Mindfulness The practice of Mindfulness has moved beyond the Buddhist environment and is being practiced in the general American culture. Non-Buddhist courses and even magazines are published, dedicated to the practice of Mindfulness. What is Mindfulness? It is the practice where one tries to focus on the moment, what is happening in front of them at this very instant. It is the practice of calming our mind so we are not thinking of the past or the future, rather this very moment. For example, when we ring the Kansho [bell] before service starts, it is to remind us to stop talking and calm our minds before service starts. When I have been asked how Mindfulness relates to the Jodo Shinshu teachings, I emphasize that Mindful practice is a universal tenet and practiced in all schools of Buddhism. Many Buddhist schools emphasize Mindful practice and teach specific techniques. Mindfulness is so deeply rooted in Buddhist culture that it is often not spoken about specifically, but rather it is integrated into one s daily life. I remember my first exposure to Mindful practice. I was at a BCA retreat and the group was instructed on walking meditation. This is the Mindful practice that has you completely concentrate on the sensation of walking. How does the pavement feel under your feet? What sounds do you hear? What do you smell? The practice stops our reasoning mind, allowing us to be present and sense all that is around you. It also helps you re-establish your connection to the world. Mindful practice can be done in any environment of our daily lives. It can be done while at work, washing the dishes, even when shopping. A common response of participants, after they have completed a Mindfulness meditation, is that the participants feel calmer, more rested, and focused. Indeed, these are important benefits and lead to better mental health. But is this the same type of Mindfulness that Buddhists practice? The two can be identical in format, but the perceived outcomes are different. The Buddhist practice is to go beyond ourselves. Instead of taking this new awareness and focusing on how it makes us feel, the Buddha would want us to see how the world functions and appreciate the concept of interdependence. That, in seeing the world without our conscious or unconscious distortion, opens up to the idea that we are not separate from the world. Buddhist Mindfulness practice should make us Mindful not only of the moment, but Mindful of our oneness with the world around us. In Gassho, Rev. Kurt

At the conference, there will be activities for the whole family. More information will be provided in September. ******************************* Busy Bees at Newcastle Cemetery There were 8 of us who started the annual clean-up and placement of flowers at Newcastle Cemetery on August 3 rd. While Rev. Kurt swept the headstones, Daniel went around with his handy augur to clean out the PVC pipes. Other worker bees like Susie Strom, Isabel Meyer, and Grace Yoshikawa bundled the various flowers into a bouquet which Michi Mitani, Helene Nakamura, and her husband Ken went around placing flowers at each gravesite. Surprisingly, the work was done in a little over an hour! That takes teamwork! Many thanks to Daniel Cota, Tomoko Matsuda, Grace Yoshikawa, Susie Strom, Yvonne Yoshikawa, and Doris Mar for getting the carnations, greenery, heather, and other flowers for the unmarked gravesites. The bouquets added much-needed color!

3 PBC Obon 2018 A special thank you to Hiroshi Matsuda for providing the photos.

4 Hatsubon/Obon/August Monthly Memorial Service After cemetery services at Auburn, Newcastle, and Rocklin, members gathered at PBC to honor the Hatsubon families with a candlelight ceremony and to remember those who had passed away in August. There were 12 Hatsubon families. The Hondo was filled with other members honoring their loved ones. Rev. Kurt gave a meaningful Dharma message about what Obon means in the Jodo Shinshu tradition. He discussed the differences between the various schools of Buddhism. Rev. Kurt emphasized that Obon service is not for the deceased, but for those of us living so that we can once again hear the Buddhist message. Rev. Kurt also stated that he looked forward to leading the dancers in the back parking lot that night and to performing some of the dances in a Celebration of Joy! Help Wanted Food Bazaar Schedule We appreciate any and all volunteers for this major PBC event. Sept. 9 Manju-making at Del Oro High School Sept. 10 Set-up of Bazaar tents Sept Bazaar set-up Sept. 20 Chicken clean-up Sept. 21 8:00 AM - Food preparation; ladies are asked to bring either a salad or dessert to share at lunch Sept :00 AM Food preparation 11:00 AM - PBC Annual Food Bazaar Reno Obon By Fusae Miyamoto On Sunday, July 22 nd, Helene Nakamura, Miwako Yamashiro, Susie Strom, Isabel Meyer, Ginny Ayala, Grace Yoshikawa, Rev. Kurt Rye, Daniel Cota, Stuart Mori, Nancy and Ed Nakamoto, Tomoko Matsuda, Mich and Ted Nishimoto and Fusae Miyamoto attended the Reno Howakai s Obon Service. As the service started, Rev. Rye asked us why we all bow when entering the hondo, or dojo. The answer is because we are entering a sacred place where the Buddha, or his name, is present. The place can be any place where the Dharma is listened to or discussed. In early Japan, most villages did not have temples where everyone could meet to hear the teachings of the Buddha so they gathered any place large enough for the villagers to gather, and the dojo was such a place. The incense burning is there to purify us and the kansho (bell ringing) is to prepare ourselves to listen to the Dharma. Often we chant the Sanbujo to welcome all the Buddhas to come to the meeting place from all directions while they are met with flowers or leaves or petals of welcome. We never turn our back to the Buddha. Even the ministers in the Onaijin do not. Instead they face each other so their side is toward the Buddha. After the service we went below to purchase our lunches and dessert at the Howakai s mini-bazaar. The program started at 3 o clock. Reno Taiko entertained us with several taiko numbers. When the obon dancing began, one taiko performer kept time with the music, which added to the joy of dancing. After the dancing, we returned to Placer. This was an ORDEAL! A truck had overturned and spilled some liquid on the freeway. We drove at a snail pace until we reached Highway 20 and detoured through Nevada City. We arrived home 3 hours later than we should have, but thanks to Ed s patient driving we were tired but happy. ****************************** It s not too late to donate -- If you have new, unused items in their original packaging that you d like to donate as Bingo prizes at the Bazaar, please leave them in the PBC office marked Bingo Prizes. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, tape a note on the item(s) with your name, address, item name, and approximate value and a receipt will be sent to you after the Food Bazaar. Please contact Jackie Itogawa (ojii.babi@gmail.com, ) or Nancy Nakamoto (nancy@nakamoto.us, (916) if you have any questions. Thank you for your generosity!

