3 MESSAGE FROM REV. KAKEI NAKAGAWA, R INBAN In recent years, interest of Buddhism by the general American public has steadily increased. In the last few years, many questions and inquiries have become prominent. The situation in Central California is of no exception. There is one important thing I noticed. Despite the fact that the Central California Buddhist Sangha has a history of more than 100 years, we are not seen or understood by those of a different cultural background. It is surprising that some have misunderstood us to be as cult religion. So I have a proposal. Why not show our face, show the way of life as a Buddhist. the goal of our life, etc., with a dear mission statement? Below, is my draft of a Mission Statement. Please let me hear the valuable opinions of our dear followers of the Nenbutsu. [Mission Statement) VALUES Wisdom, Compassion (Empathy & Embrace) Freedom (Total Equality), Harmony (Non-Violence), Respect (Gassho), MISSION *Central California Buddhist Sangha is a harmonious dharma community whose mission is to develop humanity [= kokoro (Jpn.), citta (Skt.) = Heart/Mind) to help realize a world of non-violence, whether physical, mental, social or cultural. We work together to foster the true Sangha, where any individual would never be impaired to realize their full potential. GOAL To transform lives from 'ego' -centered to 'sense-of-care' -oriented To make aware of the reason why "} am here now" Replaceable with the name of each chapter 3

They each gave their interpretation of what Namu Amida Butsu meant to them. The discussion continued on in the social hall with Nancy and Tom as leaders. As usual, it was good to hear opinions and comments from the Sangha. Ashley did the children's activity. The kids made ojuzu hangers so they will always know where their ojuzus are. Calhauns also did lunch (with some help from Courtney). It was deliciousll All in all, a good time with good food and friends. 4
5 5. ~~ 4r~~ BUDDHIST WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION 4l;""~" 't~~ij ~. Nil"YClIIG Service and Keiro Kai Luncheon was well attended even with cold, wet weather. Rinban had a presentation about the Historical Buddha, and explained about the meaning of Nirvana Day. He also explained Keiro Kai, respecting and honoring the elderly, was started by King Asoko some 2600 years ago, after awakening to the truth of Dharma and came to realize how we are all interconnected and dependent on each other to finally awaken. This tradition has been carried on since. In Japan, respect for ancestors and the elderly is anchored in the culture, influenced by Buddhism and Shinto religions as well as Confucianism. But it wasn't until the twentieth century, in 1963, that it was decided to create a holiday dedicated to the elderly, keiro no hi, "respect the aged day". Kciro Kai Luncheon and Bingo were organized by Joyce S. and Lynne Y. It was wonderful and enjoyed by all as always. Special thank you to Matsuko S. for her Dana of the many rolls of makisushi. She rolls all of them without help. Certainly, without saying, there were many who worked behind the scene (too many to mention here) to bring it all together. Table decoration- Joyce S. & Lynne Y. Bento pick up-ashley C. and Courtney C. Game of Bingo is always enjoyed by all in attendance. We look forward to winning something whether it's a sponge, or note pads, or toys. It's also a perfect time to see how our heart and mind work: frustration and disoppointment when we don't win something within the game, jubilation of winning by shouting out "BINGO and heading out to the prize table to select something of our choice. It's all in fun, but deeply underlining it is the work of Dharma. e With Gratitude Our temple is as strong as the members that support it. Matsuko Suehiro for the many rolls of makisushi for Keiro kai luncheon. Beautiful an delicious as always. Cleaning Crew Group 2 Toban lead by the Goto/Mihara's for February Church cleaning. The group came out on Friday to do their job as Saturday was a very busy day. That's commitment!!! Parlier Buddhist Church Board work many hours to keep our temple running smoothly. There are many difficult decisions to be made and many details to be taken care of, and each of them do this voluntarily and willingly. Let's extend our feelings of appreciation to them when opportunity arises. Parlier Buddhist Church provided the delicious Bento Box for all who are or will turn 70 by the end of This is in appreciation and honor of the members who have supported the PBC in various ways and will continue for many more years.
