Nau mai; haere mai; welcome to Taranaki Cathedral To be as Christ in the Community Hey, young people here today - welcome - especially any visiting our interim cathedral! We have great groups for you to be a part of. Please come and meet us by the sound desk this morning... Cath, family worker :-) Welcome on 8th July 2018, 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Te Rātapu Tekau mā Whā o he wā noa iho Our 10am service commences with this hymn 1. Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken, formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may st smile at all thy foes. 2. See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river, ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3. Saviour, if of Zion s city, I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling s pleasure, boasting pomp and empty show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion s children know. I runga i te Ingoa o te Atua, te Matua, te Tama me te Wairua Tapu. Amine. (In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.) Many of the people who heard Jesus 8am Hymns were amazed and asked, "How can he Offertory: Glorious things do all this? 2 Liturgist The invitation is given to every person by Jesus Christ: "Come to me! Follow me! Be my disciples!" We come to this place, to this time, at the invitation of Jesus Christ. Liturgist In the name of Christ, we accept the invitation to discipleship. Liturgist In the name of Christ, as his disciples, we worship and praise God. Liturgist In the midst of a world where cruelty abounds, we proclaim the God of Compassion. Liturgist In the midst of despair that threatens to swallow up whole lives, whole peoples, we proclaim the God of Hope. Liturgist In the midst of indifference and apathy, we proclaim the God of Love. Liturgist Come, let us worship together and share our witness of God's living presence in the world. The Confession and Absolution / Te Hohou-i-te-rongo Please sit. Liturgist Jesus says, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.' So let us turn away from sin and turn to the Lord, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. We need your healing, merciful God: give us true repentance. Some sins are plain to us; some escape us, some we cannot face. Forgive us; set us free to hear your word to us; set us free to serve you. God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself. [Silence] Through Christ, God has put away your sin: approach your God in peace. Amen. A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 2

The Gloria is sung, as a cry of thanksgiving to God. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Liturgist Kia mau te rongo o te Karaiti ki o tatou ngakau. The peace of Christ rule in our hearts. The word of Christ dwell in us richly. The Collect Gathering Prayer is said together / Hei konei te inoi o te rä Caring God, you equip us with all we truly need in the business of our daily lives; turn us to you in prayer that we might trust in your provision and hold only to those things of true value. Through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated for the Readings / Nga Karaipiture E noho Reader A Reading from the second book of Samuel [chapter 5:1-5,9-10] Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, Look, we are your bone and flesh. For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The Lord said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah for thirty-three years. David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David. David built the city all around from Please take note of your nearest exit. Page 3 Emergency assembly point: Vets for Pets car park

the Millo inwards. And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Reader Thanks be to God. A Reading from the second epistle of Paul to the Corinthians [chapter 12:2-10] I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given to me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. At 10am we sing this hymn in preparation for the Gospel 1. We have a gospel to proclaim, good news for all throughout the earth; the gospel of a Saviour s name: we sing his glory, tell his worth. 2. Tell of his birth at Bethlehem, not in a royal house or hall, but in a stable dark and dim, the Word made flesh, a light for all. 3. Tell of his death at Calvary, hated by those he came to save; in lonely suffering on the cross: for all he loved, his life he gave. 4. Tell of that glorious Easter morn, empty the tomb, for he was free; he broke the power of death and hell, that we might share his victory. 5. Tell of his reign at God s right hand, by all creation glorified. He sends his Spirit on his Church, to live for him, the Lamb who died. 6. Now we rejoice to name him King: Jesus is Lord of all the earth. This gospel message we proclaim: We sing his glory, tell his worth. A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 4

Please stand and turn to face the Gospel and the Cross... / Ka tu te katoa Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark [chapter 6:1-13] (Sung at the 10am Service) Praise and Glory to God. He left that place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us? And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them, Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house. And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. This is the Gospel of Christ. (Sung at the 10am Service) Praise to Christ the Word. There follows the sermon / Te Kauwhau The preacher today is Revd. Mele Prescott Please stand for the Affirmation of Faith / Te Whakapono You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved your love for us in Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose again. You are with us now. You are God. You, O God, are Holy Spirit. You empower us to be your gospel in the world. You reconcile and heal; you overcome death. You are our God. We worship you. Please take note of your nearest exit. 7 2. O let me hear thee speaking, in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. 3. O Jesus, thou hast promised, to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory, there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised, to serve thee to the end: O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend. 4. O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly, is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend. 8 sin. His cross has taken our guilt away. You send your Holy Spirit to strengthen and to guide, to warn and to revive your Church. Therefore, with all your witnesses who surround us on every side, countless as heaven s stars, we praise you for our creation and our calling, with loving and with joyful hearts: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, most holy, in your Son, who washed his disciples feet. I am among you, he said, as one who serves. On that night before he died he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper, he took the cup, and gave you thanks. He gave it to them and said: Drink this. It is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you, shed for all, to forgive sin; do this to remember me. Therefore with this bread and wine we recall your goodness to us. God of the past and present, we your people remember your Son. We thank you for his cross and rising again, we take courage from his ascension; we look for his coming in glory and in him we give ourselves to you. Send your Holy Spirit, that we who receive Christ s body may indeed be the body of Christ, and we who share his cup draw strength from the one true vine. Called to follow Christ, help us to reconcile and unite. Called to suffer, give us hope in our calling. For you, the heavenly one, make all things new; you are the beginning and the end, the last and the first. Praise, glory and love be yours, this and every day, from us and all people, here and everywhere. Amen. [silence] The Breaking of the Bread / Ka Whawhati I te Taro The bread we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. The cup of blessing for which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ. A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 8

The Weekly letter is from Archdeacon Trevor Dear Parishioners, As I start into my second month with you here as -incharge I am taking this opportunity to bring you up to date with what is happening in relation to the position of the Dean of this Cathedral. As announced at the time of my appointment, Ms Mary Bourke was engaged to head up a Review Team to help identify challenges and opportunities that should be addressed prior to a new permanent Dean being appointed and the best structure to enable the exciting vision for the Cathedral once the regeneration project is complete. Mary has drawn up a survey that the members of Chapter, Vestry, Clergy and Staff were invited to complete and she has done an analysis of the feedback and is now undertaking a number of in-depth interviews with some of those people. Once the review is complete, its findings will be examined by the Bishop, Wardens, Vestry and Chapter and its recommendations on what configuration of the Cathedral team will best suit the present and future ministry needs of the parish and the diocese, sought to be implemented. Once that is done we will be looking to get underway the process for the appointment of a new permanent Dean. This process involves an assessment of the financial viability of the Parish, the preparation of a Parish Profile, the Convening of the Board of Nomination to consider appropriate candidates, then the short-listing and interview of candidates with a mind to nominate an individual to the Bishop for him to formally invite to fill the position. We invite your prayers for this process and all involved. Blessings, Trevor. Do get in touch... We would love to hear from you Office: or admin@taranakicathedral.org.nz Trevor Harrison : Canon Pastor Bill : Pastoral Minister Ailsa : Canon Sue: If you are interested in getting more involved with our parish, please fill out a yellow card Please take note of your nearest exit.
