The Episcopaper September 2016 St. John s Snohomish Serving our community since 1892 St. John s Episcopal Church 913 Second Street Snohomish, WA Phone: office@stjohnsnohomish.org Website: The Rev. Mary MacKenzie, Priest-in-Charge Schedule Sundays: Holy Eucharist 8 AM Rite One & 10 AM Rite Two with Music Adult Education: 9:15 AM Sunday School: 10 AM Classrooms and Nursery Open: 9:45 AM Thursdays: Holy Eucharist & Bible Study 10 AM Dare Mighty Things A reflection by Mother Mary I saw this sign in a Cover Photo for a blog post. It struck me as a focus for transition. It inspires me to be bold in my walk with Christ. I hope it inspires you as well. Conference facilitators often ask questions like, If you were not limited by time, money, or any other resources, what would you do or be. Sometimes they ll ask, What would you love to try if you knew you couldn t fail? At this time in the life of St. John s, these are great questions to ask ourselves. Let your imagination go. Allow yourself to dream big. What would you do; what would we do, if we couldn t fail? Well, most of us have lived enough to know that failure is always a possibility unless we do nothing which is its own kind of failure. Dream anyway. Now, what if it didn t matter if we failed? We have lived enough to have experienced our share of success as well as failure. And I hope we have learned that success is fleeting and so is failure. We learn from our experience (whether it s success or failure), and then we move on to the next thing and life goes on. So we have just moved from fantasy (failure is impossibility) to the real world (failure is possible, but not all that important). Maybe we could actually put those dreams into motion. Bring them to fruition. Now I want to take it one step further. What do success and failure even mean in following Christ? Too often we use the world s measures for the church: How many worshipers on Sunday? How many pledges? How big is our budget? Are those numbers increasing? You know, by the world s measures, Jesus ministry was a failure. He wasn t rich or powerful. He was practically homeless. He was practically unknown, really, in his world. Yes, there were a number of devoted groupies, mostly people on the margins, but he s hardly mentioned by extra-biblical writers. He was loved by many, hated by even more and he died an early, humiliating death. And yet, his influence has spread across the globe and lasted for millennia. So I don t think Jesus would measure us the way the world does. Jesus talked a lot about fruit. What fruit does St. John s produce? Are we touching lives? Transforming them? Are we entering the presence of God and bringing others with us? Maybe I should ask if we are finding the presence of God in others; in unexpected people and places? Are we supporting one another in living a Christian life out in the world? Are we listening for what God would have us do; whom God would have us serve? Now, what fruit could we produce? The thing is, we ll never know what the fruit will be until we plant the tree! And sometimes it takes a long time of feeding and watering that tree and learning what it actually needs rather than just giving it what we have given all our other plants, before it finally produces delicious fruit or a beautiful flower. And so, I invite you to dream big. Dare mighty things. Be bold in following Christ.

Walking the Camino de Santiago Here s a little background on what walking the Camino de Santiago has meant to Christians in Europe. It was one of the most important pilgrimage routes during the Middle Ages. Legend has it that the remains of St. James were taken to Spain from Jerusalem and buried at what became the site for the cathedral. In English the pilgrimage route is known as the Way of St. James. Traditionally the pilgrim started from home and walked one of the many paths to the cathedral. Pilgrims were seeking forgiveness for their sins, healing, or signs of God s favor. The earliest pilgrims walked in the 11 th century, but by the 12 th century it was becoming quite organized. Pope Callixtus II popularized the idea of pilgrimages and more and more Backpacks for Emerson School In August, during Biblical Arts time, St. John s Youth helped the Outreach Ministry fill 32 backpacks for students at Emerson School. The backpacks were filled with all of the school supplies recommended for students in the various grades. The backpacks will be given to students who need help to be prepared to have a successful school year. The filled backpacks were placed in front of the altar where they and the children who will receive them were blessed. December 3-4 ECW Craft & Bake Sale Christians began to follow the Way. The early way stations were maintained by orders of monks or nuns. Pilgrims carried with them a scallop shell, the symbol for St. James, that entitled them to a place to sleep and a free meal. Pilgrims walked for months or even years. But by the 16 th century the number of pilgrims declined as new nationalism, the plague, and the Protestant reformation created unrest. However pilgrims continued to follow the Way throughout the following centuries. By the mid 20 th century the numbers had dwindled to only a few. Interest in walking the Way grew during the late 20 th century in response to renewed focus on its cultural and historical significance. It was the first route to be named as historically significant in Europe and was named a UNESCO world heritage site. Today hundreds of thousands walk the Way each year. Some are hikers or tourists but many are modern pilgrims seeking a closer relationship with God. A big thank you to Lauren Cornelison for pulling this project together and for everyone who donated money and supplies and to our youth who helped fill the packs. Office Administer Rena Jugovich is our new office administer. She is in the office 10 AM 2 PM Monday through Thursday. There is a new door bell so ring the bell and Rena will answer. Stop by and introduce yourself. 4

