From Sensei: The Bodhisattva Mind It is now November, and the end of the year is fast approaching. The past year has brought its fair share of heartaches. Over the past few days we have witnessed the disaster in the Philippines, caused by the typhoon Haiyan, which current figures estimate, killed 10,000 people and displaced more than 600,000. Reports indicate that most of the deaths from the storm appear to have been caused by surging sea water strewn with debris, resembling the effects of a tsunami. The scenes from the disaster are devastating and disturbing, and remind us of the destructive Sumatra tsunami of The Haiyan typhoon is now believed to be the strongest storm ever to make landfall over the course of human history. Winds were incredibly strong, at approximately 315 mph, with gusts up to 378 mph. There are vast wastelands of mud and debris with the bodies of victims strewn everywhere. Rescue efforts have begun from many countries throughout the world, in a race against time to save survivors, and to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the disaster. Once again, we have been brought to recognize the power of the forces of nature, with more than 2/3 of the Philippine islands affected. Mr. Leb Sano, the Philippine lead negotiator to the UN climate talks in Warsaw, Poland addressed the opening session of the UN climate summit. In an emotional speech, about the effects of global warming, he talked about the concerns of the scientific community, that more destructive storms will become the new norm as a result of global warming. He explained that as the earth warms up, so do the oceans. The energy held in the warmer waters then tends to increase the intensity of storms, making them more destructive. Mr. Sano appealed to the world community, to join together in fighting against climate change. He listed many examples of the present realities of global warming: the overall rising sea levels, the Arctic communities struggling with the dwindling polar ice caps, the deltas of the Ganges, Mekong, Amazon, and Nile where lives and livelihoods have been lost, the droughts in Africa, and the deadly super typhoons that have struck southeast Asian countries. His speech had a huge impact on the world leaders in attendance, and he was given a standing ovation that lasted for a long period of time. The sources of pain and suffering are so pervasive in our world that often we may feel completely overwhelmed or confused about how we should cope, and how much we can do. How can we help those affected by such tragedy? Page 2 The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara known as the Great Compassionate One dedicated himself to relieving the suffering of all sentient beings, and reached out to all those in pain and suffering. A Bodhisattva is a Buddha-to-be who practices the teachings of Buddhism in other-worldly and secular ways of life. Instead of becoming a Buddha immediately, he or she vows to save all beings, and works with compassion for those who are suffering. The most revered Bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprpta were attendants of Amida Buddha, and prior to his enlightenment when Amida Buddha was known as Bodhisavatta Dharmakara. Bodhisattvas have a deep inner striving of spirit to help others, and are motivated by a generosity of spirit that radiates to all, without any need for acknowledgement or personal credit. Bodhisavatta Dharmakara in his vows said: I resolve that when I become a Buddha I will fulfill my vow in every possible way And to all beings who live in fear I will give great peace (Larger Sutra) Our spiritual self is anchored to the world of oneness, where we can feel a state of peace and connectedness right now, within the present or the now. The Nembutsu brings us the realization of the eternal now every moment of our lives and gives us the strength to face many challenges. How do we, as concerned members of the world community deal with the human tragedy in the Philippines? How can we help? Already many countries and organizations have become mobilized and have begun to organize various efforts in fundraising, and reaching out to offer help to the victims of the disaster to try to reduce their suffering, and help them begin to re-build their lives. Now is a time for us to nurture the Bodhisattva mind. Let us reach out in our own individual ways, to feel their pain and suffering, and do what we can to help the victims of the disaster with the many great hardships that they are currently facing. As the year end approaches, I wish each of you peace and fulfillment. To those in difficult situations, be kind to yourselves, and entrust yourselves to Amida Buddha s compassion. In the light of Amida Buddha, may you find comfort, acceptance, and peace. Namo Amida Butsu. In Gassho, Rev.Y. Miyakawa

World Peace and Nembutsu December is upon us and many in the world turn even more to thoughts of world peace. The following comprises the last three paragraphs of a paper by Daiei Kaneko that I thought you all would enjoy. This article first appeared in The Eastern Buddhist, Vol.1, No.1 (New Series), September Th e late Daiei Kaneko was a former Professor Emeritus at Otani University in Kyoto. "All of the above has a vital bearing on the problem of morality. What, then, is the basic attitude of the Nembutsu adherent to the problem of morality? First of all, they all pay due respect to the importance of morality. It is a pity, however, that we can never do good in the complete sense of the term, considering the fact that our impulse to justify ourselves and to blame others is, finally, characteristic of us all. This fact shows how deeply we have been submerged in the current of birth-and-death, as deplored by Shan-tao. Therefore, we