4 We, the members of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple, join as one to express our deep sadness over the loss of many lives and the destruction of homes, towns and livelihoods caused by the terrible earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan. Our thoughts of loving kindness and concern are directed to the people (children and adults, women and men, rich and poor) whose lives have been forever changed by natural disasters and tragedies in all countries and places in the world. These tragedies remind us once again of the truth of impermanence that even the ground and the seas will move and change in their time. We are also reminded of the interdependence of all life that we are but small participants in the great flow of life and that our lives and those of all others are so closely linked. At this difficult time we entrust ourselves all the more to the boundless wisdom and compassion of Amida Buddha, and as we do, our heartfelt thoughts of sympathy and acts of compassion reach out unconditionally to all the victims of disasters regardless of where they may be. Namu Amida Butsu March 13, 2011 In response to the tremendous need of the people of Japan at this time, the Berkeley Buddhist Temple and the Buddhist Churches of America have initiated a fundraising drive. If you wish to contribute, please make checks payable to Berkeley Buddhist Temple, note Japan Earthquake/ Tsunami Relief in the memo section, and remit by April 11. The Temple will then write one check to BCA, which will be forwarded to the Hongwanji Social Welfare Department to assist with the relief efforts in Japan. Thank you very much for your contribution to this important relief effort.

6 A Century of Gratitude and Joy The War Years ON DECEMBER 7, 1941, Japanese military forces attacked the US Naval Fleet at Pearl Harbor. "Almost immediately there followed a roundup of Issei community leaders, businessmen, teachers of Japanese martial arts, leaders of the Japanese Association, and Shinto and Buddhist priests." 1 The NABM and individual temples proclaimed their loyalty to the US, but the effort proved fruitless. President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, authorizing the exclusion of anyone from prescribed military areas. All persons of Japanese descent were told to report to assembly centers for relocation. Homes were sold or abandoned, stores closed and lost, farmland rented out or entrusted to friends, personal possessions sold or stored. Temples were closed and boarded up. 2 At the Berkeley Buddhist Temple, activities came to an abrupt stop in April ,170 persons of Japanese ancestry were evacuated, sent to assembly centers and then to 10 relocation centers. War Relocation Authority statistics reveal that 61,710 (55.5%) declared themselves to be Buddhists. 76,650 were American born, and of them, 35,327 were Buddhist. Among those not born in the US, 26,392 were Buddhist. In the camps, all Buddhists initially were made to worship together. This led to the formation in some camps of a United Buddhist Church. Later in some camps, the Jōdo Shinshū members, who were greatest in number, withdrew from the United Buddhist Church to conduct their own services. Services were generally held in mess halls or recreation buildings. Buddhist groups also held Obon, Ohigan and Hanamatsuri services, as well as funerals, memorial services and weddings. Many Buddhist followers fashioned their own Obutsudan out of scrap wood. In early 1944, the NABM met in Topaz, UT to form a new institution, the Buddhist Churches of America. In its 1944 constitution, the BCA sought to minimize relations with the Hongwanji, unite the Nishi and Higashi Hongwanji temples in America, place Nisei in all offices with Issei in advisory roles, make English its official language, and make Buddhism more inclusive, less sectarian, and more adaptable to Americans. 4 In January 1945, the exclusion order was rescinded entirely. Internees then began to leave the camps to rebuild their lives. They were given $25 and a train ticket home. Resettlement led to anxiety and insecurity and, with no place to live and no work, many former internees took up residence at the reopened Buddhist temples. In Berkeley, one of the first families to return was that of Hike and Taye Oda. They and others worked hard to help their fellow members get adjusted to living in freedom again. For over a year, Berkeley Temple members operated the temple as a hostel, community center and place of religious refuge, as they waited for the return of Rev. and Mrs. Imamura. Namu Amida Butsu Rev. 7 Presidents Message: EARTHQUAKE-TSUNAMI RELIEF FOR JAPAN Dear Sangha Friends, In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, first and foremost, our thoughts go out to all those who have been affected by these terrible events. As the co-presidents for our temple we felt it was wise to devote this space to discuss what we at the Berkeley Buddhist Temple can do to assist with the relief and recovery efforts. The Buddhist Churches of America is organizing a relief effort at the national level. As in past efforts, most recently for the Haiti and Indonesian disasters, the BBT will act as a local collection point for donations. Please read the article Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Relief at the front of this newsletter for information on how to participate in this effort led by the BCA. Additionally, as many of you know, the BBT designates a certain portion of our funds, such as the annual gift from the Satsuki Bazaar proceeds, to charitable groups and projects. Although the various temple committees have already begun the selection process for this year s recipients, the process will be amended in light of the earthquake and tsunami. There are a number of organizations that are accepting immediate donations for relief efforts. Below is a partial list: Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California: Japanese Red Cross: American Red Cross: When disasters occur, we are reminded of the fragility and transience of our lives. In closing, we would like to quote from the letter On the White Ashes by Rennyo Shonin: As we deeply observe the transient form of human life, we realize that in this world, from the beginning to end, what is momentary and passing is the illusory course of human life. Thus, we have not heard of anyone receiving human form which lasts for ten thousand years. The course of life ebbs very rapidly. Can anyone preserve their body for a hundred years at the present time? Not knowing whether it will come today or tomorrow, those who depart before us are as countless as the drops of dew. Therefore, in the morning we may have radiant health; in the evening we may be white ashes Thus, we see that what we cannot control is the passing away of the young and old alike. Therefore, we should all look to our future life and with Faith in Amida Buddha repeat the Holy Name. In Gassho, Willie Fernandez and Art Nishimura, Berkeley Buddhist Temple Co-Presidents

