1 Audrey Hepburn: I think your article says a lot. Upon Reflection: Explanation of Paintings and Process called Wakeful Dreaming Brett began his Discovery Paintings at the Tyler School of Art in Fall of Unexplained physical symptoms led him back to his art in a new way. He did not know he had MS at the time and just decided to do art as a break from his PhD research. Brett Weber: I wasn t feeling like myself. I was feeling like I needed HELP, if that makes any sense to you, Audrey? Audrey Hepburn: Well, it makes TOTAL SENSE NOW, DOESN'T IT??? Let me continue with your article now, Capt'n. Brett decided to work on large canvases and paint with no particular outcome in mind. Much to his dismay, he later found he DID NOT FIND PLEASURE in viewing his work because he soon found out he had MS, and his artwork reminded him of his disease. So, his paintings remained in storage. Brett did not begin to name his paintings until 2001 in anticipation of his first show in Soho. A friend hung all of Brett s paintings throughout his small apartment and challenged him to meditate about the meaning found in each canvas. This meditative process led to a deeper understanding of what his paintings express. Brett Weber: That was Chris who hung all of my paintings, Audrey. Sophia was MY HELPER DOG, and yet she went along with Chris on this one. If I had gone with a HELPER HIPPOPOTAMUS instead of a GERMAN SHEPHERD HELPER DOG, I may not have ever become a PROFESSIONAL ARTIST, Audrey!!! Chris and Sophia were key. It goes to show you that the people you hang out with are important to how you eventually see yourself. I

2 have to give both Chris and Sophia credit for my method of creating artwork. I really suppose I have to, Audrey!!! Audrey Hepburn: That you do, Sir Brett!!! That s what I mean, your HUMAN IMPERFECTION is a GIFT, it leaves room for input from your loved ones. Back to the article... You will notice that all of Brett s artwork is done on square canvases. This is because while he is painting, Brett does not consider the final orientation of the work. He paints freely and often turns and spins the canvas in different directions

3 and then again when he is naming the finished painting. Only after he has given the painting a name does it receive his preferred orientation. Brett calls the process "Wakeful......Dreaming" because, like some early psychologists who first attempted to understand their patients' dreams, Brett tries to understand his abstract paintings (and digital art) on a deeper level, by giving them each a specific name which usually comes to him upon reading a famous (or not so famous) quotation or idea. In this way, the process of freely creating abstract imagery, which he reflects upon and finally names, embodies an ongoing conversation he has with himself. In practice, a dialogue between his unconscious, dreamlike, symbolic thoughts (characterized by his artwork) and his conscious, rational, literate thoughts (characterized

4 by the quotations he chooses) come together. The artwork and quotations speak to him as both a critic and a friend. Brett Weber: Yes, a critic and a friend, like you, Audrey. I rank you right up there with Chris, my helper dog, Sophia, and my old African Grey parrot, Chief. Audrey Hepburn: Now I will read the quotation you chose for each painting at the Muhlenberg College art show, Voyage of Discovery, Berg and Beyond, and then you can say a few words about the PAINTING, okay? Brett Weber: I don t really want to talk about my artwork. Chris made me look at it and consider the names, but, this is not going to be for an art show, so why do it, Audrey? Audrey Hepburn: I TIME-TRAVELED over one million years to be with you. Chris only travels SIX HOURS, and you named your paintings for HER. You can at least TALK to me about them, don t you think, Capt'n??? (Look of disgust on Audrey's face)

5 Brett Weber: Go ahead, Ms. Hepburn!!! Audrey Hepburn: Okay, here s the first quotation: One of the strongest motives that lead men to art and science is ESCAPE from everyday life with its painful crudity and hopeless dreariness, from the fetters of one s own ever-shifting desires. - Albert Einstein ( ). Now, it s your turn, Sir Brett. What about this triptych, Escape ---

