For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest: eluia, alleluia! 2. O may thy servants, faithful, true, and bold, strive for the kingdom as the saints of old, and win with them the glorious crown of gold: eluia, alleluia! 3. O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine, yet all are one in thee, for all are thine: eluia, alleluia! 4. But lo! There breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. eluia, alleluia! 5. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. 3 The Collect Gathering Prayer is said together / Hei konei te inoi o te rä Almighty God, your saints join with you in the eternal song of praise and forever reflect your glory; may our lives be worthy of those who have gone before us, full of faith, courage and holiness, singing your song to a troubled world. Through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated for the Readings / Nga Karaipiture E noho Reader A Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah [Chapter 25:6-9] On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Reader Thanks be to God. A Reading from the Revelation to St John [Chapter 21:1-6a] Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. At 10am we sing this hymn in preparation for the Gospel Please take note of your nearest exit. 4 1. I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wanderer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary, when Bethlehem s manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and labored, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2. I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for yet the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is here. 3. I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth, will answer: At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King! Please stand and turn to face the Gospel and the Cross... / Ka tū te katoa Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John [chapter 11:32-44] Praise and Glory to God. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead A member of the Commu nity of the Cross of Nails Page 4

5 for four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ the Word. There follows the sermon / Te Kauwhau. The preacher today is Revd. Canon Sue Pickering Please stand for the Affirmation of Faith / Te Whakapono Liturgist Let us declare our faith in God. We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Please sit. A Time of Prayer / Nga Inoi a te Iwi Liturgist Let us pray for the church and the world, giving thanks for God's goodness Our intercessions end with The Lord's Prayer/Te Inoi a te Ariki Kua akona nei tatou e to tatou Ariki, ka inoi/waiata tatou E tō mātou Matua i te rangi, kia tapu tōu Ingoa. Yours also the chiefly rule, the strength, and the glory. Ever and ever and ever. Amen. Please take note of your nearest exit. Page 5 Emergency assembly point: Vets for Pets car park

6 Please stand for the Ministry of the Sacrament / Te Minitatanga o te Hakarameta We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. Kia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Atua ki a koutou. The peace of God be with you. And also with you. Deacon Let us offer one-another a sign of peace. During the offertory hymn, a collection is taken up for our mission and ministry as the cathedral. Thank you for your gift. 1. The strife is o er, the battle done; now is the Victor s triumph won; O let the song of praise be sung: eluia! eluia! eluia! 2. Death s mightiest powers have done their worst, and Jesus hath his foes dispersed; let shouts of praise and joy outburst: eluia! eluia! eluia! 3. On the third morn he rose again, glorious in majesty to reign; O let us swell the joyful strain: eluia! eluia! eluia! 4. Lord, by the stripes which wounded thee. from death s dread sting thy servants free that we may live, and sing to thee. eluia! eluia! eluia! The Preparation of the Gifts / Te Whakatikatika I Te Ohaoha As the grain once scattered in the fields and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside are now reunited on this table in bread and wine; as the offerings of your people are now presented, so Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together from the corners of the earth and your kingdom come, your will be done. Amen. you have made is good. Your love endures for ever. The Great Thanksgiving / Te Whakawhetai Nui Christ is risen He is risen indeed! Lift up your hearts to heaven Where Christ in glory reigns Let us give thanks to God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his A member of the Commu nity of the Cross of Nails Page 6

7 arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. And now we give you thanks for the glorious pledge of the hope of our calling which you have given us in your saints; that, following their example and strengthened by their fellowship, we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us, and with them receive the unfading crown of glory. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying/singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, to remember me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. [silence] Please take note of your nearest exit. Page 7 Emergency assembly point: Vets for Pets car park

11 The Weekly letter is from Archdeacon Trevor Dear Parishioners, Today, in this Cathedral Parish, we observe two Feast Days of our Church with our observance this morning of Saints' Day and this afternoon and evening of Souls' Day. Although in the New Testament "saints" refers to all Christians, the church soon gave special honour to the heroes of the faith, especially martyrs. In the early church, a feast commemorating all martyrs seems to have been observed in association with Pentecost. The ex-tension of the feast to include all the saints and its observance on 1 November emerged some time in the eighth century. The feast allows us to express our sense of communion with all those who have gone before us, whether known or unknown, who have witnessed to their faith in Christ, especially those who have personally inspired or influenced us in our faith walk. As Saints Day came to regard "saint" to mean the heroes of the faith, Odilo, the abbot of Cluny in the first half of the eleventh century, provided for the commemoration of all the departed on 2 November, and this Benedictine tradition spread throughout the church. The feast was abolished in England at the Reformation, but has been restored to many Anglican calendars as a general commemoration of the faithful departed. This is what we do this afternoon and evening as we particularly remember those who have died in the past year, but also allow for those who are dearly remembered who have died at any time. Blessings, Trevor. A TIME OF PRAYER AND FASTING* Be part of this intentional petition for the Holy Spirit s movement in the appointment of a new Dean for Taranaki Cathedral.
