H ow significant a small dot of black ink can be? Well, pretty much, if it happens to be planted on your left index finger as an acknowledgement of your participation in a mammoth exercise conducted in a democratic behemoth. As elections for five state assemblies just got concluded, one can t help wonder at a success story worth revisiting a little. It provides such a sense of pride & a feeling of being treated as a true citizen each time we are asked to choose our representatives. And now, we can even express our rejection of all the choices provided. It s such a potent tool to have & we should be thankful to our nation s founding members who decided to hand over this decisive weapon of universal adult franchise to any & every Indian aged over 21, irrespective of wealth, education, gender or caste. Contrast this with other older & supposedly advanced democracies like France, UK & USA, which expanded the electorate in stages & took years to deem their women worthy of voting rights & that too after a long, arduous struggle. But India, barely in its infancy as a modern, independent nation decided otherwise. The move drew sarcastic sneers & predictions of utter failure with many within the country dismissing it as the biggest gamble in history. That the gamble paid off & handsomely so, is now a historical fact but it is also equally true that we have let the architect of the whole exercise remain an unsung hero. It was Sukumar Sen, who as India s first Chief Election Commissioner, designed & orchestrated this stupendous task of recording the opinion of 176 million people (of whom more than 85% lacked even elementary education) across 4500 seats for general as well as state assembly elections. It might have helped that apart from being a civil servant, who rose to the highest position of Chief Secretary, he was also a Mathematician, with a gold medal from University of London, no less. It was he who had devised the system of identifying parties by different symbols & colours. He also struck out about three lakh women from the electoral rolls, who refused to give their own names, registering instead as someone s mother or wife a decision which went on to become a cornerstone for gender equality in our country, as this forced these women to have their own separate identity. His success was recognised internationally, when a year later he was asked to organise the first elections in the newly independent country of Sudan. He stayed there for nine months setting up the election machinery & ensuring its successful implementation. In a stirring tribute, the leading Egyptian newspaper hailed him as one of those men who were born to lead the pitched battles for Democracy. Ironically Sudan would not hold another election in decades to come, as it soon plunged into armed conflict and military 3

dictatorship. But India did, five years later & Sen was at the helm yet again, diligently replicating the debut success leaving an indelible mark on India s quest to establish its democratic credentials to the world. The second election in 1957, India Today report reveals, cost India `45million less because the prudent Sen had safely stored the 3.5million ballot boxes used the first time round. An act, out of the ordinary in today s light, when skeletons of scams worth several times that amount of taxpayers money tumble out of the cupboards of politicians & bureaucrats alike at pretty regular intervals. And the sad part is that we have got accustomed to it. We simply shrug & smugly say Politics is the last refuge of the scoundrels...don t you know? But God knows how to brand the people who are knowingly ready to be governed by such scoundrels & worse, criminals. Last month, we celebrated with usual fanfare the 155 th birth anniversary of a poet we idolise, but hardly read nowadays & scarcely follow. But in this time & age when the distinctive line between right & wrong is getting increasingly blurred, it might be wise or rather necessary to truly imbibe a couple of his oft-recited lines: Onnyay je kore ar onnyay je shohe, tobo ghrina jeno tare trinosomo dohe (May your divine ire burn those that do wrong and also those that suffer injustice in silence) Yes, it s time to look at that black mark on our finger with a lot more respect & a true sense of purpose which must not be defeated. Ever. 7 June, 21st was recognized as International Yoga Day by the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) on 11 th December, Since the fact that this is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere (the Summer Solstice) had a bearing upon selection of 21st June for this novel and eclectic purpose, MTPS decided to spread the word a month ahead in anticipation of achieving a better physical, mental and social life. In view of the same, a five day free Yoga Shivir was arranged from May 28th at the Recreation Club, MTPS Staff Colony that was open to everyone. Interestingly, the attendance escalated each day, making it a smashing success and proving once again that holistic health has gone viral as a lifestyle improvement technique in recent years, thanks to free exchange of information and globalization that has bridged the gap between prachya and paschatya school of thoughts. The camp garnered widespread response under the tutelage of instructors registered with the Patanjali Yogapeeth, Haridwar, who finished off the five day camp with a Yagna (they say Yoga and Yagna are two sides of a coin). The sacrificial fire is a symbol of subtraction of every negativity associated with one s lower self, facilitating the emergence of the higher self in the process. Overall, the various Pranayamas, the free-hand exercises and lots of satsang have given MTPS the required adrenaline and endorphin rush and taken us one step closer to perfection and formation of a core lifestyle group, who would assist anyone interested in their endeavour. 6

