Page 2 From Sensei: Awareness The most dangerous people in the world are those who are unaware of their own darkness. (David Brazier) The New Year has begun, and we have many plans for the months ahead. An exciting event for many of us is the 750 th Memorial Service in Hongwanji, Japan. Many are planning to attend this, as well as the World Buddhist Women s Convention. This will be a pilgrimage to our Mother Temple, and we will treasure this opportunity. For many planning on attending, it will be their first experience to visit Hongwanji. This reminds me of the words of Rennyo in Kikigaki. Our daily duty should be to hold the morning service without fail. Our monthly duty should be visit the nearby temple where an image of the Founder is enshrined. Our annual obligation should be to make a pilgrimage to the Head Temple. We have been practicing Buddhism here in the Okanagan for close to 80 years, and over the years there have been many changes in our world. Within our Buddhist Community there are also many changes as well. Not only do we have many members of Japanese descent, but we also have many from other cultural backgrounds as well. Canadians in general are familiar with Tibetan and Zen Buddhist traditions, but most Canadians are only now beginning to discover that our Pure Land School is the most popular school of Buddhism in China, Japan and Vietnam. We have been having our TSS (Thousand Sutra Samadhi) study groups, and have been exploring the Primary Scriptures of our Pure Land School: The Larger Sutra, Contemplation Sutra, Amida Sutra, and Shoshinge. In the past, not many of our members were able to directly access and read through these Primary Sutras in English, due to a lack of English materials. They were limited to secondary sources or commentaries on portions of the Sutras. It was difficult for us to understand the nuances of the teachings of the Nembutsu, without reading the Primary sources and experiencing them first-hand. Now that standardized translations are available, we can directly encounter and fully experience and understand the Scriptures. Many TSS members have attended numerous sessions, and have acquired a good understanding of the Pure Land Sutras and our Nembutsu faith, as well as Buddhist history in general. Since they are reading the primary sources, they now are very confident and are truly appreciative of the Sutras and Shinran Shonin s teachings. They have now become messengers of Shinran Shonin s teachings. Shinran s teachings reveal to us our true human nature. He shows us that our desires are countless, and that human nature is essentially one of being a Bonbu (foolish one). Despite significant advances in human knowledge and technology over the centuries, there continues to be much human suffering in the world. Foolishness is an inevitable part of our human life in spite of our best intentions. As part of the human condition, we all have our faults and shortcomings. As a result, conflict can inevitably result, particularly if we overlook our own limitations and see only the faults of others. There is a story about four people who began to practice silent meditation. On their first night, the candle burned down to the end, and the light extinguished. When the last flicker of light was gone, and the room became completely dark, one person blurted out the light has gone out. The person sitting next to him, in a critical tone said, You re not supposed to talk! The third person, then reprimanded the second one saying, You, too, are disqualified! After a short while, the fourth said, condescendingly I m the only one who didn t speak. The faults of others are easy to see, but our own faults are difficult to recognize. Awareness of our own behaviour is often difficult and is often avoided, especially if the truth is painful. However, we must be totally dedicated to truth and to always hold truth to be more important, and be accepting of it, rather than simply seeking our own comfort. This requires continuous selfexamination; a willingness to be personally challenged; and total honesty. None of these things comes painlessly. Let us allow Amida s light to flow into what we do and how we act. Namo Amida Butsu In Gassho Rev. Yasuhiro Miyakawa

Temple Executive 2011 thank-you Much like a few years ago when the Executive underwent some major shuffling, this year posed another challenge in filling the board, as 3 dedicated directors submitted their regrets in accepting another term of office. Past President, Alec Pelletier along with Alan Yamaoka and Tim Tahara have stepped down, and we thank them for serving as directors and wish them health and happiness. Thankfully Genevra Cavanaugh, Michael Martin and Laurie Takeda have accepted nominations and I m sure will do their best to represent the wishes of the Members. Page 3 At the Temple AGM it was obvious that we will need everyone s patience as the new executive get s their sea legs (as Genevera describes). All the positions and especially the Presidents position require dedication beyond just one person (especially when everyone has jobs and other commitments) both Herb Tanaka and Shirley Tanemura agreed to work closely together to co-chair the demands of office. Personally I feared we were headed for an all night session and/or would have to bring out primitive torture devices to break down someone s will. We should all be thankful for their dedication to the future of our Temple. My hope would have been to have more support from Membership, however wishful that thinking maybe, please join me in congratulating our New 2011 Executive, In Gassho, jiro Message from the Editor: Year-end Report submitted at AGM The Temple s Dharma Express had another successful year of reports, articles and calendars of Temple happenings. I worried when Suey decided to retire his quill, yet we have been able to fill the pages each month. Hopefully everyone has received positive comments about my Just Rambling Two, the other to I have had little luck in recruiting anyone to submit on a regular basis, articles of interest for our readers. So I will continue, when and if I can no guarantees. The biggest news is of course our New Web Site! After promising for so many years a new more updated web site became available this fall for anyone and everyone on the World Wide Web. I can report that at one time my wife was contemplating having a bed moved into my office as she felt I Buddhism of the Heart spend most of my time in there. As mentioned, I terminated our contract with our web host Canada Web Hosting and went with CMGCalgary. I had hoped to get CMGCalgary to build our web site, but the cost of that would have been in the thousands, so I undertook the task myself by no means a professional job, but hopefully one we can be proud of. I fear I m making myself irreplaceable in terms of the Newsletter and Web Site, something that I m not totally comfortable with in case I get sick or get arthritis or get Alzheimer or get really sick. I have consciously taken on the three largest commitment jobs on the Temple Executive (I am sick), but I will continue to fulfill my duties of office as long as I can thank you for your continued support. In Gassho, Jiro Although I can t claim to be good or joyful all the time, I think Other Power does lead me to do more good than I would if I were as ego-bound as before I encountered the Vow. Perhaps more significant, relying on Other Power allows me to avoid a certain amount of unskillful behavior that I would have otherwise rushed into. Even though I fall back on myself time and again and create difficulties, Amida has got a hold of me and always draws me back. I m thankful for being given the opportunity to love and be loved by others, and to express that love through service. The little good I do in this world is, truly, the least I can do in return, but it is what I can do.

