4 Thoughts on Ohigan The purest time in nature's realm, in early spring and fall, These are the days when hearts of life become one with self and all. 1 WITH THE ARRIVAL OF FALL and our return to the temple to hear the Dharma after a summer break, this is a perfect time to reflect once again on the meaning of Ohigan ( お彼岸 ) in our lives. Here are the words of some Dharma teachers that we might consider. & From Traditions of Jodoshinshu Hongwanji-ha, by Rev. Masao Kodani & Rev. Russell Hamada (Los Angeles, Senshin Temple Publications, 1995), Spring Higan Gathering, March 21 Autumn Higan Gathering, September 23 Sanbutsu-e - "praise-buddha-gathering" Higan, which means the "other shore" of Nirvana or enlightenment as opposed to "this shore" of Samsara or delusion, is observed by Japanese Buddhists during the spring equinox of each year. In Jodoshinshu, the Higan observance is also called Sanbutsu-e or Gathering in Praise of the Buddha, which is one of the two purposes of ritual gatherings - the other being to listen to the teachings. During these two times of the year in Japan, the days and nights are equal in length and the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. It was a time for Buddhists to meditate on the harmony of nature which pervades the universe and to devote oneself to the of this harmony in one's own inner life. The name Sanbutsu-e is used for either of the two Higan observances. The Higan observance is not mentioned in Indian or Chinese records and is believed to have originated in Japan in the time of Shotoku Taishi. The two times of the year are described in the Meditation Sutra as appropriate to the first meditation of facing the setting sun in the west, the symbolic direction of the Pure Land of Amida. Traditionally Higan is a week-long observance from March 18th-24th and September 20 the 4th day as the main day of observance. During the week-long observance of study and meditation, emphasis is placed on the observance of the Six Paramitas which bring us to "the other shore." Paramita is the Sanskrit for "other-shore." 1. The Path of Giving - Dana 2. The Path of Right Behavior - Sila 3. The Path of Endurance and Patience - Kshanti 4. The Path of Endeavor or Effort - Virya 5. The Path of Meditation - Dhyana 6. The Path of Wisdom - Prajna The Jodo Shinshu emphasis is upon the basic harmony of all elements of the universe as represented by the virtues of Amida Buddha. & From "Balance," by Rev. John Iwohara, in Dharma Talks of the Four Seasons, No. 2 (Los Angeles, So. District Ministers Association, 1995), The equinox only occurs twice a year. On each of these days, because of the natural balance found in these days, it has allowed me to reflect on my life and the balance or unbalance found therein. In this reflection, however, I have been allowed to see how even just one day of my life is filled with "the path of truth that has no superior." Regardless of how hot or cold it may be, each and every day of my life is the Nembutsu. & From Kaneko Daiei, Higan no Sekai (The World of the Other Shore) (Zenninsha, 1948) The world of the other shore is the true and real land that we have never seen; and yet, at the same time, it is our spiritual home, which lies within our hearts. Namu Amida Butsu Rev. D. Matsumoto September From Higan I, lyrics by Seigen H. Yamaoka, music by Hiro Imamura, in Shin Buddhist Service Book (San Francisco, BCA, 1994),

5 President s Message Sangha Work Party III Although there were no Dharma Family Services the first 4 weeks of August, there were Days of Service. Temple volunteers completed the new deck and landscape improvements at the home of the winning bidder of the Sangha Work Party; new panels and stairs were crafted for the onaijin. Volunteering is a way to transform teachings into action. Unity and purpose come together to enable us to look past ourselves. We are fortunate to have families and friends share their time with us, and I encourage everyone to become a part of the Sangha. 7 My Second Tibetan Buddhist-like Vision by Diane Ames I had another vision of the Mother Nature goddess in her most wrathful aspect. Clearly I m cracking up. This time the goddess s hair was fire. In her right hand she held a torch; in her left hand she held a flamethrower. She danced through the blazing hell that was the Russian taiga. Endless forests, Russian wildlife, entire villages and Russian military bases, the Russian economy, were all incinerated in her path. Wildfires surrounded Moscow like a demon army. Within the city temperatures were infernal, and the air was choked with smoke. People gasped for breath, and some collapsed to rise no more. Please, mighty lady! I cried, prostrating myself. The whole country is on fire! What can you expect? she replied. They re having their hottest summer in a thousand years. Welcome to climate change! But I protested, wasn t the Gulf oil spill enough? Evidently not. The humans seemed to gain no wisdom from that one, so I decided to unleash ten Biblical plagues. You mean the plague of heat that caused parts of Asia to reach 125, even 128 degrees? And the plague of unprecedented floods that are washing away Pakistan? And now the plague of fire! Yahoo! But look, you can t enlighten us by hitting us over the head! Why not? Zen masters do it all the time. But have you no pity? I pleaded. The morgues are overflowing in Moscow. And poor Pakistan... It s you humans who must show some elementary compassion! she thundered. I can only warn you. It s you who must have the elementary wisdom to undo what you ve done to all life OR ELSE! Wait a minute! I said as the vision began to fade. You mentioned ten plagues. I ve only seen three. JUST WAIT!