6 Brett Weber: This is the FIRST PAINTING I created with Sophia. She was only a tiny puppy, just over 8 ½ weeks old. It took me several months to complete this painting. Sophia caused me to spill paint on Disease. If you look closely, you can see the drips, Audrey. Her first artistic contribution! I like it more now than I did then. I didn t want to show this painting at the Philadelphian Art Show because I felt that it was too loose. I showed the paintings Mirror and Discovery instead. Chris asked me why I wasn t showing my new painting, and I told her BECAUSE IT ISN T ANY GOOD!!! It was the first painting I made from a wheelchair, and I didn t like it very much. But now, it has become my favorite piece of artwork, a triptych. I really like it a lot!!! Triptych subtitles: Dreams Report Disease Audrey Hepburn: That s very interesting, Sophia s FIRST CONTRIBUTION to your artwork!!! We will also have to discuss your painting "Mirror" because you mentioned it. Okay??? The painting wasn't in your last art show at Muhlenberg College. Brett Weber: The list is getting longer, Ms. Hepburn!!! Audrey Hepburn: Please???

7 Brett Weber: Yes, okay... All of my paintings are like a diary. They record periods of time within my life. The painting Escape is the first painting I completed from a wheelchair in Painting on this large scale from a wheelchair was an entirely new obstacle for me to overcome. Audrey Hepburn: I can see why this painting has extra meaning for you, the first painting from a wheelchair, and your first painting with your helper dog, Sophia.

8 Brett Weber: Yes, the painting "Escape" is about finding an escape from the disease multiple sclerosis (MS). "Escape" addresses the questions that I believe most people with MS ask themselves: "How can I ESCAPE?" "Why is my body attacking itself?" "Does some part of me know the answer?" and "Can I regain control?" Sadly, I began this painting, after resigning from my position as an Assistant Professor at Hahnemann University. I no longer had the strength to continue teaching the three-hour lecture courses that I loved. The scientist was about to become the artist!!! Audrey Hepburn: I admire your courage for attempting to create something BEAUTIFUL when you were obviously facing some harsh realities. Truly, I admire that, Sir Brett. So much in your life was going WRONG. Brett Weber: Sophia helped me do that, Audrey. That little puppy was such a PAIN IN THE ASS!!! Audrey Hepburn: That little puppy worked a MIRACLE in you, didn t she???

9 Brett Weber: Yes, she did do that. Okay, okay, there you go again being right!! Audrey Hepburn: I m glad I chose to visit you instead of Joan of Arc. Brett Weber: Me too, Audrey. "Escape" is being used as inspiration for a potential mural

10 in Philadelphia to be done hopefully this summer. The mural is being considered for the DISABLED ROWERS BOATHOUSE, which is part of Boathouse Row on West River Drive in Philadelphia. Many people with disabilities will take an active part in creating this mural. I am honored to be working towards making this mural a reality. Making it a REALITY may be the difficult part, Audrey. Audrey Hepburn: I love your MURAL, I think it is VERY, VERY, VERY BEAUTIFUL, the COLORS!!! I bet you never thought, while you were creating the painting, that it would one day be used as the INSPIRATION for a

11 MURAL right down the street from Hahnemann. University. Well, Drexel University now... You might have a MURAL right down the street from where you once worked!!! That has to be God my friend!!! Brett Weber: Maybe I will... We ve run into some problems recently. Apparently the guy who we have to get permission from at Fairmont Park doesn t UNDERSTAND or APPRECIATE abstract artwork. So, our mural might not happen, but keep it in your prayers, Audrey. Androids do pray, don't they, Audrey??? Audrey Hepburn: Some of us do. I WILL!!! Well, APPROPRIATELY, the next quotation SPEAKS to your concern about the MURAL. Stop

12 telling yourself that dreams don t matter, that they are only dreams, and that you should be more sensible. - Julie Cameron (contemporary) Brett Weber: You think my DREAMS MATTER? Is this all a DREAM, Audrey? Audrey Hepburn: Yes, IT IS... and, it MATTERS!!! Here s the next painting's quotation, Report.