IN CONVERSATION WITH KANKANA MAJI, D/O MR DILIP MAJI, A/C, E/O, MTPS 7

Kankana, congrats on your brilliant success in your Plus Two & JEE exams. As we know, you were the topper from DAV, MTPS last year & are also recipient of NTSE & KVPY scholarships. Well, any particular reason for choosing JU & Computer Science? I had a liking for computer science, especially programming since my high school days. So I wanted to study CSE and I chose Jadavpur University because its CSE department is well renowned & is among the top 5 institutes for CSE in India. How was your schooling instrumental in shaping up your academic progression? I had studied in Carmel Convent High School, Durgapur since fifth standard. The school has helped me a lot, especially the teachers who played a vivid role in improving my academics. They were very experienced, dedicated & had great depth in their respective subjects; they cleared all our doubts and helped us in every possible way. I was mostly influenced by Mrs. Debroy, who used to take our Chemistry classes, and Sarbani Miss, our Geography teacher. They had been ideals for me throughout my school days. Another thing worth mentioning is that, the teachers were strict about the academics of the students, but they paid equal attention towards discipline, punctuality and cleanliness. Also, it was mandatory for all, even Nursery KG kids, to speak in English. It makes students well well versed in English, which is a significant plus point in today s trend of education. Also I feel the ICSE curriculum is very apt for building a good foundation & clear concepts You shifted to DAV, MTPS after secondary. Were there any noticeable differences or would you suggest anything to improve the academic performance of the lone school in our campus? Self study is one of the key factors to succeed in the Plus Two & the competitive exams. So I think there should be less restriction regarding school attendance & more stress should be on discipline & academics of the students. A teacher you would love to gift something on Teachers Day? I would like to gift something to my mother on Teachers Day. she has been the first teacher in my life; she had taught me to speak, to walk & through all these years she has taught me to be a good human being. So for me my mother is the best teacher in the world. Would you like to mention about someone from our colony whose guidance helped you a lot? My reverent teacher Mr Gopal Chandra Sen had helped me a lot to strengthen my concepts in Maths & Science during my high school days. I am also indebted to Mr T.K.Pal, Mrs Arpita 8

Bose, Mr P.S.M.Bhattachrya & Mr Sutirtha Chatterjee for their guidance. Well.. Let s move away from the academics a bit. Do you believe that gender bias still exists in our society? Have you experienced it any sphere? Gender bias does exist in our country, even in today s modernised society. Parents are often seen to be overprotective about their girl child & social evils like dowry system, female foeticide still exist, not only in rural areas but in urban & suburban areas as well. Fortunately I haven t experienced gender bias as such but I have come across people who themselves are well educated but do not hold a high opinion about giving higher education to a girl child. I strongly criticize the way JU is being humiliatingly portrayed by media & people who spread rumours about such an esteemed college without knowing the ground reality there. To speak about JU in general, the professors are very good and cooperative. As for the seniors, I d never imagined to get seniors like them. They re very helpful & supportive & what s worth mentioning is that there s absolutely NO RAGGING in the campus. The freedom that even we, the juniors enjoy, I think, is unimaginable in most other colleges. JU has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. What s the ground reality out there? JU has been brought into the limelight for wrong reasons. Events are being hyped by the media. We have a conducive atmosphere for education & there s no turmoil, especially in the Engineering departments. And the prejudice that there is only politics in JU is absolutely untrue. It s very sad that recently, the political parties, the media & some outsiders are exploiting a handful of students and tarnishing the image of the college. A large body of students & professors rather try their best to safeguard the college and facilitate the smooth running of the academic system. Your take on the anti-nationalism debate... In my opinion protesting against government activities can t be called anti-nationalism & I feel the JU students justly protested against the arrest of the JNU students charged with sedition. The only folly on the part of the JNU students was calling 9

