2 Page 2 From Sensei Living with Our Own Ego The month of June is almost here, and in our gardens the flowers are blooming, and many trees are blossoming. The past few weeks, as the temperature has been rising, everything has become quickly transformed. Our house is now surrounded by greenery and the leaves of the trees have created a blanket of green on each side of our garden. It reminds me of the Amida Sutra s description of the Pure Land in which there are rows of arrayed trees. In the early morning I usually walk through the neighborhood and feel refreshed by the beauty of nature around me. I see many birds perched on the trees, chirping and singing, and sometimes a woodpecker hammering on the chimney of houses can be heard. People have started working in their gardens, pruning trees, cleaning up the debris from winter, and enjoying the warm weather. As we work the soil in our gardens, and begin planting our flowers and vegetables, it feels good to touch the earth. It brings us closer to nature and gives us a sense of being connected. In a farming environment, like the Okanagan, we see the cycle of life the momentum of growth. Over the experiences of many years, we come to know the rules of nature. Often after many trials and errors, we begin to acquire the wisdom of nature. We gradually build up our understanding, so that over the years, we acquire a practical wisdom. I have often thought about the lessons that we learn in life. Yet despite those lessons, life for many of us continues to be an ongoing struggle. Is there some recipe for living a good life? We are all looking for answers in our own way. The other day when I was re-organizing some of my files, I came across an article that I had read some time ago. It was called The rules for being human. I may have introduced these to some of you before, but I think that they remind us of some of the important things in life that we have often overlooked or taken for granted. These sayings remind us of the important things in our lives here on earth. You Will Receive A Body: You may like it or not, but it will be yours for your time in this world. The choice is yours. You Will Learn Lessons: You are enrolled in a fulltime informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and hence choose to ignore them. A Lesson is Repeated Until Learned: Lessons will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned them. When you have learned one important lesson, you can then go on to next. Learning Lessons Do Not End: There is no part of life that does not contain lessons to be learned. There Are No Mistakes, Only Lessons: Growth is a process of trial and error. Our failed experiences are also a part of the process to success. There Is No Better than Here: When your there has become here you will simply obtain another there that will, again, look better to you than your present here. Also, the future is not better than the reality of the now. Other people are often reflections of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself. Unfortunately, You Will Forget All This at Birth. We are all born with these capabilities - our early experiences lead us into a physical world away from our spiritual selves, so that we become doubtful, cynical, lacking belief and confidence. There is some practical value in these rules. We also need to recognize that all our difficulties originate from our own self-centredness or secular desires, such as always wanting, needing, achieving and so on. The Buddha says that our pain or suffering arises through desire or craving, and that to be free of pain we need to cut the bonds of desire. For human beings, it is virtually impossible to avoid behaving in a negative manner, even if we believe that we are leading relatively blameless lives. We cannot discard this ego of wanting, needing, and achieving as the buddhas and bodhisattvas are able to do. Yet we need to live with the recognition that we live an ego-centred life. We can then assume full responsibility for this ego-centred life and at the same time be able to humbly accept who we are. In this way, we may live our lives to the fullest, becoming aware of the potentials and limitations in our world. In Gassho, Rev. Yasuhiro Miyakawa

3 Page 3 Kelowna Buddhist Women's Association Shirley Tanemura and I attended the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada Women s Federation (JSBTCWF) AGM in Calgary on April 27th & 28, 2018 in conjunction with the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada (JSBTC) AGM. The JSBTCWF is the national organization that the Kelowna Women s Association is a member of. This was my first time at this conference and I must say it was enlightening. I went with some trepidation as there were some issues to be addressed and resolved at this meeting and I left with confidence that the ship is heading in the right direction. Some highlights from the meeting: The JSBTC Women s Federation has invested their funds wisely and is in a good financial situation. Canada was represented by Lori North and Susan Huntley to the World Buddhist Women s meetings held in San Francisco. The 16th World Buddhist Women s conference will be held in San Francisco in August 30 to September 1, 2019 Funds raised by our Dana Day Projects will go to the national Red Cross and to the Indspire organization which helps indigenous students pursue post-secondary education. $3,000 will be donated to each one. The JSBTCWF supports the establishment of an Eishin-ni Kakushin-ni Endowed Chair at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. This chair would emphasize Shinran Shonin s Teaching to students studying Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Other fund raising projects such as the used stamp and foreign coin programs have been managed by Hiroko Yoshihara and the funds raised have been given towards good causes such as the Save the Children fund. Please see the poster on the Stamp program. Four delegates from Toronto were nominated and elected to become the new executive committee for one year. In Gassho Maureen Hatanaka British Columbia Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Federation is now accepting applications for the 2018 Post - Secondary Scholarship.