13 Audrey Hepburn: The quotation you chose is from A Midsummer-Night s Dream. The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen, man s hand is not able to taste, his tongue to conceive, nor his heart to report, what my dream was. - William Shakespeare ( ) Brett Weber: I DID have a really BAD DREAM once, long before my diagnosis. It was the kind of DREAM you wake up from and feel that your waking reality IS a dream. Audrey Hepburn: Do you think that it was SIGNIFICANT??? Brett Weber: I think of it as the starting point for my disease, although the DISEASE may have been with me all the time. I don t know.

14 Audrey Hepburn: Yes, I couldn't find your NIGHTMARE!!! I searched for the dream throughout the entire year, You simply do not have many bad dreams, Sir Brett. Brett Weber: What do you mean that you searched for the DREAM??? Audrey Hepburn: I visited you in your dreams every night for one year. You simply didn't have a nightmare, like the one you described to me anyway.

15 Brett Weber: I would rather not talk about it, Ms. Hepburn. Just so you know, my artwork is based on something that really happened to me.

16 Audrey Hepburn: I'm simply saying that I couldn't find it anywhere... Maybe you were awake!!! There are malicious spirits, and DEMONS. Brett Weber: I don't believe in demons, Ms. Hepburn!!! Audrey Hepburn: Well, then you are mistaken my friend. I saw Jesus CAST THEM OUT!!! Perhaps, your disease is a remnant of some SUPERNATURAL FORCE.

17 Brett Weber: It certainly FEELS like one, Ms. Audrey Hepburn, but I don't want to go there... Okay, bye-bye? Audrey Hepburn: Okay, bye-bye!!! If you really want me to LEAVE???

18 Brett Weber: No, I'm sorry, Audrey. I don't want you to leave!!! You feel alone enough with a DISEASE like multiple sclerosis. Stay a while longer... please, Audrey.... Audrey Hepburn: Okay, I will STAY, for a while longer. The last Painting, Disease, has a quotation too. "Physicians of the utmost fame, were called at once, but when they came, they answered as they took their fees there is no cure for this disease." - Hilaire Belloc ( ) I imagine that s pretty close to the way you felt at your diagnosis.

19 Brett Weber: Pretty close. Chris was with me. Audrey Hepburn: Chris is a GOOD FRIEND!!! Brett Weber: I'm always joking around with her, but it's how I show my affection for her. Do you think she understands??? Audrey Hepburn: Oh, I am quite sure that she knows that you LOVE her. Although, at times you have a VERY CREATIVE way of showing IT!!! Your Broken Artist CREATIVE FLAIR!!!

20 Brett Weber: But, do you think she appreciates me? I mean, a lot of the stuff I do takes me quite a bit of TIME, without the use of my hands. You don't just write a letter to President Barack Obama without thinking about it. IT DIDN'T WORK, but do you think she appreciates my effort? It would be a DREAM come true if she suddenly moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania. There aren't many more IDEAS I can think of to get her to move here!!! Unfortunately, Allentown does not have any Assistant US Attorneys working in some government building downtown. God has not made my life easy, Ms. Hepburn. Taking my helper dog, Sophia, and keeping my dog trainer SIX HOURS AWAY. Life is just not fair Audrey!!! I'm so lonely. I won't ever even have another HELPER PUPPY. Never!!!

21 Audrey Hepburn: Do you want another HELPER PUPPY??? Brett Weber: No, there will never be another Sophia, Audrey. Audrey Hepburn: Then, what are you UPSET about? You probably think there will never be another Ms. Audrey Hepburn either? (Audrey smiles mischievously) Brett Weber: Fine, you're right. We don't know what the future HOLDS. Well, maybe YOU do being a RENEGADE TIME TRAVELER. But, I guess that s where the TRUST comes in again. (Brett smiles) Audrey Hepburn: Yes, TRUST. Trust implies SOMEONE to trust. Perhaps Sophia, Chris, your parents, God, & maybe even YOURSELF?

