Page 2 From Sensei: The Extraordinary within the Ordinary It is hard to believe that summer has come to an end. All around us, we are seeing the changes of autumn - the rapid drop in temperature that occurs once the sun has dipped behind the mountain, the changes in the leaves, the last roses of summer, the shedding of the old, in preparation for the new that will eventually emerge next spring. Autumn is the season for moving onwards. Each year we see the miracles of nature- the eternal cycle in which so many changes seem to happen as if on cue. Some birds are already gathering in larger flocks, in preparation for their journey south. It is humbling, and awe inspiring to observe these changes associated with autumn. With the changing season, many of us also become more attuned to the changing seasons of our lives. We notice how quickly our children are growing and maturing. We also notice the increasing fragility of our parents, and our more elderly relatives. The future stretches ahead of us, causing us anticipation, but also, some concern. Some of us have loved ones who are coping with serious illnesses. We feel the preciousness of their existence, and anxieties for the future. We notice the transitions of life in our daily existence. We see families eagerly expecting the birth of a child, yet this is often accompanied by a growing realization that their parents are getting older, and already challenged by illnesses. All of these things happened to our parents, and our grand-parents, and to generations before that. Now these are happening to us. We may not have noticed these changes of seasons in our own lives until something happened in our family, or ourselves, or our friends. The Zen master, Dōgen ( ), was the founder of Soto Zen, one of the main schools in Buddhism. He was also a contemporary of Shinran Shonin ( ). After spending several years in a monastery practicing meditation under the guidance of a Zen master, Dōgen was asked what he had learned from his practice. With a serious expression he quietly answered I have learned that my eyebrows are horizontal and my nose is vertical. Some who heard this answer were quite taken aback, and they challenged him saying what is new about that! --- everyone knows that! Many left with feelings of disappointment. Why did Dōgen choose to respond this way? It seemed that he was simply commenting on the truth of his experience. What he intended to convey was the simple fact that after years of practice, he needed to return to reality, to see things clearly for what they are. He explained that he needed to intentionally separate himself from the processes of his perception by emptying his mind, in order to see the truth as it is. Dōgen believed that people with their minds full of fears, anxieties, desires, or other pre-conceived ideas, have difficulty understanding their perceptions. They are often unable to see the truth because they are not ready for it. They do not understand because they have become accustomed to the illusions that have become a part of themselves. Many of us go through the motions of life and are unable to see things clearly. We may have trouble living in the moment. We can become stuck, either by the past, or by the future, by our preconceptions, our fears, fantasies, or illusions. We cannot see things as they really are. Our judging, calculating minds often create a big obstacle to our seeing and knowing. Our thinking stands in the way, between ourselves and the reality around us. These perceptions, knowledge and so-called wisdom that we acquire through the processes of analysis and conditioning can also create for us the illusion that we are knowledgeable or have some intellectual superiority or understanding. The result is that we stay as ignorant as ever, because of our inability to open ourselves to the reality that surrounds us. Dōgen, through practice, learned how to see truth as it was, in a simple, straightforward way. Within the ordinary he found the extraordinary. We owe much to Dōgen, and his radical simplicity. Indeed, profound wisdom is often hidden in the simple truths of life. We can totally miss them, because we are so dominated by our own memories, feelings, beliefs, anxieties, and expectations. The goal of Buddhism is to transform those illusions into enlightenment. Enlightenment is to awaken to suchness or as-it-is-ness The Name of Amida Buddha came out of Reality-as-it-isness as Namo Amida Butsu. Our surrounding is real and true whatever we face. Don t let illusion stand in our way. Look for the truth, and live through life with Namo Amida Butsu. In Gassho Rev. Y. Miyakawa

Day Sunday October 27, 1pm Looking forward to your generous support Although we each belong to a temple near where we live, it is very important to recognize that each one of us is a member of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada. On this occasion of our Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada Day, may we rediscover our joy by listening to the Dharma and walking the path of the Nembutsu together! Namo Amida Butsu, Bishop, Tatsuya Aoki Message from the Editor Size matters after many years of chow mein making in the Spring and Fall of each year it was decided that we needed a more environmentally friendly container to hold our Chow Mein. After long discussions which are still taking up time at our Temple Executive meetings, we decided on the Pagoda style take-out box we have been using now for the last couple of years, but the reason we are still in discussion about the container as people still perceive that we are charging the same of less chow mein. Personally I do notice this in many purchases, from smaller chocolate bars and less in a bag of chips all more money for less. Unfortunately we must not be good at marketing, because people still think they are paying more for less, but we sell our chow mein by weight... which hasn t changed. Personally, I don t understand people s logic, this is a Buddhism of the Heart Temple fund raising project first and foremost we aren t competing with the restaurants offering a similar product. Our product is unique, produced in limited quantities and with the highest quality homemade ingredients. We increased our costs to reduce the impact on the environment and this has caused us to lose some customers thinking they are getting less wow, I am truly amazed how much perception dictates peoples purchasing habits. Maybe we should include filler, children s toy or surprise to take up the space and change the name to Show Mein Supper. Unbelievable what perception does to what we do is it right, I will leave that up to you to decide, but we have decided to go back to the cheap styrofoam. In Gassho, jiro Ps almost forgot to welcome everyone back to another season of my controversial editorials I just love to keep stirring the pot. Amida is foolish too. This is a statement perhaps without parallel in religion. It is a relatively easy thing to say that the world is foolish. Many people have also woken up to their own foolishness. But to realize that the source of one s salvation, be it God or Buddha or whatever, is also foolish that is a revolutionary thing.