Another Member! I m happy to announce we have another Temple member coming from our Taiko group Naoko Nakamura. She was born in Hyogo, Japan and has lived in Canada for almost 18 years, first in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto and now in Kelowna. She is currently employed at Walmart as a cake decorator and is interested in Music, Baking and Crafts. She joined Yamabiko Taiko over a year ago and has shown up at various Temple fund raising projects. Naoko is a Buddhist, she belonged to Soka Gakkai International, which is based Nichiren Daishonin s Rambling two: After enjoying a family feast, I was clearing the dishes and I asked my nephew s son (13) for help doing the dishes as my wife s parents don t have a dish washer. His reply was I don t do dishes! We have a dishwasher. Even with trying to explain about how the ladies prepared such a great meal and the men clear-up and do the dishes he was adamant that he would not help and went off to play video games. Modern conveniences like dishwashers, microwaves and computers have freed-up a lot of our time, but what we do with that time is what concerns me. Don t get me wrong, I m not going to judge my nephews parenting skills, what I m trying to wrap my head around is when does this generation learn Buddhism, Lotus Sutra. Naoko is fun to be around, enjoys to laugh and has a gifted musical background. You would be amazed at her cake decorating abilities, she made a cake with Taiko drummers and drums for our group (very life like). Please join me in welcoming her to our Temple and making her feel at home. In Gassho, jiro Page 6 about helping others, commitment, being a part of the community, leaving a legacy, spiritual health and life skills, like doing dishes? We all need to lead by example and show that we are willing to spend a portion of that additional time on activities that benefit others. As a Buddhist, I recall that sentences that include the words ego or self don t fulfill us with any meaningful substance. I can appreciate that being a high scorer on a video game is satisfying, but hardly memorable. We weren t given all this additional time to leave what is truly important on the back burner. Society has changed, maybe not for the better, please reflect, rethink and realign your life in the coming New Year In Gassho, jiro (I do dishes) 2011 Temple Executive: Temple President: Herb Tanaka Co-President: Shirley Tanemura 1st Vice President: Vacant 2nd Vice President: Gord Lacey Secretary: Derek Mayeda Treasurer: Jerry Takeda BC Interior Shin Buddhist Temple Representative: Reg Tomiye Membership: Pegi Uyeyama Religious: Michael Martin...Altar Attendants (not an Executive position): Alan Yamaoka Maintenance: Isao Terai & Gord Lacey Newsletter and Web Site: Jerry Takeda Public Relations & Advertising: Rick Suzuki & Laurie Takeda Women s Association (Fujinkai): Shirley Tanemura Dharma School: Herb Tanaka No not executive but kitchen staff at Keirokai 2011

Temple Executive: Happy New Year everyone! I would like to extend my thanks to Alec Pelletier, Alan Yamaoka and Tim Tahara for their dedicated efforts tending to Temple matters over the past years that they served on the Temple board. As they step aside, I hope they will enjoy being away but will consider serving again in the future. The business of the Temple takes a great deal of personal time and effort. Thanks to their understanding families for allowing them time to fulfill their duties. We have three members who have consented to join the board this year. They are Laurie Takeda, Genevra Cavanaugh and Michael Martin. I m confident that they will bring a positive insight to the deliberations. Thanks to the remaining devoted members for agreeing to serve for another year. Isao Terai, Jerry Takeda, Shirley Tanemura, Reg Tomiye, Gord Lacey, Rick Suzuki and Pegi Hayashi- Uyeyama round out the board. Please give us your support and don t hesitate to raise any concerns or suggestions with any of us. This past December, I was asked to say a few words on behalf of the Temple members at the funeral service for Mr. Aiji Hokazono. As I sat down to write my thoughts, I began to think about the concept of expressing appreciation. People always have wonderful things to say about a person after they have passed away. Even people who led less than stellar Page 7 lives have nothing but good things said about them at their funerals. I find this to be a rather quirky thing about human nature. We are all products of our up bringing whether it is our parents, siblings extended families or the community at large. When I think about the Temple family, going back to my grandparent s time and subsequent generations, it is very apparent that a very large number of people worked very hard to build our community. All of us, from whatever cultural background, have benefited from the lives of our fore fathers and mothers. At some point in our family histories, someone decided to take a gamble and move to Canada, often with very little in