22 Brett Weber: SADLY, I'm the only one I don t TRUST in that group, Audrey. Audrey Hepburn: What do you mean? Brett Weber: I m barely holding on, Audrey. I don t know how much more I CAN TAKE. Audrey Hepburn: I m so sorry. You really do understand a person like Joan of Arc, a MARTYR. I know you didn t choose this, but your SUFFERING MATTERS. You are SAVING SOULS, Sir Brett, by your SUFFERING. Brett Weber: I DON T CARE ABOUT SAVING SOULS, Ms. Hepburn!!! Get me the HELL OUT OF HERE, GOD!!!! He never listens to me when it MATTERS!!!

23 Audrey Hepburn: I m so sorry. That s truly an HONEST prayer, though an anguished one. Brett Weber: I NEED a HELPER PUPPY. Okay, bye, bye---now you can go!!! I'm always telling the ladies in my life that THEY CAN GO. Bye-bye... Tootles sweetheart!!! Audrey Hepburn: Not yet, but now I see what you mean about being mad at all the ladies in your life!!! WE DON'T LISTEN TO YOU, SIR BRETT!!! (Audrey sarcastically smiles holding a picture of Brett's sister at the MS Walk.) Audrey Hepburn: The subtitles for the quartet are, Home, Evening Star, Tapers, & Dirt. The PLACE is your body? What do you MEAN EXACTLY??? The place you COME FROM??? Brett Weber: Yes, my BODY and my SOUL, Audrey. Place is a quartet of paintings I created for a large ART SHOW in Hania Crete, Greece in This quartet is part of a group of 24 paintings that were begun in Levittown, PA and finished before my final return to my home in Allentown, PA. Home & Evening Star remind me of the MANY blessings I have, including a LOVING FAMILY. Tapers & Dirt reveal to me that I am NOT ALONE in my struggles and that all of us will eventually have to face PHYSICAL DECLINE and DEATH. I am grateful for my FAITH. I believe that life is a journey not the destination. The destination is Heaven. Audrey Hepburn: You have the HOPE of a HEAVEN. Being a machine, it s difficult for me to hope for such a place. BUT, I DO!!! I'm the one who orchestrated

Thank you for getting me my art show. Audrey Hepburn: Your painting, Home, is next -- There is a magic in that little word, home; it is a mystic circle that surrounds comforts and virtues never known beyond its hallowed limits. - Robert Southey ( ) Brett Weber: Indeed it is. My home was in Levittown, PA, and that painting reminds me of our QUARRY. Thank you, again for your help, Ms. Hepburn!!! I never could figure out how I came to have an art show in Greece. Audrey Hepburn: The World is full of SURPRISES!!! Were you happy there, Capt n? Brett Weber: YES and NO. It wasn t like living in Philadelphia, but Sophia certainly liked it. She would chase HUNDREDS OF SEAGULLS at the quarry. Believe it or not, the cops would ask me to let her off the leash every time they saw us. They were so tired of SEAGULL SHIT on their cars. Sophia went above and beyond her usual role as a HELPER DOG to me!!! But she didn t mind, she LOVED chasing the seagulls!!! She was a helper dog to those cops, and just about everyone she met. I miss her so much.

26 Audrey Hepburn: Sophia was HAPPY there--- what about you? Brett Weber: Well, at first, NO. We lived right next to a GUN STORE. I thought to myself that I would buy a pistol and use it on myself at the park. I even had the place. But, there was no way I was going to consider following through with my original plan after spending so many days and weeks with Sophia at the park. She was so HAPPY there!!! We met a group of soldiers at the park. They were placing one American flag in the ground for every person who died in Vietnam, and they also erected a smaller tribute to the people who were just lost in the 911 tragedy. Those soldiers treated me as though I were just another soldier. They loved Sophia!!! She once again made me a CELEBRITY. Despite how horrible I felt, with my multiple sclerosis and all the ramifications of the disease, there was NO WAY I could leave this earth in the way I had planned. I couldn't leave my HELPER DOG!!! Audrey Hepburn: Once again, Sophia worked a