need, by every Message from the Editor Remember when all you needed was your signature or verbal OK to make a commitment? I do, and I was selling cars in the old days, way back when just the hand shake sealed the deal. Those days seem to have long gone; now a day you need a signed copy (in triplicate), plus promise your 4 th born to make anyone believe what you are telling them to be true. When did we become so insecure, we are assumed to be lying before you are telling the truth (guilty before innocent). I believe once you tell a lie, it needs to be perpetuated and continues on and just grows and grows, until it gets blown out of proportion. I am still of the old school, best to get the truth out and beg for forgiveness versus telling a lie to avoid the situation, because in the end, it will Page 3 means, to listen and awaken to, and to thus be purified, by the Primal Vow. Not out of the consciousness of moral obligation or duty, but immediately out of the humility which arises from being awakened to Amida's Sincerity, the Nembutsu adherent seeks to attain a warm reconciliation and communion with others. It has often been the case with Nembutsu adherents of deep faith that the humility, tenderness and gratitude to Amida which shine out of their personality, quite naturally influence others around them and thus bring about genuine peace in their local community. Is not such virtue surely what morality envisages as its ideal? Bearing this in mind, Shinran says, 'There is no good that surpasses the Nembutsu'. World peace is our urgent, serious problem. It goes without saying that it can never be brought about by any temporizing measures. Political toleration or appeasement will not avail much. The foundation of Continued on page 7 catch up to you and cause even greater troubles. I would worry about who I told the truth to and who I told a lie to and if that person talked with the other person and if that person talked with the other person, who would I have to tell the truth or lie to if I didn t want the person I told the truth to hear the lie. Lol sounding like Rob Ford. Well, I would sooner have and keep a reputation of someone who has strong ethics and be able to sleep at night versus questionable ethics and toss and turn in my sleep. What goes around usually comes around and when all is said and done, your name is all that remains. Honor your name, help and support others and be a good role model, is my creed hopefully you agree. In Gassho jiro Buddhism of the Heart Honesty means admitting when you re wrong or too weak to be stronger, and just letting that less than perfect fact of human existence sit there while you do your best. It also means not pretending to be something you aren t, which in a recovery situation includes not passing yourself off as doing better if you aren t really. It means telling the truth as much as you are able, and admitting to yourself at least when you haven t been entirely honest with others.

Page 5 Greetings BC Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Federation Fall 2013 Newsletter Congratulations to the Vancouver Buddhist Temple VBT for putting on a fabulous 59th annual convention for 130 attendees from Vancouver, Steveston, Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Spokane and Seattle. Everyone enjoyed the public lectures by Dr Jeff Wilson, author of the Shin Buddhist title "Buddhism of the Heart" and retired Minister Rev. Matsubayashi. Kudo's go to Karen Stewart, Wendy Akune and Roy Akune Sensei for the successful workshops on meditation, nutrition and dharma. VBT's joint skygarden project with non-profit group Projects in Place sold over 100 pots of local urban unpasteurized honey. On behalf of outgoing directors of the BCJSBTF, thank you for your ongoing support. It has been an honour to serve the Federation for the past two years. Congratulations to the incoming directors and officers, Kuni Ikuta(SBT), President, Larry Ryan(SBT) Vice-President, Lucy Yoshioka(FVBT), Secretary, and Phyliss Ohashi(Vernon Buddhist Temple), Treasurer. Thank you to Kuni, Mari and Kaz for serving on the nomination committee. Over the years, the BCJSBTF's role has diminished to focus on a few fellowship activities, the scholarship and publications. As a further downsizing to eliminate unnecessary administrative efforts and costs, the members of the federation passed a motion to look at ways to continue these activities without the burden of operating a separate organization. In addition to administrative volunteering efforts are real costs of accounting, legal and liability insurance. The members formed a committee to prepare proposals on how to accomplish this. The committee is lead by Mari Cameron(Vernon Buddhist Temple), Phyliss Ohashi(Vernon), Dora McKay (Kamloops), Lucy Yoshioka,(FVBT), Larry Ryan (SBT) and Greg Chor(Vancouver). If you have ideas, please contact one of the members of the committee as soon as possible. Publication Update: Kamloops Buddhist Temple member Dora McKay completed the project from last AGM to make sure all Canadian temples had adequate supplies of the publication Jodo Shinshu: A Guide. This pamphlet sized primer is usually given to first time visitors to any temple. Dora ordered them from the Buddhist Churches of America bookstore and worked with the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada to arrange for shipping. The Seiten Service Book development is well on its way. Bishop Aoki started this project for the Federation two years ago and revealed its attractive new look and potential for electronic delivery. The content is approximately 50% complete. Annual Raffle: Steveston Buddhist Temple will propose taking over the raffle logistics to their board for approval as soon as possible before the