Personnel Needed: 2 Games Hosts dressed either in festive wear or festive colours. 2. Materials/Logistics Needed: Strips of paper, 7 colours (GKidz will provide. To be collected at the end of the game to pass to the next service.) Tap on Wifi for laptop to play online game Kahoot! One set of cards for Match the Words (GKidz will provide) 3 sets of colourful Tangram templates and 3 sets of Tangram patterns (GKidz will provide) Group prizes (GKidz will provide) Script Host 1: Hi everyone! Today we are going to play 4 games together! They are Steamboat Reunion, CNY Trivia, Match the Words and Tangram Puzzle! There are prizes to be won for 3 of the games. But before we start today s programme, I would like to wish everyone 新 年快乐! 1

2 Host 2: 万事如意! Host 1: This is like our family time together at GKidz since CNY started. It s REUNION TIME! At reunion dinner, many of us have steamboat. So let s play a STEAMBOAT GAME to start the ball rolling. Each group will be the different ingredients for the Steamboat. (Host 1 to tell which group to represent which ingredient and then leaders will give them a strip of coloured paper accordingly to the colours listed below. The strips are to be collected at the end of the game to pass to the next service.) 1. cabbage (green) 2. fishball (white) 3. chicken (light yellow) 4. prawns (pink) 5. meatballs (grey) 6. mushrooms (yellow) 7. fa-choy (purple) 8. sea cucumber (blue) Host 1: So, for a start, everyone is to stand in a circle with those having the same ingredients. When the games host who is going to be the steamboat maker calls the different ingredients e.g. If he/she calls cabbage, all the children in the cabbage group must switch positions. If he/she calls mushrooms, all the mushrooms must change places. If he/she calls out Steamboat, everyone must change places and form new circles where each circle MUST have a mixture of all the 8 ingredients. Host 2: That s easy! I will be the steamboat maker. (Host 2 to call names of different ingredients.) (Play Steamboat Reunion for 5 to 10 minutes and have everyone go back to their regular rows.) Host 1: That s great fun having reunion with all of you. We usually have reunion dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year. Have you had yours? Host 2: Of course I did! This is already the 8 th /9 th day of the Chinese New Year season. Host 1: I believe you have already visited relatives and friends, wishing one another well wishes, and receiving ang baos! Who has collected more than $100 worth of ang bao blessings? $200? $300? Wow! Host 2: I have collected!!! Host 1: Well, while we are happy with your ang bao collection, have you ever wondered what CNY is really all about? Is it about receiving many ang baos? Is it to have a prosperous New Year? Or is it to have health and longevity and 学业进步? 2

3 Host 2: I actually do know quite a bit about Chinese New Year! Maybe some of the children are quite well informed about this too! Host 1: Really?! Then you all must be ready for the first game for today CNY Trivia! All you need to do is to have your leader ready with their phones to log into this game to represent your team, then you are ready to roll to answer all the questions. Host 2: WAIT! Are there any prizes to be won? Host 1: Yes, there will be a little prize for the group that has the highest points. Here we go! (Every group should have one leader to log into Kahoot - / to play the game. Host 1 facilitates the game.) 1. Host 2: I am glad we are getting some facts right about Chinese New Year! There is one more fact that many people should know too that our God, the Creator is also a God of the Chinese, like you and I. Some people have wrongly made claims that say that Jesus is a God for the white skin people like the Americans or the Jews, and not for the Chinese! This claim is not true. God loves everyone, whichever culture we come from or whichever skin colour we have. Jesus died for everyone s sins, and that includes that Chinese. He loves us very much! Host 1: Oh that I agree! I heard from a Professor who lectures in China. He found out that the experts who studied ancient Chinese characters had discovered that the God that the Chinese worshipped, which they called heavenly God or 皇天在上 is likely the same God that the Jews worshipped, which is God that we know in our Bible!! Host 2: Chinese Ancient Characters? I can t read any of them! Host 1: That s the fun part! Each character is like drawing of what we see with our eyes. How about we play a game with these characters now MATCH THE WORDS. Each group will be given a set of the ancient characters and also a set of modern Chinese characters. As a group, match the ancient with the modern one. I will show you one as an example. (Show slide.) 4