While I m Away. ~ Mother Mary MacKenzie From September 7 th through October 16 th, I will be in Spain on a pilgrimage, walking the ancient way of St. James, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. There is a map of my itinerary posted in the Parish Hall with post -it flags noting where I will be each day. I am carrying your prayers for St. John s and for yourselves with me. When I can, I will take pictures on my phone and them to Nancy to post on the parish website, stjohnsnohomish.org. There will be organized labyrinth walks on Thursdays. I ask you to pray for me as I will pray for you. You will have the opportunity to experience a variety of presiders and preachers on Sunday mornings. On September 11 and October 16 th, the Rev. Dorian McGlannan will be with you. She has returned to the Diocese of Olympia now that she has retired and is a priest associate at St. Hilda, St. Patrick in Edmonds. The Rev. Carola von Wrangel will be with you on September 18 th. She has served Episcopal and Anglican churches in the US and Europe, is fluent in German at least, and possibly other languages. While she is retired, she has a special ministry with the non-profit organization, Food for the Poor, which serves the people in the islands of the Caribbean, providing not only food, but the means to produce their own food. St. John's Pilgrimage Walk the Labyrinth Labyrinth walks are planned to take part in supporting Rev. Mary in her pilgrimage to Santiago. We will meet on Thursdays, September 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 at noon at the outdoor Chartres Labyrinth at Wiggums Park, th Street in North Everett. Dress accordingly for NW weather changes. Contact facilitator, Laurie Crawford at or Laurie@docrawford.com for details. Then on September 25 th, the Rev. Tom Ortung will preach and preside. He is a hospice chaplain for Swedish hospital and lives in Sammamish. The Rev. Canon Rebecca Kirkpatrick will celebrate St. Francis Day with you and bless your animals on October 2 nd. She will also offer an adult forum on ministry with people under 35, the area of ministry for which she serves as a canon in the diocese. She has served the church in a variety of interesting ministries. The Rev. Kathleen Patton, from St. Stephen s, Longview will join you in worship and for an adult forum on environmental stewardship on October 9 th. That is also the day of Crop Walk. Pastor Tom Rodhe will be here on Thursday mornings for Holy Eucharist and Bible Study. The Rev. Jim Eichner (aka Farmer Jim) of Holy Cross in Redmond will be available for pastoral emergencies, and our team of Eucharistic visitors will be sure that those who are unable to come to church receive communion. As you can see, you will be in very good hands while I m away and of course, you are always in God s care. Emergency Pastoral Care If you have a pastoral emergency and need to speak with a priest, call the church office first ( ). If the office is closed, call the pastoral emergency phone ( ). Leave a message and Mother Mary or another priest will return your call as soon as they can. No funds are available through that number. There are some magnets and cards available in the Narthex for those folks who would like a reminder at home. 5

You may be wondering, What s happening in the search for a new rector? Although our community life has settled into summertime and its relaxed rhythm, work on the Profile continues. Parishioners have been wonderful about sharing their thoughts on these introductory questions: What experience has given you joy at St. John s? What experience has been most disappointing at St. John s? Discussions during the adult forums and at ministry and group meetings have delved deeper into our experiences at St. John s. How is your ministry / group supported by St. John s? Are there resources or strategies that would strengthen your group or ministry? How does your participation here connect with your own journey of faith? How can the clergy and lay leadership of St. John s best support your ministry or group? Does St. John s support you in your journey of faith? How? How might it do more? Individuals have also responded to the question: What is your dream for St. John s in the future perhaps in 5 years? What qualities would help a rector lead us towards that future? The answers to these questions have been especially helpful in suggesting a direction for St. John s in the future. Yes, the Profile Committee has received lots of ideas, concerns, and dreams. Thank you! If you haven t voiced your thoughts yet, please do so by talking to a Profile Committee member, writing up your thoughts and placing them in the suggestion box in the narthex, or ing them Transition Update to stjohnprofile@gmail.com. Input from the congregation is being organized into the various sections that a Profile contains. Among the sections are worship, history, demographics, finance, communities, ministries, qualities desired in new rector, diocese, and compensation package. In September the members of the Profile Committee will draft their sections and then combine them into the first draft of the Profile. The Committee hopes to have the first draft ready by mid-october so it can then be refined. The Profile will be presented to the Vestry for their review and then to the congregation, hopefully, in November. The final version of the Profile goes to Bishop Rickel for approval and then is posted on our website. It is then the advertisement that announces to the wider church that St. John s is seeking a new rector. Meanwhile the Vestry is prayerfully considering the appointment of a Search Committee. The Search Committee is charged with taking the Profile and its description of the desired qualities of a new rector and of the future imagined for St. John s and finding the candidate that best fits those descriptions. Here is where all of us need to remember that the Spirit is working for us to connect the right person to us as a new rector. Much work has been done. Much remains to be done. Pray for us! Diocesan Convention ~ October 21 & 22 at SeaTac Convention Center The annual Diocesan Convention is coming up in a few weeks. Your delegates are hard at work studying materials and attending regional meetings. If you have thoughts and ideas you would like to share, your delegates are: Earl Beede John First Jordan Wallace Sally Wesley Candace McKenna is the alternate 6

Thank you to those who are providing Coffee Hours September 4 John First & Candace McKenna Jenn Pontius September 11 Jud and Pat Chapin Bill and Judy Mote September 18 Tom and Debbie Schelfhout Ann Sage September 25 John & Laurie Gray Pat Swann The Celebratory Box What happens to the money that we put in the wooden box when we go up for our birthday or anniversary blessing? These celebratory offerings for birthdays and anniversaries are added to the St. John's Endowment Fund. The pennies, dimes and dollars that are dropped into the wooden box are invested, along with all the other monies given to the Endowment Fund, and the income from those investments is used for grants to further the mission of St. John s, which includes outreach. Each time one of us makes a celebratory offering it becomes a part of the principal of the Endowment Fund which is never spent but continues to earn money for St. John's work in the world. So, our 'celebration' goes on and on! How much should I put into the box? Any amount makes a difference - every penny keeps on giving.