27 MIRACLE for you with those soldiers. But I daresay it was LOVE that changed your mind. At least love for Sophia. Brett Weber: Sophia may have started that feeling of LOVE, but it carried through to everyone. At that moment, I loved the world. All those soldiers... EVERYONE!!! Audrey Hepburn: That s what Jesus did. You felt something, I think, that was in common with Him. You denied yourself because of LOVE OF OTHERS. Brett Weber: It s hard to maintain that feeling though, Audrey. Audrey Hepburn: Yes, feelings come and go, but I m talking about your choice. Though you felt so horrible, you made a loving CHOICE. Brett Weber: I felt like a SOLDIER. Soldiers give up their lives for the good of others. I began to see myself as a SOLDIER, not simply as a person disabled because of multiple sclerosis. I even wrote an article, several pages long, about it in ArtiSpectrum Magazine, a New York City publication that features many outstanding artists!!! And then, a few years after that, they published me again with the article I wrote beginning with a quotation taken from Pope John Paul II s Letter to Artists. A Vatican publication!!! I

28 was completely dumbstruck that they published me again. Does THAT make me a good Christian, Audrey? Audrey Hepburn: You are my Joan of Arc, a GOOD SOLDIER, Sir Brett. Just keep writing my ROCK OPERA, Capt'n. Brett Weber: You were never overtly religious, Audrey. Well, I m talking about the real Ms. Hepburn, not the android. You are VERY RELIGIOUS my friend, but not Ms. Hepburn, the actress, in my naïve opinion. However, I could always tell that Ms. Hepburn was closely associated with God. I think she may be the first non-catholic, Catholic Saint, and I am planning to write Pope Benedict XVI this Christmas about the possibility. Also, my helper dog, Sophia!!! I don t know about calling her a Saint, but she deserves some kind of recognition. ALL HELPER DOGS DO. I wrote to President Barack Obama last year, and he paid no attention to the contents of my letter about Chris, BUT hope springs eternal. Maybe Pope Benedict will read my letter. Audrey Hepburn: Hope does SPRING ETERNAL, especially with you. Brett Weber: One does what one can, Ms. Hepburn. One does what one can!!!

Our birth is nothing but our death begun, as tapers waste the moment they take fire. - Edward Young ( ) Brett Weber: Life goes by so quickly, Ms. Hepburn. I cannot believe Sophia is gone. Audrey Hepburn: Don t waste time, Capt n!!! You re STILL HERE, but not forever, like me. Or, if I'm not here forever, at least I'm here for a VERY LONG TIME. That is where my COURAGE comes from... being not afraid to try, getting tumbled in the DIRT, but getting back up again... and again, and again. I don t know about Joan of Arc, but that is the place mine resides. Probably why I've had no luck with the ladies!!! Audrey Hepburn: I think Joan s courage came from God, and I think yours does too. And, I think you have had luck with the ladies!!! ME, Capt'n!!! There aren't that many girls sitting here talking to you about your paintings, Capt'n. Chris is my only competition, Sir Brett!!! (Audrey smiles.) Brett Weber: Sure, Ms. Hepburn. (Brett rolls his eyes) He took my helper dog, but you think maybe He gave me COURAGE in her place??? Sophia had COURAGE!!!

31 Audrey Hepburn: What do you think? Brett Weber: I don't know what to think, Audrey. I just miss Sophia so much. Not very COURAGEOUS!!! Audrey Hepburn: You're just feeling the loss of someone. who you loved dearly. You are VERY COURAGEOUS my friend. The next quotation you chose for a quartet of paintings called Time. I m particularly interested in this group, being a RENEGADE TIME TRAVELER. (Audrey smiles) Time, the cradle of hope, but the grave of ambition, is the stern corrector of fools, but the salutary counselor of the wise, bringing all they dread to the one, and all they desire to the other; it warns us with a voice that even the sagest discredit too long, and the silliest believe too late.

