3 July 25, 2018 We just completed our fiscal year and I want to give you a financial update. Once the numbers for the parish and the school have been finalized and approved by the finance council, I will give you a more detailed report. In the meantime, I have good news! MONDAY, JULY 30 8:00 a.m. Mass (+Kurt Engstrom) TUESDAY, JULY 31 8:00 a.m. Mass (+Dorothy and Michelle Wagner) 5:15 p.m. Mass (+Norb Kenney) WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1 8:00 a.m. Mass (+Gordon LaValla) Summer Stretch 8:30 a.m. THURSDAY, AUGUST 2 First, our Sunday giving is up approximately 4% over last year and 2% over budget. 8:00 a.m. Mass (+Joseph Ficker) Women s Bible Study 8:00 a.m. Second, our net income for the parish and the Women s Scripture Study 8:30 a.m. school combined will be in the black. Prayers for Priests 1:00 p.m. Compared to our substantial loss last year, this is wonderful news. Even though cash was tight at times, we did not have to use our line of credit. Note that we are still recovering from our substantial loss for last fiscal year, and we still owe the Archdiocese about $175,000. Overall, it has been a good year financially, and we are heading in the right direction! Thank you for your generosity and your willingness to commit your financial treasure to fulfilling our mission to make disciples. Please continue to pray for our parish leadership as we strive to be good stewards of your treasure. 4 This a safe place to enjoy free coffee and conversation for those going through memory changes and their friends. Memory Café happens the second Tuesday of every month from 10:00 am to 11:30 a.m. at the Hastings Senior Center, Room 108. You may have noticed there have been some Sundays this summer (this weekend included!) where we have not sung a closing song. The official document on how to celebrate Mass talks about music all over the place. For instance: Opening Song: When the people are gathered, as the Priest enters with the Deacon and ministers, the Entrance Chant begins. Spotlight advertisers are chosen at random. New Patients Welcome! Responsorial Psalm: It is preferable for the Responsorial Psalm to be sung, at least as far as the people s response is concerned. Communion Song: While the Priest is receiving the Sacrament, the Communion Chant is begun, its purpose being to express the spiritual union of the communicants. But the Church says absolutely nothing about a closing song or recessional! The celebration of Mass envisions our union in the reception of Holy Communion, and the blessing and dismissal which marks the end of Mass. While a closing song is certainly a venerable tradition, there is something touching about the last noise made by God s people at Mass being a response to Christ s command to go out into the world. Christopher Johnston, D.D.S. SEAS Parishioner 952 Hwy 55 Suite 104, NATIONAL SIDEWALK COUNSELING & DIRECT ACTION SYMPOSIUM AUGUST 2-4, 2018 Inspirational general sessions.
