The spontaneous working is itself the fulfilled land; Our realization of supreme nirvana is beyond doubt. Hymns of the Pure land Masters #82 Master Shan-tao We wonder what the future might hold for us. So we turn to the Buddhist teachings for guidance and security. Indeed, this is what the teachings are for, but we must reflect how we approach the Buddha and the teachings. Do we rush through the readings or patiently analyze what it has to say? And, in rushing, not let ourselves absorb the deeper meaning of the teachings. One of the Buddhist concepts that has had the largest impact on me is the concept of Buddha Nature, the concept that everyone has within them the potential for enlightenment. My early understanding was that Buddha nature is like a gem covered with mud of human attachments, and Buddhist practice was the method to polish away the defilement of this samara world from this beautiful gem. In doing so, persons could realize their true potential and then be able to reach enlightenment. For me personally, it seemed an impossible step to make this discovery of my own Buddha nature. I was fortunate. I discovered the Jodo Shin Shu Teachings and writings of Shinran. Shinran teaches another perspective. In the wasan above, Shinran states, We attain Buddhahood through the nembutsu by the vows spontaneous working. The spontaneous working is itself the fulfilled land; our realization of Supreme nirvana is beyond doubt. The word spontaneous is a translation of the Japanese word Jinen that can also be translated as naturalness. Shinran is saying that the essence of realizing nirvana is spontaneous or natural from the viewpoint of Amida or the Dharma. In effect, we can focus so much on the process of attempting to understand enlightenment, Nirvana or Buddha Nature that we don t realize we are already in the process. The process is already happening, and we should focus on what is occurring instead of the process itself. In life we can see things clearly if we look at what is happening in the moment instead of how we perceive it. I had many such experiences in my years working as a mental health professional with people who suffered from debilitating mental illness. One of the people I enjoyed most was Frank, someone who had been in and out of the hospital for the last 40 years. He had an outgoing personality, helping other patients when they couldn t express their needs. Frank had a temper. T hat was the main reason he stayed in the hospital, but he worked hard to control it and, after calming down, would apologize for what he said or had done.
Dharma Message (continued) As my experience increased, so did my responsibilities and I began to co-lead group sessions. To be honest, I was excited to use some of the concepts and terminology I had been learning in class. In one session, Frank was talking and I asked him a question using my best clinical voice and terminology. He yelled an obscenity that I won t repeat and walked out of the group. After the group was over, I found him sitting on a chair with his arms crossed and obviously still angry. I asked if I could speak to him and he replied, Why should I talk to Mr. Therapist since it seems he thinks he knows everything already. After a long silence, I said, I just want to help. Frank responded, Help? Talking that mumbo-jumbo and not being real aint going to help anyone! Frustrated and confused, I said, What about our other talks? Then Frank looked at me and said calmly, You were a person like me, nothing else, and listening to my old jokes is the best therapy for me. You tried your school stuff but speak to me real, that is what it s really about. I feel this is the essence of what the wasan says. The spontaneous (natural) working is itself the fulfilled land (Pure Land or Nirvana). We do not need to organize the Dharma into categories. We need to take a break and step back and see the Dharma at work. Shinran is making the point that all of these processes are progressing, without our input. It is like the wind blowing or the rain falling, we can analyze it in scientific constructs. But we must also experience the wind against our faces and the music of the raindrops against the windowpanes. We must see ourselves as part of the process, part of the moment and in doing so focus on our own transformation. 6 Placer Buddhist Women s Association News By Daniel Cota The July 2 nd meeting covered many topics. It was noted that the Mountain View Obon Bus Trip has been cancelled. The return time proved to be too late, discouraging members from participating. The PBWA Cookbook Committee reported that the material has been submitted to the publisher. The cookbooks will be on sale at the Food Bazaar. Rev. Kurt noted that the Wheel of Dharma had an article on the Buddhist Study Center of New York s project to translate and publish all of Lady Kujo s poems in English. The PBWA passed a motion to donate $100 for this purpose Toban Schedule Loomis Rocklin/Roseville, et al Auburn/Newcastle Lincoln/Penryn January, May, October February, June/July, November March, August, December April, September ************************************* PBWA Cushions for Sale By Claudia Nakata Do you remember when our social hall used those cold, hard, noisy metal chairs? They were heavy, they scratched the floor, and we needed seat cushions to pad our tushies! Today we have comfortable, lightweight composite chairs that are good on the floor and don t need any cushioning. which means we have a large number of covered seat cushions taking up valuable storage space under the stage in the social hall. If you could use a few of these cushions for home, the PBWA will be selling them, first-come-firstserved, for [$1.00 each] after our post-obon clean-up on August 5 th. They may come in handy! ************************************* Reminder: If you have new, unused items in their original packaging that you d like to donate as Bingo prizes at the Bazaar, please leave them in the PBC office marked Bingo Prizes. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, tape a note on the item(s) with your name, address, item name, and approximate value and a receipt will be sent to you after the Food Bazaar. Please contact Jackie Itogawa (ojii.babi@gmail.com, ) or Nancy Nakamoto (nancy@nakamoto.us, ) if you have any questions. Thank you for your generosity!
