1 BUDDHIST CHURCH OF PARLIER P.O. Box Newmark Avenue Parlier, Californiaf93648 Phone: (559) MAY PEACE AND TRANQILITY PREVAIL THOROUGH OUT THE WORLD February 2011 NEHAN-E (Nirvana Day) Rev. Sensho Inouye February 15, the day on which Shakamuni Buddha passed away, is called Nirvana Day and is commemorated by services at the temples. At our Parlier Buddhist Church, Nirvana Day is observed on February 12th combined with February Shotsuki Service and Keirokai. The followers of Jodo Shinshu revere Shakamuni Buddha because He is the manifestation of Amida Buddha on this earth. In the forty-fifth year after His Buddha-hood, He became ill at Vesali and predicted that after three months He would enter Nirvana. Still, He journeyed on until He reached Pava, where He became critically ill by partaking food offered by Chunda, a blacksmith, and on the full-moon day of February, knowing that His end was near, He came at evening to Kusinagara, a place about one hundred miles from Benares. In the Sala grove of the Mallas, between two Sala trees, He had His bedding spread with His head towards the north according to ancient custom. He lay upon it and with His mind perfectly clear gave His final instructions to His disciples and bade them farewell: It may be, that in some of you the thought may arise, the word of the Master is ended, we have no teacher more. But it is not thus that you should regard it. The truths and he rules of the Order which I have set forth and laid down for you all, let them, after I am gone, be the teacher to you; decay in inherent in all component things! Work out your deliverance and diligence. Thus passed into Nirvana in His eightieth year, the greatest of the world s teachers and kindest of men. Under the direction of Ananda, the Buddha s favorite diciple, the body was cremated and his ashes were divided among eight kings, and a stupa was erected over each portion. The portion given to king Ajatasatru was taken, less that two centuries later by the Emperor Asoka and distributed throughout the empire. The Headquarter of the Buddhist Churches of America, at San Franciso, California, has at present, a portion of Relics of the Buddha. Let us try to make every effort to attend Nirvana Day Service on February 12, at 10am to listen to the Amida Buddha s Vow with Shakamuni Buddha manifested for us on this earth. 1

3 THOUGHTS FROM THE SANGHA My Thoughts on The Three Treasures By Yuki Mori Each month, during the monthly service, we recite the Three Treasures at our temple. Not knowing exactly what it meant I found the following in the Meditation Sutra. Shakyamuni Buddha taught that anyone who wishes to be born into the Pure Land must endeavor to do the following three good deeds. 1. Do oya-ko-ko, be respectful, be polite and avoid unnecessary killing 2. Believe in and follow the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha and have right livelihood 3. Believe in the karma, and through the sutras realize the Buddha s heart and share/teach others Within the three treasures, #2 is what we recite. It contains two purposes. One, be aware that through the Three Treasures Buddha Dharma reaches us. Other is, to make a promise to become immersed in the Buddha s wisdom. To make a promise to anyone is to relay my intentions and give others expectations as promised. Here are a couple of examples: a woman who was proposed in marriage anxiously waits for the wedding day, or being promised a hefty inheritance you look forward to the day you receive it. Depending on the outcome the person who was promised to may become happy, sad, angry, disappointed, etc. I made many broken promises, not only to my parents, also, to family and friends, whom I know, made them sad, angry, and disappointed. When we hear that Buddha promises to save us we expect to be saved. When we hear that Nembutsu is the only way to be born into the Pure Land we may forget about the nembutsu, but we still expect to go there. If I promise that I will become Amida s child Amida must be expecting it. When I promise to be born into Pure Land, Amida must be joyfully expecting that too. Depending on the outcome of the promise it must make Amida happy or sad too. Amida has promised and is expecting everyone one of us to hurry and come to his Pure Land. How sorrowful it must be to see when opposite happens. The feeling must be as parents who just lost their child. It is easier for me to humanize and think of Buddha as my oya (parents) to help me understand better. As I recite the Three Treasures with everyone I realize that I am surrounded by the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha (teachers). Feelings of joy and sincere appreciation swells up from within. At the same time somewhere in my mind, I know that I will never become a devout and sincere Buddhist as The Three Treasures I recite and promised. It s as if someone is telling me that I am the one who is always disappointing the Amida. I can t help but feel remorseful (sumimasen). Although the sutra teaches me ways to be born into the Pure Land I am unable to do so. I also make promises when I recite the Three Treasures, but I can t live up to those promises either, therefore, I must be making the Amida very disappointed and sad. It s natural and logical that anyone would give up on me. As Shinran Shonin said because of people who can t do good things, who are powerless, tsumaranai (worthless) beings, Amida exists, therefore, only say the Nembutsu. I strongly agree with Shinran that Amida Buddha is here only because of me. I wouldn t have come to realize what kind of person I am, thoughts I have, and because of it I have been encouraged to say the Nembutsu. Without reciting the Three Treasures I would not have become aware of these thoughts and feelings. It is also absolutely important to be aware that there is a huge difference in meaning of doing good between Buddhism and ethical values. I feel very grateful for the Three Treasures and that is my okagesama. Namuamidabutsu, Namuamidabutsu, Namuamidabutsu We ask Amida Buddha to lead us to the Pure Land, but do you know what Amida Buddha is pleading us to do in this life? 3