Page 5 JSBTC Update: A monthly update from the national headquarters of the Shin Buddhist Temples of Canada Fentiman Place, Richmond, B.C., V7E 6M6 Ph: fax: Web: livingdharmacentre.ca A Message from JSBTC President Greg Chor Greetings to all Temple members and friends, With the return of the Fall, the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada (JSBTC) Day is before us. The JSBTC Day, held annually in October, marks the founding of this national organization that brings all Jodo Shinshu followers together as one national Buddhist community. This organization was founded in October, 1974 as the official organization by which the mother temple, the Nishi Hongwanji, in Kyoto, Japan supports the efforts of Jodo Shinshu followers in Canada. JSBTC Day also gives us the opportunity to commemorate and express our gratitude to those who preceded us in the propagation of Buddhism in Canada. The donations received at the Temples from this special JSBTC Day go towards the health and education of present and future ministers, and to support the work of Bishop. Indeed, without the support from contributors there would be a financial challenge for the Board to maintain and undertake programs. I am sure you will learn about other facets of the significance of JSBTC Day in your minister's Dharma message. We look forward to your attendance and support on this very special day. In Gassho and deep gratitude, Living in the Dharma with both hands together... Greg Chor President, JSBTC Farmer s Market & Bake Sale Saturday, October 19, am 3pm Come support this valuable fundraising project Locally grown apples and vegetables (Ogi s Greenhouse), plus home baking From the Temple Executive: The Temple Executive wishes to echo the sentiments of the FujinKai article contained within this newsletter regarding our deepest sympathies to the family of Sakae Nishi. I will always remember her smiling face and laughter. She would always talk to me in Japanese and I m sure she knew that I didn t understand a word but she would slap me on the arm and continue on Takeda-san. As with all the pillars of the Temple, she will be sadly missed. I can only hope that someone comes in the fill the voids created when we lose members like Mrs. Nishi. Hard working executive member, Isao Terai lost his brother-in-law, Tom Itani last month so we had some difficult times over the summer. Sincere condolences to the Itani family as well.
Temple Executive: continued Page 6 We have several members that have undergone surgeries and undergoing continued treatment for past ailments and to all, the executive expresses its concerns and wishes for speedy recoveries. For the lucky few, it was a great summer and we can look forward to some warm fall weather to get in the last few rounds of golf before the snow starts to fall. I am so excited to hear that we are starting something new this season Dharma Discussion. Thanks to the support of great people like Barb MacCarl, and Michael Martin, we have somewhere for people interested in Buddhism to meet and mingle. As Web Master, I receive so many s from people who are interested in Buddhism, but don t know how to start. This would be a great first step and one in which I would encourage all the readers to share with friends and family members. We need to start being more aggressive and less shy about talking about how great a religion Buddhism really is and how it can benefit those seeking spiritual wealth. I also cannot stress hard enough the need for your support in helping with the upcoming Temple projects to your support of the Temple in general. The executive has been trying to find new ways to fund raise, because we cannot just succeed with Chow Mein in the Spring and Fall alone. With most of our Orchardists now leasing out their properties, and other factors even our famous Fall Farmer s Market and Bake Sale may suffer extinction, so please get out and support this event while we can still enjoy it. So in summary, HELP H is for home, your Temple your Shanga, your home: E is for everyone, it isn t for the old, it isn t for your parents, it is for everyone; L is for learn, hear the Dharma and gain understanding; P is for please In Gassho jiro Fujinkai Update We are now full swing into a busy Fall season at the Otera. Many events are planned in the upcoming months. Please note carefully the dates for the upcoming Chow Mein preparation and sale days, as well as the Farmers Market in the newsletter. It appears the summer heat wave is over and we are hoping to experience a beautiful Indian Summer, although we re off to a bit of a wet start this past couple of weeks. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families who lost precious members this past summer. Mrs. Sakae Nishi, a long-time and dedicated member passed away in late July. For many years she helped the Dharma School children and parents dress for Obon, and worked tirelessly at our many functions to help wherever possible. We know that Jim takes pride in his mom s love of the Temple and her hard work and extend our best wishes to him. Namu Amida Butsu. We also wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Linda and Isao Terai, Beryl Itani and the extended Itani family as Tom Itani passed away in August after a lengthy illness and extended time in hospital. He leaves to mourn a large family and many friends in the community and at the Temple who will miss him. Namu Amida Butsu. Meeting for Fujinkai Executive: As this fall promises to be a busy one right up to the beginning of 2014, we have scheduled a meeting for Thursday, September 19 in the Temple Boardroom at 7:00pm. Shirley Tanemura will send out an reminder to the executive. Chow Mein Fundraiser: Our prep day for making chow mein noodles is Friday, September 27 at 6pm. Mein making will be Saturday, September 28 starting at 8am. We need as many volunteers as we can get even if you can only come out for a few hours. Chow mein vegetable cutting will start on Wednesday, October 30, and again on Friday