the way of material possessions. Many did not even possess a grasp on the English language. Their efforts have resulted in the relatively easy lives we now enjoy. I believe we should express our appreciative thought while the individuals are still with us, to receive them. From Reverend Miyakawa and Doctor Valerie, to the tireless seniors, the young children, their parents and everyone that takes part in Dharma School, to my family, my sister Peggy, for dedicating her life to look after the needs on our aged mother, my employer and co worker and friends, I am fortunate indeed. Thankyou all for continuing to enrich my life. In Gassho, Herb Suffering As you all are probably aware by now is that we are grandparents now to a beautiful little boy, TJ, short for Trevor James. My son in law is a huge Canucks fan and hence the name Trevor. Anyhow it wasn t without drama his arrival into this world. My message is of suffering. You see my wife was having a lot of trouble with her gall bladder. This involved pain, nausea, anxiety and stress. We had been waiting since Jan to have it removed but with our health system overloaded we waited and waited. Finally in Oct. it flared up and didn t abate. Off and on for the next couple of days we were in and out of the emergency dept. at KGH. Finally after much stress and little sleep she was admitted on the Wed. and put on the surgery wait list. That Friday, I was unable to go to the hockey game as I was with my wife. I gave the tickets to my daughter and son in law. Wouldn t you know it but she started to go into labor at the game. They didn t phone me as they didn t want to worry me anymore than I already was. So later that night I came home, figuring that the surgery would most likely be delayed until Monday. I had watched with concern, the suffering that my wife was experiencing for most of the last week. At around 6am a nurse phoned and told me they were taking my wife in very shortly and what was it that I wanted to tell her. I was quite groggy and mumble something about good luck and that I would be there soon. As I got up out of bed my son in law called and told me my daughter was in full labor. I kicked it into high gear and got to the hospital. I couldn t get any info about my wife but was able to see my

Suffering: continued daughter. I was able to help her for a little while and then seen my wife after she was brought back to her room. She was very sore and hungry. For the most part her suffering was lessened quite a bit. I told her about the impending birth and she was very saddened to not be with her daughter in her time of need. I think it s a woman s thing. The good thing was they were both on the third floor. I was glad I had thrown on my running shoes. After around 20 hours of labor (suffering), my daughter gave birth around 9pm. I was able to wheel my wife down and see the baby. She was the first to hold him. I was so relieved to see that both had done well. I was taken Page 8 aback at the forms of suffering I witnessed. I know it wasn t easy for that little baby to be born. My daughter became a mother and has the proof of suffering through the labor. My wife had many months of poor health. The people at the hospital were stories of suffering and sadness. It is so easy to take things for granted when everything is clicking along. It would be an eye opener for all of us to spend some time at the hospital. It was for me. I am so thankful for all that I have. Not all people leave there with a glad heart. In Gassho, Gord Relax with Friends at the B.C. Federation Convention Harrison Hot Springs Sept 23-25, 2011: The BC Federation (BCJSBCF) will be holding the 2011 AGM Convention at Harrison Hot Springs Resort on September 23-25th, We need to have signup early next year to reserve the right size meeting rooms and right number of hotel rooms. The convention promises a very streamlined agenda for Saturday morning and lunch with hospitality suites to meet up with friends and lots of free time to plan individual and group activities. In fact, to get reservations for facilities such as the spa and boat tours, each of us will have to call several weeks ahead. For your planning consideration, we have approximated the cost (a lot of meals you will have your own choice of restaurant and cost) for all meals from Breakfast Saturday to Breakfast Sunday, hospitality suites and 2 nights accommodations not including optional activities at: Couple - $500 to $550 (double occupancy) Family (4) - $650 to $750 (quad occupancy) A limited number of units can accommodate 2 couples reducing the cost further. Right now we are just taking a count of who is interested and might need transportation. Commitments for reservations are not required until May 23rd, Costs are based upon what rooms you choose, restaurants for meals and activities. We still need volunteers to help plan so please call or Greg Chor if you can spare a few hours to plan part of the convention. (bcfconvention@gmail.com ) or if you have questions.