5 buddhist women s association By Irene Kozuki, BWA Newsletter Writer Happy New Year! We start out the year with the temple clean (thanks to Group 3) and improved by the many projects to spruce up the place last year. It s as if the temple anticipates some very exciting events this year, and with the schedule of events just for the first few months, I have to say this is certainly the case! Our installation of officers was held on January 15. The board includes Gail Hachiya, Kaye Kozuki, Kathy Yano, Carol Guerra, Lynda Okino, Charlene Miyakawa, Karen Shimizu, Hiroko Kimoto, Matsuko Suehiro, and Irene Kozuki. Thank you to all for accepting the responsibilities. Our first major service of the year, Ho-Onko, a memorial for Shinran combined with the monthly memorial service was followed by a salmon luncheon prepared by the team of Cheryl and Curtis Koga with the artful help of their sous chef Kaye K. and the reliable hands of Lynne Yoshimoto. and Joyce Sasai. This was a wonderful treat for all who attended. A very special project for this year is the hosting of the CCBWL Conference on March 4, We encourage all of our members to come and help support the efforts of those who have already invested much time in the preparations. The theme is Diversity in Oneness, Oneness in Diversity. Rev. Abiko of the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Temple is our keynote speaker. He will interest us with his wide experience and his easy-to-listen-to style. Dr. Katsuyo Howard from Fresno State s Southeast Asian Student Program and the International Student Services and Programs will be our afternoon guest speaker and give us an up-to-date report of the tsunami/earthquake areas of Japan. She has returned to Japan several times to assist in the recovery and restoration. In addition to the interesting speakers, there will be good food, entertainment, and an opportunity to visit with friends from the CC chapters. This all comes with planning by the busy ladies who will make continental breakfast food, welcome and sew the favors that will be given to each participant, research, develop the program, and carry out the plans. We hope we can count on your help for this worthy event. Cheryl K. and Lynne Y. provided the refreshments for the CCBWL meeting on January 19 and discussed plans for our conference. We hope to have many participants from the district. As for the activities that are coming in February, on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, Parlier will host the Vision and Preservation Combined Service with Rev. Alan Sakamoto of the Orange County Buddhist Church as speaker. BWA members are being asked to prepare food for refreshments so please help with food as well as attending. There will be Dharma students, the Fresno Choir, speaker, food and friends sounds like a winner for Super Bowl Sunday for sure. Additionally, we will have the annual Keirokai to honor our senior church members, the organists, and special advisors. This will follow the Nirvana Day service and monthly memorial service on February 12. After lunch, there will be a chance to be a winner in our Bingo games. Your district toban will be calling you for the head count, or you can call Kaye Kozuki at or her at kaye@kozuki.com. While on the topic of , may I ask people who have to please Kaye and pass on your address. It would help save time, money, and resources if we could more of our BWA announcements and information. Church clean up for February will be on Saturday, Feb. 11 for Group 1. At this point the people in Group 1 are the same as last year. By next month the new schedule and groups with a few changes will be printed in the directory. The Dharma Class led by Curtis Koga is held at 7 PM on the second Wednesday of each month. Please join this gathering that thrives on the real-life experiences of members who are trying to live with gratitude in the Nembutsu tradition. In February, the class will be on the 8th. Also be aware that the Food Bazaar will be held March 25th. We will have the work assignments and schedule next month and if you can contribute your own preserves or craft projects to sell in our dessert booth, please plan ahead. Contact our Social Chairs, Karen Shimizu, Charlene Miyakawa, or Lynda Okino regarding any conflicts with your assignment or if you can volunteer friends or family members who could help us. And looking a little more ahead (did you eat your renkon, lotus root, at New Year s I was told it symbolizes looking ahead into the year) we will have our rummage sale this spring and are trying to find a good day that doesn t conflict with what is already scheduled. Save your saleable items we ll be calling for them in soon. The co-presidents mentioned at the installation dinner that it was their hope to share in many enjoyable activities through the year. Even if it s cleaning duty, when you gather a group of cooperative women, we always seem to have fun. We have many opportunities to start the year off in a positive way hope to see you at some of the events coming up! 5
