1 Order of Worship World Communion Sunday October 1, 2017 Westminster Presbyterian Church Charlottesville, Virginia If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work. Thich Nhat Hanh Opening Voluntary Diferencias Naji Hakim *Call to Worship The God of creation makes us one body! Let us join hearts and voices in praise of the Lord! The God of Christ makes us one in the Spirit! Let us join hearts and voices in praise of the Lord! *Hymn O God of Every Nation No. 289 Prayer of Confession Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. The peace that Christ gives is to guide us in the decisions we make, for it is to this peace that God has called us together into one body. Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. With his own body he broke down the walls of separation. By his death on the cross Christ destroyed our divisions. Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. Silent Prayers

2 Sung Response Russian Orthodox Chant Assurance of Forgiveness People of God, all of us together have received God s mercy in Christ. We pray for peace, the blessed peace that comes from making justice, to cover and embrace us. Have mercy, Lord! We pray for power, the power that will sustain your people s witness until your kingdom come. Kyrie eleison! Communion Hymns Eat This Bread HS No. 60 Come and Fill HS No. 61 Prayer after Communion Holy God, you have fed us with the bounty of good things, bread and cup, Word and song. Send us out into the world eager to rebuild the cities you have made, and ready to receive strangers, so that we celebrate at all times and in all places the peace which is life in you. Amen. *Hymn In Christ There Is No East or West No. 440 *The Charge and Benediction Closing Voluntary Batalla Naji Hakim Today we celebrate World Communion Sunday. In 1936 the first World Communion Sunday was celebrated in Presbyterian churches in the United States and overseas. In 1940 it was adopted officially by the National Council of Churches. The day has taken on new relevancy and depth of meaning in a world where globalization often has undermined peace and justice and in a time when fear divides the peoples of God s earth. On this day, we celebrate our oneness in Christ, the Prince of Peace, in the midst of the world we are called to serve a world ever more in need of peacemaking. Our prayers and music are taken from resources from around the world and the communion table is set remembering we are part of a global community. Sharing of the Lord s Supper At the 8:30 service, communion will be served by intinction. Please come forward using the center aisle and use a side aisle to return to your seat. Gluten-free wafers are individually wrapped and available in each bread basket. If you prefer to receive communion in the pew, please indicate this to an usher. At the 11:00 service, communion elements will be distributed by the elders. Gluten-free wafers are individually wrapped and available in each bread basket. Words such as Bread of heaven or Cup of salvation may be answered with Amen or Thanks be to God.