Spring Directors Meeting. Scholarship: Congratulations to Taylor Nomura, winner of the Four Year Renewable Post Secondary Scholarship ($500 per year) and Katie Ryujin, winner of the One-Time $1000 Scholarship. Taylor will be pursuing studies at UBC. We missed Katie at the convention as she had already moved to attend Queens University. Manning Park Family Retreat: Vancouver Buddhist Temple will again be organizing the retreat for May 17-19th, 2014 on the Victoria Day weekend. Mark your calendar and look for information at your local temple or at vancouverbuddhisttemple.com or contact retreat.vbt@gmail.com or Gina Remembrance Day: The BCJSBTF will be represented by VBT member Izumi Low who has volunteered to lay a wreath at the cenotaph in Stanley Park. 2014/2015 Convention: Vernon Buddhist Temple Members presented hand made Mizuhiki invitations for the next BCJSBTF Convention to be held September 20-21, It has been decided that Officers travel costs to the convention will be covered. Steveston Buddhist Temple will be hosting the 2015 Convention. Living in the dharma, Greg Chor, President BCJSBTF

Page 6 An Overview of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada The primary purpose of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada (JSBTC) is to provide Canadians general access to Jodo Shinshu Buddhist teachings. As your national organization, the JSBTC accomplishes this primarily through sustained services to your temple and ministers. What Services does the JSBTC provide to my temple? Minister Benefits: The JSBTC provides health and retirement benefit programs for your ministers by pooling the resources of all temples. This gives the ministers better health and retirement savings plans by optimizing the return on investment. The workload of the temples is reduced through centralized negotiation and administration. The Office of the Bishop (Socho): The JSBTC employs the Bishop (Socho) to provide spiritual leadership, coordination amongst our ministers and handle communications with the Nishi Hongwanji (mother temple) in Kyoto, Japan. Fund Administration: The JSBTC administers the funds of the LivingDharmaCentre.ca, the Ministers Retirement Fund, the Bishop's Special Fund, the Sustaining Fund and the Women s Federation Funds. The JSBTC manages these funds in compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency and Industry Canada regulations for Non-Profit Charities by means of our corporate by-laws. Temples can take part in nationally funded projects such as the Youth Tour to Hongwanji. Who Works for the JSBTC? The JSBTC has 2 part time employees including Bishop Tatsuya Aoki Socho (shared bishop position) and Bookkeeper Joanne Yuasa Sensei and 7 volunteer Directors. Does my temple membership fee go to the JSBTC? In 2012, $65 of your temple membership fee passed directly to the JSBTC. $43 of this went to fund your minister s health and retirement savings plans and to register ministers with Hongwanji. Another $23 went to paying the costs of the Bishop and to the cost of the Annual General Meeting where Directors were elected and major decisions made. We are fortunate for the forward thinking of our predecessors who instituted the shared Bishop program in 2009 to reduce the cost of the Bishop's office by a net $83,000 per year ($49 per member). Why does the JSBTC ask for donations on Jodo Shinshu Day? The JSBTC spends an additional $20 per member on administrative cost including Accounting and Headquarters Administration. For this, we rely on your generous JSBTC Day donations and by renting out the residence above the HQ office. We are fortunate to receive investment income from the Sustaining Fund through Dundee however annual revenues are difficult to predict. Kelowna Buddhist Temple Treasurer, as of the date of this publication will continue accepting your kind donations in the month of December, please consider making a special contribution. 7 World Peace continued Just Rambling JUST RAMBLING A couple of weeks ago when visiting Kelowna, I decided to drop by the Temple to see how the chow-mein making was progressing. After an absence of three years, I felt the way Rip van Winkle must have felt when he returned home following a nap that lasted for twenty years. There was no one at the work tables or in the kitchen who was anywhere close to being my age. At 91 years, I was by far the oldest person present there. If my observations were correct, there was only one other person just slightly past the age of 80. However, it was encouraging to notice so many young and middle aged people working so hard side by side. My previous experience helping to make chow mein was a few years ago and I quickly realized, in watching the most efficient workers that I would be a hindrance, not an asset. Therefore, I spent the good portion of the day drinking coffee, munching on the goodies, chatting with the helpers and making a nuisance of myself. The other week's article about Alzheimer's in the Vancouver Sun by Dr. David Suzuki hit me quite Page 7 peace must be firmly laid in the depth of human nature. In this situation, the doctrine of Pure Land Buddhism may well be rediscovered as a valuable source for bringing peace. This is not to say that the awakening to the Primal Vow of Amida Tathagata is a panacea for all the problems of mankind. However, it should never be overlooked that Pure Land Buddhism has long been, and continues to be in the present, the Dharma that is adequate to the existential situation of all ordinary beings and, further, that it has borne, to all genuine Nembutsu adherents, the aforementioned spiritual fruits, all of which have great importance for the problem of peace." Gassho, Barb M. (If anyone would like to read the entire article, I would be