9 This Body Is an Old Cart Which Can Only Be Kept Going with Much Trouble, Ananda by Diane Ames Now lie down on your back with both knees bent and your feet flat on the mat, said the physical therapist. Tighten the muscles in your buttocks as much as you can. Keep them tight while you push your bottom up a few inches off the mat, maintain that position for three seconds, and lower yourself slowly back to the mat. Do this twenty times a day. For how long? I asked. For the rest of your life. And don t forget the leg lifts, the pelvic tilts, the wall squats to be done in three feet of water... But I m already doing plantar fasciitis stretches, balance exercises... Are you doing these things to look like Jane Fonda, or are you doing them because you used to have intolerably sore feet and fall down on the pavement at frequent intervals? And there s all that water walking six days a week. Without which you would probably become diabetic. Your blood sugar has been teetering on the brink for thirteen years, remember? And you re getting all this physical therapy because you had so much back pain, you had trouble sleeping at night for a while there. Remember, you are only going to get one precious human body. Don t say that. The one that got issued to me turns out to leave something to be desired. Can you bring me a mustard seed from a person of your age who has no medical problems? All that lives is prey to sickness, old age, and death. Even the body of Sakyamuni Buddha eventually wore out. He admitted, towards the end, that it was like an old cart that could only be kept going with much trouble. Yet he kept that body going for eighty years so he could teach. Didn t he reject first mindless hedonism and then asceticism on the grounds that one s precious human body must receive sensible care, not be heedlessly thrown away? Without it we cannot follow the Dharma or, well, live. But if I only get one life, do I have to spend it doing wall squats? All my life I ve been a library and book store sort of person, not a YMCA person. Wall squats just aren t me. If you don t strengthen your core muscles, your back pain will return. You may very well become unable to sit at a computer and write. I ll do the wall squats.

18 Sangha C-Team Update The Berkeley Sangha Girls C-Team has concluded its season. This was the girls first season at the C-level. They were challenged at every turn, as most of their opponents had more experienced players. Whether it was due to Maya, Noel, Celeste or Kylie s shooting, Madison, Sabrina or Megan s rebounding, or Maddie, Cailyn or Skye s defense, each game provided all of us great excitement as we gave each team a run for its money. All of the girls have continued to develop great friendships not only on the team but with players of teams with whom we compete. We look forward to the girls continuing to play and to develop in the coming year. Many thanks to Dennis Sakurai and Tamiko Escalante, who worked so hard to coach the team. Sangha E-Team Update The Berkeley Sangha E-Team finished its regular season and has started off the tournament season with first place finish in the E-Bronze division of the Berkeley Ohtani Tournament! All of the players, Mia, Miya, Matteo, Lucas, Kaito, Kyle, Karlie, Peyton, Charlene and Anna, have demonstrated how a team can function well, including crisp passes, dexterous dribbling, implacable defense and accurate shooting. We thank Akemi Hamai and Louie Mendoza for their efforts in developing such a great team, and all of those Sangha members who came out on various Sundays to root the team on. We look forward to our last tournament on March 20th in Fremont and to a few months of rest. A Tribute to Jennifer Tasaka: Experience the gift of today Every day is a gift is listed as a favorite quotation on Jennifer Tasaka s facebook account. A beautiful saying that, without much thought, I d likely click the Like button on. Yet, what does it really mean? I especially wondered what it meant to Jennifer during the last year of her life when she was diagnosed with gastric cancer. Jennifer and her family joined the temple in January When they were introduced to the Sangha, Jennifer revealed, quite nonchalantly, that she was suffering from a rare form of gastric cancer. I was shocked and, at the same time, in awe of her ability to share such a private thing. Yet, it seems that s how Jennifer was, true to herself and to others. Authentic. I further got to know her during the Summer BBQ at the Richmond Country Club. I had mentioned to her and Chuck that BBT had a basketball team, and asked if Kyle and Karli were interested in joining. Sure enough, the following Friday, Kyle and Karli were at practice. It seems that the ability to seize an opportunity, and go for it was also a true Jennifer trait. Looking back, she was probably aware of the limited time she had, and wanted her family to secure lasting ties to the BBT community. Awareness. As the year passed and her illness started to take its toll, there would be fewer and fewer interactions. The last time I saw her was January 28, She was very weak, and by that time, every motion, every breath must have been extremely difficult. Even though she stayed in the van and was not able to watch the game or see Kyle make a basket at the buzzer, she mustered enough strength to give all of us a hug as she whispered words of good-bye and thanks. Appreciation. As I reflect on the short time that I knew Jennifer, I will always see her as someone who knew what it meant to live a life of Awareness, Authenticity, and Appreciation despite the most difficult of circumstances. It s easy to get wrapped up in mundane daily activities. We all do. However, I urge you to not lose sight of what s important and to truly experience that Every day is a gift. We miss you, Jennifer. -- Emily Moya