Food Drive Sundays We want to remind all members that the PBWA has launched Food Drive Sundays. Core Dharma teachings include compassion and dana (selfless giving). To put these teachings into practice and to fufill its mission of supporting community and charitable organizations, PBWA will launch Food Drive Sundays. The first food drive will actually be at the Obon service on Saturday, August 4 th, but will continue on the first Sunday of every month starting in September. PBWA members have researched organizations in order to implement and expand its community outreach activities. PBWA s first beneficiary will be the Placer County Food Bank that provides food and services to Placer County s hungry. As Food Drive Sunday gets established, other groups will be identified to serve as beneficiaries. This effort also reinforces the Dharma School s ongoing emphasis on kindness. Please help PBWA help those in need. We will have a donation box in the lobby of the church on Saturday, August 4th. Thank you for your generosity. The items recommended by the Food Bank are: Peanut Butter (plastic containers only please) Dried pastas like spaghetti, egg noodles or macaroni & cheese Pasta sauce (canned or plastic containers only please) Cereals Canned tuna, chicken or salmon Canned fruits Canned Vegetables Soups, chilies and stews Canned black beans, kidney beans, or garbanzo beans Brown, white or wild rice Dried lentils, beans or peas Dried fruit Granola bars Shelf-stable milk 100% fruit juice (canned, plastic or boxed please) And other nutritious, healthy-choice foods (preferably with reduced fat, sodium and sugar) Cash or check donations will also be greatly appreciated. The Food Bank can pool its monetary donations and purchase foodstuffs at great discounts. Please join us at PBC s Buddhist Study Classes. The August class is scheduled for Thursday, August 23 rd, 6:30 PM. This month s topic is Does Buddhism Have Rules?
Member Spotlight By Joyce Parks For many years before she began dating her partner, the late George Oseto, Carol Waverly regularly attended PBC s Annual Food Bazaar. She looked forward to the event every September, not only for the chicken teriyaki that PBC is known for, but for the festive community spirit. It wasn t until Carol began attending services and participating in church activities with George however, that she found the PBC to also be a place for spiritual growth. I found Buddhist principles to be closely aligned with the values with which I have always tried to live my life in harmony, selflessness, gratitude so although George is no longer here, I have continued to enjoy attending services and being a part of our Sangha, says Carol. Born in Southern California, Carol spent her youth in the lush Willamette Valley region of Oregon, where she worked during summer months picking berries and beans and, later on, in local canneries. I enjoyed the independence of holding down a job, and of developing a strong work ethic early in life, says Carol proudly. The oldest of three children raised by her parents, Sam and Joan Robb, Carol has two brothers - Brian, who currently lives in Hood River, Oregon; and George, who lived in Salem, Oregon before passing away from cancer ten years ago. After marrying her college sweetheart, and earning a teaching credential from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Carol taught elementary school in Albany, Oregon for four years. Over the next 15 years, Carol and her husband at the time, moved multiple times - to California, Montana, North Carolina, and New Mexico. In the interim, the couple raised three children: daughters Kristen and Robyn, and son Matthew. Following in their mother s footsteps, both Kristen and Robyn are now elementary school teachers, as is Carol s daughter-in-law, Ellen. Single, Carol returned to California in 1986, and furthered her education in order to qualify for her second career as a Litigation Paralegal. Upon completion, she quickly landed a job working for one of the top law firms in Sacramento where she made many new friends and enjoyed the challenges and rewards of helping attorneys serve their clients. I especially appreciated the high degree of professionalism among the people I worked with and, to this day, I still consider them as my second family, says Carol. Officially, Carol is now retired but, on occasion, continues to provide litigation services to friends when requested. In her free time, Carol enjoys the companionship of her Aunt Monica who moved in with her and George two years ago. The two share a passion for cooking and gardening and they, along with their cats Miso and Boo, have been ideal housemates. George and I enjoyed 27 years together, and I often reflect on all the many wonderful experiences we shared but life goes on, laments Carol. Now, more than ever, Carol makes a special point of staying actively involved in the lives of her three adult children, seven grandchildren, and members of George s family. When asked what she considers to be her proudest moment, Carol cites the moment she realized how happy, healthy, and well-adjusted her seven grandchildren are today. Connor, Zachary, Kendall, Ellery, Eden, Mackenzie, and Sarah, are all remarkable individuals, and I see them growing into happy, healthy, well-adjusted adults. It s a crazy world they are living in, but they are being raised by wonderful parents and, just knowing that I may have had a role in shaping who they are, is humbling, says Carol.