Fujinkai Update: continued November 1 (skipping Halloween). Cooking will be done on November 2 and Sales will take place on November 3 Farmer s Market & Bake Sale Will take place on October 19. Prep day will be Friday, October 18 with more details to follow. Page 7 We need your support for preparation day, sale day, home baking and, of course, we look forward to your bringing your friends who can enjoy the beautiful bounty of goods available. Thank you everyone for your continued support. It is very much appreciated. In Gassho, Barb Just Rambling It is now a month following my 91st birthday. Having relaxed for a couple of months in July and August, giving my mind a complete rest regarding thoughts of writing the newsletter, it was rather difficult cleaning out cobwebs that had started to take over some sections of my brain. However it's nice to be back at the keyboard. Driving back to Kelowna last week and while passing through Westbank, ancient memories entered my thoughts. 60 years ago, I traveled with my two brothers who were members of the Rutland Rovers hockey team to watch a game being played on an outdoor rink in Summerland. The game ended before 10:00 PM which allowed us ample time to catch the midnight ferry from the Westbank ferry wharf to Kelowna. We stopped at the only cafe in the village of Westbank for coffee and a snack only to find that the ferries were not in operation. It seems that several logs had broken away from the Simpson sawmill log boom at Bear Creek during a violent wind storm and blocked ferry traffic to the landing area. Following a lengthy wait at the cafe, that thankfully remained open long after their regular closing hour and after drinking several cups of coffee, we were able to depart for Kelowna at 6:00 AM. Luckily those of us who were fruit growers were not very busy in winter and could sleep in if we so desired. West Kelowna as it is known today will forever be Westbank to me. In bygone days, it was primarily an agricultural and a forestry oriented district. Indian reserves extended throughout the region. In my opinion, the population of those of Japanese descent living there was far greater than what it presently is. They were mainly involved in farming as were those of the same race living on the east side of the lake. According to my parents, they thought that the first people of Japanese origin who purchased farmland in Westbank was Mr.and Mrs.Taneda over 80 years ago. Some acres of the orchard are now owned by a son and his family. Taneda road adjoins the farm. A grandson owns a nearby farm and resides there. He is a high ranking Karate instructor and his Dojo has over the years turned out several championship competitors. If some people left Westbank 40 years ago and returned there now, they would not be able to fully believe that they are in the same locality. The amazing transformation and progress that has taken place is almost magical. It is somewhat scary to imagine the possible changes that could happen during the next decade. The city on the east side of the lake could very well become the little brother. In that event, another bridge will surely be required. After seeing the urbanization and the so called progress in the Surrey, Langley and the north side of the Fraser River, the sky is the limit. Do I like it? It is quite thought provoking. 8 This Season: Dharma Discussions: I hope that you all have had a wonderful summer; it seemed to fly by SO quickly! A couple of us have decided, with the kind permission of the Temple board, to start informal dharma discussions at the Temple. These will be on Sunday mornings and will begin next week, September 15 from 10:30 until 12:30. There is a possibility to have this on a continuing basis, and it would tie in nicely once dharma school does start - we will just continue discussion once the service is over. For this gathering, we will be doing some meditation, chanting and hopefully have a lot of great discussion. Please bring any books, articles or thoughts that you have so we can all learn together. If you have any friends that may be interested in being with a group of wonderful people and learning about the dharma, please feel free to bring them along. For those of you who have already taken the Intro classes, Miyakawa Sensei has consented to do a meditation workshop sometime in the fall. I will let you know when that will be scheduled. Page 8 Please note that Michael and I will both be away at a convention in Vancouver the weekend of Sept. 20, 21, 22 and there will NOT be a gathering that weekend.