happy to send it to you bemaccarl@gmail.com) close to home. He mentioned that his mother had contracted the disease and passed away. It also fatally affected his three sisters. Three of my siblings were also victims of Alzheimer's. One passed on at 80 years of age and the other two are 77 and 84 years old. My sister who is eleven years younger than me and was a nurse had a triple by-pass surgery over 25 years ago. She has been taking low dose coated Aspirin tablets for many years. I have also been on the same medication since my heart attack 22 years ago. We both have wondered if those pills help to give better blood circulation to the brain to keep our minds healthy. Dr. Suzuki states that in his opinion, exercise definitely helps to maintain both physical and mental health. Rainy season has finally come to the Langley area accompanied with high humidity. The result is that my hip joint becomes quite painful occasionally. Perhaps I should move back to Kelowna where the air is so dry and the sun shines every day and I use those words rather loosely. Why do we say Namu Amida Butsu at? As the kids at Dharma School lead the service, I am often deeply touched by hearing their voices saying Namu Amida Butsu, what we call the Nembutsu. Why do we say the Nembutsu? What does it mean? Here are two reasons why we recite the Nembutsu. First, Namu Amida Butsu is an expression of trust. It means, I take refuge in Amida Buddha or I entrust myself to Amida Buddha. This means that we trust in the limitless wisdom and compassion that is Amida Buddha, which is able to embrace all beings. The Nembutsu helps us remember that we are included, with all other beings, in that infinitely wise and compassionate embrace. This helps us to realize that we re in the same embrace with all other beings, all in the same boat, so to speak. There is no separation between our own well-being and that of others. By genuinely wishing for others to overcome greed, hatred, and ignorance and reach peace and happiness along with us, we contribute to our own well-being and inner harmony. Second, Namu Amida Butsu is an expression of gratitude and respect. We live saying the Nembutsu in gratitude for Amida Buddha s compassion and wisdom, and for all the causes and conditions that make it possible for us to live. That gratitude and respect can inspire us to follow the Buddha s teachings and to show compassion and wisdom to others. We are able to accept that nobody is perfect, and to be grateful that we are all in Amida s embrace anyway. This can help us to feel joy and peace in our daily lives. In, we learn to say the Nembutsu, and we can say it whenever we think of Amida Buddha. In Gassho, Genevra If you have thoughts and stories to share with the Kids Sangha and, you are invited to correspond with us at KidsSanghaKelowna@gmail.com

Page 9 Temple Executive Report Greetings everyone, like the last reporter as I sit here 1 finger typing, and I am wondering what I can write about. The first thing is a BIG thank you to all the very hard working people who came out to help with the Farmer s Market and our fall chow mein sales. The chow mein weekend was long and a hard day s work for many. Now that the big Temple fund raiser is over, things can mellow a bit but not the activities at the Temple. It is a very busy time with many things going on. We have TSS 9:30 AM Nov. 21,22,27,28 & 29th. Please come out and hopefully help with others to clear out our minds and make life more satisfying. I don t think life is ever clear! We have Dharma school every Sunday at 10:00 AM with Herb and Genevra leading the way. Under the guidance of Barb MacCarl, Michael Martin and Genevra Cavanaugh, they usually have 2 sessions a week called Dharma discussions, some session on Sundays at 11:30 AM. Please check the calendar of events for further times. Big thank you to you all for heading these sessions. We have another couple of fund raisers to do before the end of the year. We have udon sales and mochi making coming up Dec.14 th for mochi, Dec. 13 th for washing rice at 9AM. I am looking for able body mochi pounders so we need you young guys to roll up your sleeves. For delicious udon, we are making Wednesday and Thursday December 11 th & 12 th at 6 PM. These fund raisers are so important for the running of our Temple. As stated in last month s newsletter, our donations and fundraisers have not kept up to our expenses to run our Temple. We need your assistance in new fund raising ideas and your continued support (labour) as well as generous donations to keep our Temple going. We dodged a big bullet when the Temple roof needed major repair and the Fujinkai Ladies donated most of the money to do the repair. The next big project which needs to be done sooner than later is the parking lot repaving. It is unfortunate that monetary things seem to get in the way of our spiritual path but that is the reality of things. Thank you everyone. We need your continued support and generous assistance. Please keep healthy and take care. Hope winter will not be too cold and long. Any volunteers to drive the tractor for snow removal? Contact me and maybe make up a schedule. I need someone to cover for me from Feb 3, 2014 to March 21, Also, elections time is here so please vote and place your ballots in the boxes for the Temple Executive and the Fujinkai Board. In Gassho, Alan From the will be collecting items for the Food Bank. Please bring non-perishables/toys to the temple by Dec. 15. Please put your donations in the large box in the upstairs foyer. The 's 'The RBC Free The Children' Clean water project raised $ in coins. A special THANK YOU to Temple members, L&D Meats, Bannister Cadillac, Rick's Garden World & Keldon Electric & Data Ltd. for helping raise the funds.
