1 THE PACHAMAMA ALLIANCE PACHAMAMA OF GREATER ROCHESTER June 2016 Newsletter "Building a critical mass of committed global citizens to create a human presence on the planet that is environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just. OPENING SACRED SPACE You don t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step Martin Luther King We are not faced with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the underprivileged, and at the same time, protecting nature. Pope Francis Therefore, hear the cry of the earth, hear the cry of the poor ( Wealth depends on how you measure it. According to our indigenous partners, "wealth" is in ancestral, spiritual & cultural knowledge, not in material objects. ( What do these words have in common: Environmental Sustainability, Social Justice, Spiritual Fulfillment? Of course! And, the Internet Or, how the modern world connects. How we share our fears, our knowledge, our grief, our joy, our efforts and ideas, our meaning. Spending time on Facebook is not idle time, If it is spent building knowledge and connection. A person from the other side of the planet Can be the one who leads us to new vision. Let that sense of connection sink in. Let the power of that connection inform and move you To action And Love

2 May 22, 2016 The call to activists was answered! Sue Staropoli captured the mood of the day: My heart is full as I reflect on the deep connection, learning and growing together we experienced. Leadership is most often a word we associate with someone up front who leads others in a direction. Jason Bayless and Rogér Knoren from the Pachamama Alliance opened my eyes to the many forms leadership can take and how I have a choice in how I will be a leader in every situation (beyond my usual default patterns). These new concepts ( coactive leadership ) were the cornerstone of the skills we learned. So many people, after learning this model of leadership, spoke of how helpful this will be in their organizations and personal life. It was freeing and powerful for us to grow together (as a core team and a local community of activists) as we learned together, and brainstormed (with another deep listening tool) how we can stay connected and work more collaboratively. Changing the world is UP TO US, and can only come within community. What a weekend of community-building at many levels! I am so moved and grateful for this gift that will enrich my life as a member of our Pachamama community, within our local community of activists, as a global citizen, and in my personal life. Take the First Step: Come to the Pachamama Rochester Core Meeting and continue the conversation! Pachamama Rochester Pachamama Core Team Meeting Wednesday June 8, 2016: Place: Sue Staropoli s home: 506 Panorama Trail, Rochester, NY 14625; Schedule: 5:30pm pot luck; 6:30 group sharing; 7-8:30 Meeting. Connect with us on Facebook: (for best results copy the link to your browser) Creating A More Just Sustainable And Fulfilling Community And World: The focus of the Rochester Pachamama Alliance is to work in partnership with others to create a more just, sustainable and fulfilling community and world. The course offers powerful ideas, wonderful people, and transformative practices. At this momentous time in human history we must discover who we need to be and what we need to do. GCI will help as you join this growing community taking a stand for change. You will find your own participation with the course inspiring, challenging, educational and deeply rewarding. For an overview of GCI see: From The Pachamama Alliance Leadership Updates from Ecuador: Last month after the devastating earthquake in Ecuador, Pachamama Alliance, launched an Ecuador Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund to support on-the-ground relief efforts. Thanks to the support of hundreds of generous donors, we have raised over $52,000! Those funds are being put to use supplying essential goods like water, food, and clothing. Contributions have made possible: construction of over 300 temporary houses; purchase of 500 water filters; establishing systems of public safety in a number of communities to assist vulnerable populations in times of chaos; support to approximately 500 people suffering from psychological trauma; construction of

4 20 dry latrines and composting systems; training for over 200 women in how to set up emergency local food production systems while the country rebuilds; training for over 200 men in bamboo construction to build temporary housing. Fox went to 12 countries on six continents documenting communities struggles with climate change, including a group of Pacific Climate Warriors chant[ing], "We are not drowning, we are fighting." When Josh becomes depressed about the lack of progress in turning back global warming, he travels around the world to find himself re-inspired by the activists that he confronts. He concludes that the most important aspects of our work is courage, human rights, democracy, innovation, creativity, resilience and love.
