How joyous I am, my heart and mind being rooted in the Buddha-ground of the universal Vow, and my thoughts and feelings flowing within the dharma-ocean, which is beyond comprehension! 1 I am happily writing this article, which means I survived my first ever, camping trip! I must gratefully express my sincere appreciation to Dina Honda, Mike Nagamoto, and Lena Yin, who were the camping organizers. I would also like to thank all of our Sangha members, their friends, and family members who joined us and made this a wonderful experience for me! Although I was not able to stay for the entire time of the trip, I still have many wonderful memories of camping. Many of you might have learned that I did not get to experience camping while growing up, so I was a bit nervous about roughing it during the temple s camping trip. Luckily, we stayed at a KOA campground and I was fortunate to stay in a cute, little, wood cabin. Days leading up to the trip, I reminded myself to have an open mind to this new experience since I did not know what to expect. In Zen Buddhism, there is the concept of having a beginners mind, which is called shoshin ( 初心 ). It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner in that subject would. 2 This beginners mind allowed me to fully experience the beauty of nature around me, appreciate the good company I was in, and to enjoy all of the delicious food that was prepared over an open fire. There were many times during this camping weekend when I thought, That s Buddhism right there! For example, we spent our days and nights around the campfire, which kept us warm and also cooked our food for us. We also had the fire s smoke and ash blown in our direction from the wind and I could not help to think about the letter, On White Ashes, which was written by Rennyo Shonin. From this smoke and ash, I was reminded of the impermanence of all beings, feelings, and events, which caused me to be more mindful of everything and everyone around me during our trip. This in turn created even more gratitude for the opportunity to be camping. I had another, That s Buddhism right there! moment during one of the delicious parts of camping S mores! As you know, s mores are made with a piece of chocolate and a melted marshmallow that are sandwiched between two graham crackers. The marshmallows are heated over the campfire and very gooey and sticky, which brings all of the ingredients together perfectly. I thought about the Three Treasurers while enjoying this yummy treat. The sticky marshmallow is the Dharma because the Buddhist teachings bind all of us together. The chocolate is the Sangha. It is comprised of wonderful ingredients/qualities and can provide comfort when you need it most. The Buddha is the graham crackers because the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha always embraces us and can hold us together when life gets a little messy from time to time. Overlooking the ocean during this camping trip made my heart overflow with gratitude and I too, was overjoyed to be in such wonderful company. Until next year, my fellow campers! In Gassho, Rev. Candice Shibata 1 From The True Teaching, Practice, and Realization VI, CWS, Accessed 8/15/16.

PRESIDENT S MESSAGE That s all your house is, a place for all your stuff with a cover on it - George Carlin In preparation for the 10th Anniversary of the Jodo Shinshu Center, the BCA asked to use our parking lot to place a dumpster so they could clean house. In exchange for the use of our parking lot, they offered that we could throw away what we needed to clean out from our Temple. I went by today to take a look at how much was amassed and I started thinking. Seeing that the dumpster had a lot of spare room, I decided to take over a vacuum cleaner from my house that I had been wanting to get rid of for some time (I will plead Presidential privilege here). My daughter asked me where I was going and I responded that I was getting rid of the old vacuum cleaner from the garage to which she replied, You aren t taking anything else are you? From the time I started coming to the Temple, I have been taught that material possessions should not be the focus of my attention as material possessions can lead to suffering. Yes, material possessions, when they become a significant source of personal fulfillment, or attempts to fulfill myself, can be dangerous. In our house there is a constant debate over what we can get rid of, be it documents that come in the mail, purchases made long in the past, or things that have just always been with us. We know we want and need to get rid of stuff but we cannot agree. I may ask that we get rid of toys the kids do not play with anymore ( they are just taking up room )and Millie may ask to get rid of the clothing I have worn too much ( you have worn holes through the elbows ) to which each of us has responses. Regarding my clothes, I always assert that the clothing in question still has utility as I can just roll up the sleeves and it will look good. Regarding the kids toys though, there is a different response. It is not centered around the physical utility as the toys are never going to be played with again but rather from the emotional utility they provide. Attached to the toys, along with the dust they have collected, are a sense of stability and the memories the kids have with these objects, memories that bring joy. By seeing them sitting on the shelf, there is a reassurance given. I realize it would have been good to have a germane quote from Shinran Shonin but George Carlin was what came to my mind and I do not think he was far off the mark but he did miss one thing though. A house is a place where you keep all of your stuff but when a loving family is within the house, it is no longer a generic building but rather a home. The stuff to an untrained eye may not hold much value but to those within its walls, the memories attached provide testimony in the shaping of who they are. In Gassho, Takashi Nikaidoh BBT President 2016

One Night in a Restaurant By Diane Ames As I walked into a restaurant I will not name, I noticed that there were policemen all over the place, apparently questioning the staff. I heard snatches such as, "..a scar on his face about here " " about this tall " "What happened?" I asked my waitress. "Were you robbed?" "Oh no," she said dismissively. "It was just a former employee making trouble." "A disgruntled former employee? Did he have a gun?" "Oh no, nothing serious like that." "Not a gun," added another waitress. "He had a knife. Oh well, at least the police are taking it seriously this time." "This time?" ""Can I take your order?" said my waitress. I looked around and did not see any ambulances, blood, or corpses. I did see a policeman in a far corner, talking at length with a waiter who looked gravely shaken. Were there really wall-to-wall police in here because "nothing serious" happened? What had I apparently missed by minutes? Above all, what could have happened to me? In retrospect, I guess I must admit that I was not concerned about that waiter, who apparently had a lot more reason to be frightened than I did. I never even saw the maniac with the knife, yet I immediately became preoccupied with how he could have menaced me. Such is the nature of the self. As soon as it perceives or imagines a real threat to itself, its thoughts begin to center on self-protection to the exclusion of all else. Sometimes this leads it to be callous to others, even cruel. The only remedy is self-examination and, of course, the nembutsu.

