3 BUDDHIST WOMEN S ASSOCIATION r Happy Valentine s Day Everyone!! It is hard to believe February is already here! Thank you Group 3 headed by Lynne & Glenn Y. for the February cleaning of the church. Without the help of our church members, our Temple would not look as good as it does!! Thank you all for taking time to come out on your appointed cleanup day. Rev. Yushi Mukojima from Mt View Temple spoke at our Hoonko/Monthly Memorial Service. He spoke about shinjin and gave examples of what the concept means. A delicious chicken curry lunch was prepared by Sho & Kari Higuchi and family. Zenzai was served for dessert. The annual food Bazaar will not be held this year. In place of working those long, hard hours in preparation for the Bazaar, the Church is asking for a donation to cover some of the expenses our Temple incurs each year. This would keep our Temple running as it has with the many activities provided. It would allow for the continued maintenance and upgrade our building needs. An example; our restrooms are in need of new toilets. The old ones are not running well. New paint would make each restroom look so much nicer. Monthly services entail cost for flowers, heating & cooling, utilities, etc. Some of the extra items that we obtained, are donated: internet connect, printer for providing mailing labels to funeral families, enhanced listening devices for our elderly members, new microphone for podium and all the wish list donations! Donations have provided a new counter top and updates in the minister s room, new tables for social hall & cart, window blinds, rolling TV & cart. BWA Dues $10 is due and payable. Please remit to Carol Guerra 8484 S. Indianola, Selma or give to any Board member. BWA Yard Sale March 3 8am to 11 am Start saving your unwanted items. 4 MESSAGE FROM REV. KAKEI NAKAGAWA, RINBAN Why do we conduct a pet memorial service? Śākya-muni Buddha died on February 15th, 2700 years ago, surrounded by many sorrowful disciples, friends and animals. Trees and grass too, expressed their sorrow by turning their color from green to silver. In the Buddhist tradition, any event deserves our attention, as teaching material. This wellknown scene of Nirvāna, when we sincerely observe the picture, propagates Buddha s message. We are reminded that even in ancient society, Buddha required people to treat animals kindly. The Buddhist society had an animal hospital in their early times of B.C.E. Since then; Buddhists try to do no harm (or as little harm as possible) to animals. Buddhists try to show loving-kindness to all beings, including animals. The doctrine of karma teaches that any wrong behaviour will have to be paid for in a future life - so cruel acts to animals should be avoided. Buddhists treat the lives of human and non-human animals with equal respect. Buddhists see human and non-human animals as closely related: Both have Buddha-nature and both have the possibility of becoming perfectly enlightened. Some Buddhists believe that a soul may be reborn either as a human body or the body of a non-human animal. Buddhists avoid as possible as they can to hurt or kill animals, because all beings are afraid of injury and death. And the following words of Buddha are well known among all Buddhist countries. All living things fear being beaten with clubs. All living things fear being put to death. Putting oneself in the place of the other. Let no one neither kill nor cause another to kill. Dhammapada 129 4

5 MESSAGE FROM REV. KAKEI NAKAGAWA, RINBAN If we receive a message of life s equality from the Buddha, we should think on the origin of Mahāyāna Buddhism. One of three significant moments of Buddha s life, upon his first action of sharing the Dharma said, All sentient beings are suffering at present. (So I cannot ignore this condition.) From the beginning, Buddha treated the lives of human and non-human with equal respect. All sentient beings means not only human but also all other vital forms of life, as well. Looking at our daily life, we see human and non-human animals as closely related. If both have Buddha-nature, both have the potentiality of becoming perfectly awakened someday. That s why we are encouraged to live harmoniously with all forms of life. I think many of you are enjoying your life with your pets, such as dog, cat, bird, fish or other unique animals. I am sure that they are a part of your family, and you have no doubt that there is a KOKORO in them. Most of us have personal memories of our pets who had given us wonderful love and happiness. We are reminded about the importance of life through their existence. It is natural for Buddhists to honor of our beloved pets who were our family members, best friends and sometime a good Dharma-teacher. This is the reason why, without hesitation, Buddhists conduct a memorial service for their pets. 5