5 Host 1: In ancient times, every home will have domestic animals like pigs, ducks, chicken, cows, and many more. So the ancient word was actually a drawing of a roof with an animal beneath it. Then, it slowly evolved to the modern word that we write today! Host 2: Wow! This is so interesting! I am ready to go for it! So for this round, the group that gets the most number of right answers will be the winner for this game as well! (Leader to make sure every group gets a set of words before the game starts.) Host 1: Is everyone ready? 3,2,1! Start matching now! (Give 2 minutes to play the game. Play the 1 min countdown timer for the last minute. Then, show the children the answers using the slides. Each right answer gets 5 points. Have the leaders indicate the score for each group. ) Host 2: Yes! We have a winner! (Give out prizes to the winning group.) Host 1: Next up, here's some puzzling fun for the kids from ancient China! Tangrams, also known as "seven pieces of cleverness", is an ancient Chinese puzzle which is still mind-bending and intriguing today! Every group will be given 3 Tangram Puzzles to solve. (Show slides.) Your job is to ensure that all the colour pieces can be used to form the various shapes that are given to you in 3 minutes. Ready, get set go! (Give 3 minutes to play the game. Play the 1 min countdown after for the last minute. Hosts to go around the room and give some commentaries as the groups solve the puzzles. ) Host 2: Time s up! Let s look at the answers! (After 3 minutes, show the children the answers using the slides. Each right answer gets 5 points. Have the leaders indicate the score for each group. Give out prizes to the winning group.) ) Host 1: Was it difficult to solve the puzzles? Host 2: Yes a little difficult. But, with perseverance, I am so glad that so many groups solved the puzzles! Actually, I always find Chinese characters very puzzling, I can t use phonics to 5

6 put together how the word sounds like, like what I do in English But now I am getting interested with Chinese characters and the Chinese culture! Host 1: That s good! Let me wow you with another interesting discovery about the Chinese character 福. It tells us about God s blessings. Host 2: Is it about being rich or being happy? Well, everyone wants to be richer and richer. It is never enough for many. Everyone seeks to be happy too! Host 1: So, at the end of all the festivity, we must finally ask ourselves if we are truly happy? True happiness and blessedness is a supreme joy given by God as prescribed in the Chinese character 福. It is a joy that is independent of one s situation, it s a joy that comes about because we have peace with God. The Chinese Character means BLESSED. If we dissect the word into three parts, this is what it means. a. The left hand side means GOD b. The one stroke and the mouth on the top means ONE MAN c. The bottom one means IN A GARDEN In the beginning of Creation, God wants to give the one man joy and happiness. But that one man disobeyed God and was chased out of the garden, and he was forever separated from God. Disobedience caused sin to enter his life. Sin destroyed his life. Since then, the one man had to work hard on the ground in order to make a living. But because God loves man so much he decided to send another man, His son to save all men from sin that destroys. That man is called JESUS. If we believe that Jesus came to save all men, then we will truly be blessed. I bless all of you who are here, that you will receive this greatest 福气 that comes from God! Host 2: Woohoo! Thank you so much! I think some of us here really want to receive this greatest 福气 that comes from God, how can we receive that? Host 1: You can repeat this prayer line by line after me. Can I have everyone to be close your eyes, with a grateful heart, if you want to receive this blessing, say this prayer with me: Dear God, I believe that You are the Creator of Heaven and Earth and everything that is in it. You created me and I belong to You. I want to receive the greatest blessing of living my life with You as my God. I believe that You have sent Your Son, Jesus, into this world to save me from sin, so that I will no longer be separated from You. Help to receive this revelation of Your truth. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen! (By leading the children in this prayer, we give a chance to the pre-believers to receive Jesus and our own children to re-dedicate their lives to God. Please do BTB with the nonbelievers after the Loh Hei.) Host 2: Woohoo!! That s the greatest blessing that we can ever receive for our own lives! 6

7 Host 1: Yeah! And, we can t celebrate Chinese New Year without food! It s time to break into our small groups for some makan time. Have a good loh hei time together! A. Loh Hei Time Materials Needed: Snacks (Leaders and children to bring) Table Mat, chopsticks, small plate (GKidz will provide) Leaders to encourage children to bring small portions of CNY goodies to share with their group. You can do Loh Hei with the group with the snacks. Encourage the children to declare God s promises as they celebrate or loh together.