"Shin Buddhist Insight in Daily Life and Beyond" Berkeley Buddhist Temple Spring Seminar September 11, 2016 Kenneth Kenshin Tanaka Professor, Musashino University and President, Int. Assoc. of Shin Buddhist Studies 12:30 First talk and question and answer (Beginner's level) "Introduction to the Shin Buddhism: Basic Teachings and Practice for Contemporary America" 1:45 Break 2:00 Second talk and question and answer (Intermediate level) Shinjin Awakening: Its Nature and Significance for Us 3:00 End (followed by Book Signing) About the Speaker Kenneth Kenshin Tanaka grew up and attended Dharma School in California. While being an active member of the Young Buddhist Association (YBA), he aspired to study Buddhism, which he did at Stanford Univ. (B.A.), a temple in Thailand, Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS)(M.A.), Tokyo University (M.A.), and Univ. of California at Berkeley (Ph.D.). After teaching at IBS and serving as a resident priest in a Jodo Shinshu temple in California, Dr. Tanaka is currently Professor and Dean of Buddhist Education at Musashino University in Tokyo. He also serves as President of two academic associations, the Int. Assoc. of Shin Buddhist Studies and Japanese Assoc. for the Study of Buddhism and Psychology. His publications include The Dawn of Chinese Pure Land Buddhist Doctrine (The State Univ. of New York, 1990), Ocean: An Introduction to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in America (WisdomOcean Publication, 1997), and Amerika bukkyo (in Japanese, meaning American Buddhism ) (Musashino University, 2010). His books have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese. His family was a member of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple for many years and children played basketball with the Sangha team.

BBT Camping Trip In August, 67 BBT family members and friends traveled to Manchester Beach KOA on the Mendocino Coast. Everyone enjoyed: Preparing and devouring delicious meals featuring abalone, uni, tritip, curry, s mores, banana boats and delicious home baked goods Walks to the beach Customizing leather belts and key chains (thank you, Mike!) Tie-dying t-shirts, pillow cases, etc. Scavenger hunt, board games, volleyball, soccer Relaxing and enjoying each other s company The long-anticipated revival of the infamous Slide Show To learn more, you need to come next year! If you have young children and haven t camped before, this is the PERFECT opportunity for you! The kids have a BLAST and we handle the organizing! There are restrooms and showers, even a pool and hot tub! There are also a limited number of cabins available to rent. We have the campsite reserved again next year. Mark your calendars for August 3-6, If you re interested in renting a cabin, please Dina Honda at info@berkeleysangha.org ASAP for cabins!

My Second BBT Camping Trip, 11 Years Later This was only my second Berkeley Buddhist Temple camping trip. The first was back in Some things were very different. Most of the kids on this trip were not even born yet in 2005, but a few who I had met on my first camping trip were also on this one, all grown up. (See photo.) One of the Slide Show skits illustrated very well the transition from little camping kids to big camping kids! Another difference was that on the first camping trip I slept in a tent. Well, I was 11 years younger then. On this trip thanks to some very kind and thoughtful sangha members I stayed in a deluxe cabin with a bed, a shower, kitchen with refrigerator, microwave oven, and best of all, a heater! (Thank you, everyone!) Yet another difference was that on the first trip I was a complete newcomer to BBT and Buddhism. On this trip, I was a minister s assistant and was even given the honor of leading the service we held on Saturday evening. Yet some things didn t change. The great organization (thanks Mike, Dina, Lena, Denise, and everyone else who made things flow so smoothly), the fun and camaraderie, the time for bonding with the kids, the wonderful food, the comfort of being in nature among family, and the knowledge that Amida was there among us, all remained the same. If you can, join us next time! You will love it! Namo Amida Butsu! Gassho, Edythe Vassall 8/15/16

CONGRATULATIONS TO KELLY GRIFFIN AND TEAM USA!!! If you ve never watched a game of rugby you re really missing out! It s fast paced, exciting, brutal and exhilarating. If anyone tells you that you play like a girl, be sure to accept the compliment!!! These athletes are tough and I didn t see a one cry or complain after the hardest hits you can imagine. (I d be a blubbering mess after one tackle!) To illustrate, one of the top Aussie players was knocked out of the game in the first 30 seconds yikes really monstrous hit! Kelly at Deodoro Stadium But when you re watching someone we ve watched grow up in our temple it s thrilling and out of this world!!! Words can t describe how excited and proud I felt watching CAPTAIN Kelly Griffin lead her team out onto the field for the first women s rugby competition of the Olympics in Brazil. I don t even know the rules but I was out of my seat, jumping up and down, yelling in support for almost the entire game each time I watched. All of Kelly s family members, wife Ashely and her daughter Quinn, Kelly and Ashely s baby Connor, best brother ever Jeff and of COURSE PROUD PARENTS Linda and Craig were there to cheer her on. I can t even imagine how delirious they must feel! After losing the opening game to Fiji 7-12, the team came storming back to crush Columbia Then, scoring first, they stymied #1 ranked Australia, and ended the thriller in a tie 12-12, advancing to the quarter finals. Next up #2 ranked New Zealand. They played their hearts out but NZ won with only one score, 5-0, knocking out our team of the medal round. However, they got payback against Fiji, defeating them 12-7 and then dominating France to win 19-5 and place 5th! So CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM USA AND LOTS OF LOVE TO KELLY GRIFFIN!!!