Nishimura, Machiye Goldberg, Catherine & Yamada, Chester Yoshikawa, Shizuo Yoshikawa, Russell By Rev. Kurt Gato s Corner It is the 4 th of July, and the house is buzzing with excitement. Daniel and I are preparing a traditional holiday dinner in the kitchen. As usual, the cats are walking around our feet, getting in the way and making a lot of noise. Gato: Hey, watch out, you almost stepped on my tail! Rev. Kurt: Well, you are in my way. I don t think the kitchen is large enough for the four of us. Saffie: Ha ha, look at me Gato. I'm out of the way sitting here in the corner like a proper kitty. Gato: Saffie, you are not fooling anyone. You are only in the corner next to papa Cota hoping he might drop some of the steak he is cutting up. Saffie: Humph, well at least I m out of the way. Rev. Kurt: OK guys, you two stay here. Daniel and I are going outside to start grilling the corn. Gato: Oh, I want to go outside too. It is such a nice day; I want to enjoy the sunshine and the festive atmosphere. Saffie: That sounds marvelous! We can sit on the porch and watch the hummingbirds eat at their feeder. Perhaps we could start with some potato salad as an appetizer. Rev. Kurt: You are not fooling me. You both know you are not allowed to go outside. Please stay here. Gato & Saffie: No fair! Rev. Kurt: You two know it is dangerous outside for you two. We live in the country and we have many wild animals that are dangerous and might hurt you. Gato: Aw, I can fight off those dumb turkeys at any time. Rev. Kurt: I m not talking about the turkeys, silly. I m referring to the hawks, coyotes, and snakes that we have seen in our yard. Saffie: I don t care; I ll take my chances, thank you very much. I'm a big girl and can handle myself well. Gato: Yea, Saffie. I would like to see any coyote try to mess with the two of us. We are fearless. Rev. Kurt: What if something did happen to you? I would feel terrible and sad. Remember you need to thinks of others as well as yourselves. That is what the Buddha meant when he taught Right Thought in the Eightfold path. What he meant by Right Thought is not only to think of ourselves, we need to think of others and how our actions affect them. If the two of you went outside and ended up getting hurt, it is not just you, but how bad Daddy Cota and I would feel. Gato: I guess I can see how that would make you feel bad and all. Saffie: Yea, you right, pops. We will stay inside to be safe and not have you worry. Gato: I agree. Now all we have to do is fire the fireworks off to be safe in the house! Rev. Kurt: What?

PBC Strategic Planning Session 1A Processing By Claudia Nakata PBC s first Strategic Planning session held on June 9 th provided a wealth of positive reflections about how we feel about being members of PBC. Please read the article in last month s bulletin for a summary of that session. Based on the first three question posters, Roko Miles, our strategic facilitator, helped us create a Value Tree document that reflects PBC s current vision, and sets the basis for decision-making. Here s a draft of the first iteration (please provide your feedback or questions): An interim session was held last month with Roko, Claudia Nakata, and Howard Itow to review the sticky notes from the 4 th and 5 th question posters. GROWTH was the underlying objective, with several substrategy areas defined: Membership, Programs/Services, Technology/Communications and Facility. The next step will be to brainstorm action items for each of the strategies. Strategic Planning Session #2 is scheduled for Sunday, August 26 th, immediately following the Dharma Summer Service. Lunch will be provided. Please mark your calendars and bring your ideas! If you have any questions or additional feedback, or would like to be part of the core team, please contact: Carole Kawamoto (cj.kawamoto@yahoo.com), Allan Yamashiro (ayy@comcast.net), Howard Itow (howarditow@gmail.com) or Claudia Nakata (claudia.nakata@comcast.net). Look to future bulletin articles for updates and opportunities to become involved on our progress!
