2 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT February 18, st Readiing: Genesis 9: nd Readiing: 1 Peter 3:18-22 Gospel: Mark 1:12-15 FROM THE PASTOR As we begin the season of Lent, we are also about to begin the parish phase of the annual diocesan Catholic Charity Appeal. One of the pillars of Lenten observance is almsgiving and the Charity Appeal is a great opportunity to support a fund that assists over 200,000 people in the State of Rhode Island each year. Most of you have already received a letter from the bishop with a donation card that you may have returned directly to the diocese with your pledge or donation. I thank you for your donation. In prayerfully considering how much we are able to contribute to the Appeal, I believe it is important for us to know where the money goes and how it is used throughout the state. Next weekend I will give a brief overview of the programs and agencies that benefit from Charity Appeal donations and we will do the in-pew solicitation. There will be envelopes available in the pews for you to make your pledge or one-time gift to the Appeal. Our parish goal this year is $134, Last year we fell a little short of our goal, but I am confident that if every family in our parish made some donation according to their ability to give, we would have no problem surpassing our goal. Every donation is important and makes a difference. If you did not give last year, please consider contributing to this year s Appeal. If you did give last year, thank you for your generosity and please let us count on your continued support. Most of us at Holy Apostles live comfortably and have been blessed in many ways. Let us be mindful of those who struggle or who turn to the Church for pastoral needs. Our generosity is a powerful sign of our gratitude for God s goodness to us. Msgr. Theroux LENT 2018 FORMED is a great resource for Lent! FORMED is an excellent, Catholic, online resource of hundreds of dvds, videos, audio books and other media that is free and available to us by following these directions: 1. Go to Formed website: 2. From the home page, about half-way down, click on: Register 3. Our parish code is: 726P2D 4. Enter your own address 5. You will receive a confirmation with a link to finish your registration. Try FORMED, you ll like it! OPERATION RICE BOWL ALMSGIVING ~ Operation Rice Bowl is an opportunity to put that loose change at the end of the day to good use. Money collected during the forty days of Lent will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services. Catholic Relief Services was established in 1943 and is the official overseas relief and development agency of the Catholic Church here in the U. S. The agency works to alleviate human suffering, to foster justice and charity, and to enhance the development of people around the world. This assistance is provided on the basis of need, not creed, race or ethnicity. PRIVATE PRAYER before the BLESSED SACRAMENT ~ Quiet time or desert time alone in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is another way to get in touch with the spiritual side of our lives. The Community Life Center s main entrance is open for morning Mass and remains open until 5:00 pm. (During the 4-5pm CCD class time please ring the doorbell and a staff member will let you in.) STATIONS OF THE CROSS ~ THURSDAYS: February 22, March 1, 15, 22 at 6:30pm ~The Stations or Way of the Cross is the most traditional of all Lenten practices. CATHOLIC SCHOOL (GRADES K-8) T UITION ASSISTANCE The underlying premise of the Catholic School Tuition Assistance Program is that financial assistance is based on need. In order to insure objectivity, the Diocesan Catholic School Office s policy requires that parents complete a financial aid application form that may be obtained from the Catholic school the child attends or plans to attend next year. The deadline for submitting applications is mid-february. In addition, a letter requesting consideration for assistance must be submitted to Msgr. Theroux as soon as possible but no later than the end of April. A second premise of the Catholic School Tuition Assistance Program is that it is meant to assist those families who are actively involved in the practice of the faith and in the life of their respective parish. Irrespective of the financial need, the following policies must be followed in order to be considered for financial assistance. --Families requesting assistance must follow church law on fulfilling the "Sunday" obligation to attend Mass. If the child lives with two parents who are Catholic, both parents must attend. It should also be by way of exception that a family attends Mass in a parish other than Holy Apostles. --At least one parent must be involved in a parish program/ministry. --Families must be regular contributors to the parish budget using the weekly envelopes or through Faith Direct. Stewardship If you or someone you know has a loved one serving in our armed forces, please send their names with rank and branch of military to cad@holyapostles.com and we will remember them in our prayers and print in our parish bulletin once a month. Time and Talent - We wish to thank all those parishioners who are always so willing to pitch in and lend a helping hand. Their participation contributes to the vibrancy of our community. Treasure Thank you for your financial support. FAITH DIRECT - ONLINE GIVING APOSTLES OF MERCY Thanks to all for your ongoing weekly contributions of food items for our needy. During the month of February, we will be collecting used Bibles only for Father Henry s Prison Ministry. This secure program works directly with your bank or credit card. All transactions are done electronically, debiting your bank account or charging your credit card for the amount to which you have agreed in writing. You can enroll in Faith Direct or make changes to your account dates or contributions online at or call Holy Apostles parish code is RI18.