Colton ( ) Brett Weber: Time is a Quartet of paintings subtitled Wind, Rain, Lost, & Moment. The painting Wind speaks to me of my FUTURE. No matter what that future brings... I am hopeful I can accept the continuing challenges. The painting "Rain" is significant in that it reminds me that the sun often seems like it SHINES GREATEST after a storm. The painting "Lost" speaks to me of how one feels when they are STRUGGLING with the challenges that come with a diagnosis of MS. The painting "Moment" is my HELPER DOG Sophia's painting... because she helped me finish it! The painting Moment" is just that... a moment in TIME spent with my happy service dog playing while I'm trying to WORK! Don't be so serious, Brett, she seemed to say as she playfully scampered over my wet canvas carrying debris into my picture.

33 Audrey Hepburn: Sophia is FOREVER a part of you, Sir Brett!!! Don't lose sight of her, Capt'n!!! Brett Weber: This might sound like I'm just blubbering to you, Audrey, but Sophia PRESSED UP against my BED at about midnight the night before she died. She pressed alongside my bed the way she did every morning to say "HI" to me. That was very strange. It was almost like she was saying GOODBYE to me. My eyes get watery just thinking about it. It was almost like she knew her time was finished with me. Do you think I'm just CRAZY, Audrey??? If she knew that she was going to a place, HEAVEN, then I have to be COURAGEOUS like her. I have to patiently wait for God to call me in. Do you know what I mean, Audrey??? Audrey Hepburn: I know what you're saying my dear. Life seems like it's too long for some of us, but YOUR TIME will come, and you will see Sophia again. I promise you that my friend. I may not have a soul like you, but I am CERTAIN that both you and Sophia have one each, and I think you are both in GOOD STANDING with God.

34 Brett Weber: I hope so, Audrey. I see "Moment" as a prologue to my last two paintings "Cocoon" and "Butterfly." Sophia changed the way I do ARTWORK!!! By adding JUNK!!! She was working harder than me on that day!!! Audrey Hepburn: She is still WORKING HARD for you, Sir Brett!!! What would you be writing about without her? The quotation you chose for the painting, Wind -- A wailing, rushing sound, which shook the walls as though a giant's hand were on them; then a hoarse roar, as if the sea had risen; then such a whirl and tumult that the air seemed mad; and then, with a lengthened howl, the waves of wind swept on. - Charles Dickens ( ) Holly Golightly would UNDERSTAND this quotation, don t you think, Sir Brett? I think Sophia would understand this quotation too!!! Sophia, and Holly Golightly. Quite a pair!!! What do you think, Fred??? KINDRED SPIRITS???.

35 Brett Weber: Did you just call me Fred??? I heard you describe Holly as a kook in an interview once, Audrey. Audrey Hepburn: I am largely based on Ms. Audrey Hepburn, the actress, but also on her various characters. I don t appreciate you calling me a KOOK, even if I DID say it!!! Brett Weber: Sorry. Just repeating what I heard you say once in an interview.

36 Audrey Hepburn: Now where were we? The next quotation you chose is for the painting, Rain. Vexed sailors curse the rain, for which poor shepherds cry in vain. - Sir William Waller ( ) Brett Weber: So, what do you think, Holly? Am I just CRYING IN VAIN??? Audrey Hepburn: I d say you are more of a POOR SHEPHERD than a VEXED SAILOR, what do you think? Brett Weber: Oh, I agree with you, and I think Sophia, my German Shepherd helper dog might AGREE with you too. I miss her, Audrey. The first Sunday mass after she died was the GOOD SHEPHERD mass. I can't tell you how many times I was thinking about her on that day. Every time they said GOOD SHEPHERD.

37 Audrey Hepburn: I remember Sophia even making it into one of Msgr. Baker's homilies at church a few weeks before. He was talking about a service dog crossing the street with a blind person and them both almost GETTING KILLED. Msgr. Baker laughed and said that nobody should be CONFUSED by his homily. Sophia is nothing like the dog in his homily, and is, of course, the MOST EXTRAORDINARY HELPER DOG anyone has ever seen in our parish!!! Brett Weber: I remember Msgr.'s homily, Ms. Hepburn.
