution of Holy Communion All are welcome to this meal. This morning, we commune by means of intinction (dipping the bread into the chalice). An usher will guide you forward. You will be given a piece of bread and offered a choice of two chalices. The wine is in a silver chalice; the grape juice is in a glass chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you are unable to come forward, let an usher know, and communion will be brought to you. Parents, please assist children when they come forward to extend their hands if they are to receive the bread and wine. 5

Communion: These two hymns, each paired with a different tune than is typical, both detail what it is like to follow Christ's servant heart in caring for all and in fulfilling God's will on earth. Music during Communion Hymn Lord of Light Marty Haugen Hymn insert O Christ, Your Heart, Compassionate Found in the back cover of hymnal in folder pocket *Post-Communion Blessing and Prayer DEPARTING TO SERVE GOD S WORLD Sending Hymn: We last sang this hymn at the close of our Pentecost celebration about the Spirit flame within us, guiding us in our Christian vocation. This hymn tells of the Spirit's presence in our lives, calling us to "be the hands of Christ" and "to serve in peace, the gospel to proclaim." *Sending Hymn no. 551 *Announcements *Dismissal A: We join in proclaiming: The Spirit Sends Us Forth to Serve C: Renewed by Christ in Word, water, bread and wine, we go in peace to serve our community and the world. People try to hush him up because by addressing Jesus as Son of David he is making a politically dangerous claim that Jesus is the rightful king. Could our prayers ever be heard as a threat to unjust powers-that-be? Bartimaeus won t give up or go away quietly, but repeats his call for help more loudly. Do we ask so boldly? And are our prayers an honest answer to Jesus question, What do you want me to do for you? (from Sundays and Seasons). Fellowship and flowers are provided by Mary Long in honor of Gordon Long.