6 Placer Buddhist Women s Association News 2018 Toban Schedule Loomis Rocklin/Roseville, et al Auburn/Newcastle Lincoln/Penryn January, May, October February, June/July, November March, August, December April, September PBWA Launches New Cookbook By Martha Kubo and Susan Rumberg Co-Chairs, PBWA Cookbook Committee Omotenashi describes the unique Japanese culture of hospitality. It is the Japanese way of wholeheartedly attending to one s guests with the effort coming from the heart. It represents the hospitality mindset that one should anticipate guests needs, respect, and care for others without expecting something in return. It is with this sentiment that PBWA proudly introduces its newest cookbook, Omotenashi: Recipes From the Heart. This cookbook builds on the success of PBWA s two previous cookbooks, Nihon Shoku: Our Family s Favorite, published in 1986, and Nihon Shoku II: Japanese Dishes, published in With almost 250 pages and 320 recipes from more than 55 contributors, Omotenashi includes both Asian and non-asian foods because today s cooks and our Sangha are diverse. However, by including updated versions of classic, popular Japanese dishes, we also are preserving our important culinary and cultural heritage. Among the special features in this new edition: Updated, expanded descriptions of the symbolism of New Year s foods; Comprehensive glossary; User-friendly 3-ring padded binder that can be laid flat with removable pages; Easy-to-find index with recipes listed alphabetically by Category and Subcategory; Special 12-page supplement with practical nutritional information. Special thanks to Contributors who shared their favorite recipes Keith Uyeda. We tapped into PBC s extended family when we asked for Keith s assistance. The son of Ted and Connie, Keith, who lives in the Bay Area, generously designs the annual Food Bazaar poster. This year, he also donated his time, talents, and expertise to the Cookbook Committee by creating the beautiful cover and unique dividers. The Cookbook Committee: Daniel Cota, Susan Ishimaru, Tomoko Matsuda, Fusae Miyamoto, Hatsuko Nakata, Mich Nishimoto, and Yvonne Yoshikawa. This dedicated group contributed their special skills to make this cookbook a reality. The committee epitomized the Buddhist principle of Dana (selfless giving). 9 Member Spotlight By Joyce Parks Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Stuart Mori is a Yonsei (fourth generation Japanese- American) currently living in Rocklin. His closeknit family consists of his parents, Ben and Francis, both age 86; three sisters: Tracy, Kelly, and Candice; along with three nieces, one nephew, and two great-nephews. Most of Stuart s family members have remained in Honolulu. At the PBC, Stuart says he feels blessed to have been unofficially adopted by the Kawamoto family. After graduating from high school, Stuart left Hawaii to attend Eastern Washington University in Washington state, where he earned a Bachelor s degree in community health. Later on, he enrolled in graduate school at Purdue University in Indiana, and earned a Master s degree in health. Drawn to relatives living on the west coast, Stuart moved to California in 1988, and was hired by Caltrans in Sacramento as a Transportation Planner. In 2016 Stuart accepted a promotion at the High Speed Rail Authority in Sacramento, where he is applying his transportation knowledge in planning the Governor s high speed rail project. Although my educational background is in health, it has prepared me to apply my skills across disciplines, says Stuart. As for his personal life, Stuart remains closely connected to his Japanese roots and his Jodo Shinshu upbringing. His late grandmother was a member of Moililili Hongwanji Mission in Honolulu and his late aunts were members of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin on the Big Island. For the past five years, Stuart has been attending the Sakura Japanese Language School at the Sacramento Betsuin, rising to the intermediate/advanced level. At the PBC, Stuart serves as a Dharma School greeter, taiko groupie, mochi maker, kitchen helper, and floater at our Annual Food Bazaar where he helps prepare and sell drinks/shave ice, shish kabobs, manju, etc. This year, Stuart was excited to learn that his nephew Reyn, will be attending the Bazaar, and that both of his parents, along with sisters Tracy and Kelly will be visiting him in November. When his family comes out, Stuart says he is looking forward to introducing them to Rev. Kurt and inviting them to participate in PBC activities. taiko class, I was greeted warmly and made to feel welcome. That sense of family continues today as I ve become more involved with the church, especially during Bazaar time when everyone pulls together - not only for that one weekend, but for many, days and weeks prior, acknowledges Stuart. In October of next year, Stuart is planning on leading a group tour to Honolulu for all interested PBC members and members of other nearby Betsuins. The five-to-seven day tour is currently being organized in coordination with AAA and Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays Travel Agency. He is currently negotiating with them for airfare and hotel packages, along with an omiyage run. Tentatively, the itinerary will include a tour of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, and the Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin the sister Jodo Shinshu organization to the Buddhist Churches of America. By November of this year, Stuart says he expects to have all the details worked out and is hoping to get a lot of people excited about signing up. I think it will be a lot of fun! The PBC has given me so much over the years, this is just my way of giving back, says Stuart. When asked what he appreciates most about the PBC, Stuart cites the sense of family within our Sangha. From the moment I attended my first