Afzal Guru a martyr. Martyrs are the ones who laid down their lives protecting the Parliament. Any personality whose life & deeds have inspired you? I am inspired a lot by Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. He had lived a very prosaic life & had proved his patriotism, not through loud slogans but through his sincere work & achievements. The best thing I have learnt from him is simple living high thinking & I try my best to follow it. -werment in India My mother, Mrs Pritika Maji. She is a school teacher in Gandhi Memorial Girls School, Ranigunj. Despite being a working lady, the way she maintains the household & has brought up me & my sister with the best possible facilities & opportunities, I think she is the best embodiment of women empowerment in India. Movies, music or books what is your favourite stress buster? Books. I like to read a lot, be it story books, non-fiction or my academic books. Speaking about my choice of books...i prefer Bengali books to English ones. Purbo Poschim, Prothom Alo & the Kakababu series by Sunil Gangopadhyay; the Feluda series by Satyajit Ray; Prothom Protisruti, Subornolota & Bokulkotha by Ashapurna Debi; short stories by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay & novels by Bankim Chandra are some of my favourites. Among English ones...the Shiva Trilogy by Amish Tripathi; The Kite Runner & The Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseni & The Namesake by Arundhati Roy are some of the books I'd love reading over and over again...i also like the inspirational books by Paulo Coelho and Richard Bach, among which The Alchemist & Jonathan Livingston Seagull are my favourites. Name someone who according to you personifies women empo- What would be your advice to anyone sitting for his/her Class XII exams? My only advice is...work hard & don t lose hope. There is no shortcut to success. Only sincerity & diligence can pave the 10

way to success. Do you follow any sports? Any particular sportsperson you like or are a die-hard fan of? I follow badminton, chess & to some extent cricket. I m a fan of Saina Nehwal. Apart from being a wonderful badminton player she has a brown belt in Karate as well. She hails from a middle class family, but her hard work & steely determination has led her to the pinnacle of success & that s what inspires me a lot. I think the quota system based on caste should be abolished. Reservation should be provided only to the economically backward ones & the physically challenged ones. Reservation on basis of caste is nothing but undue privilege. There was a time when the lower caste people were really downtrodden & they actually needed special facilities to cope up with the general caste people. It was definitely a very just measure to uplift them to the mainstream. But the constitution had mentioned that it was to be done away with after 10 years & a long time has passed even after those 10 years & now the boon itself has turned into a social menace. The rich merchant s son is enjoying the privilege that the poor farmer s son should have got, under the cover of caste based reservation system. The government is rather increasing the caste based quota day by day. This is in fact a major source of brain drain, as the deserving candidates are not getting scope & migrating to foreign countries. So, the government should abolish this injustice at the earliest, in order to establish no discrimination & equality for all by the true sense of the phrase. Finally that oft-repeated last question - where would you like to see yourself five years down the line? After completing my B.Tech I wish to pursue M.Tech from IIT Bombay & then research in the field of Artifical Intelligence. Any social reforms you would have liked to bring about... Thanks for such a candid chat & wish you all the success.. 11

Hearty congratulations to TEAM M/O as well as all the concerned employees for making us proud & our best wishes to them for equalling more such precedents within & outside DVC & setting up of new ones. 366 That is the number of employees from MTPS who served Election duty in the recently held assembly elections of West Bengal. Out of them, 319 were Gr-D staff who were appointed as 3 rd Polling Officers & 30 were Gr-B staff who served as Micro-observers. Apart from this, 17 Gr-B employees were assigned the role of Micro-observers in Counting of Votes. 12

The diary of a Polling official As soon as the dates for the assembly elections got announced on 4th March we had started discussing among ourselves that very soon the call for Election Duty would come. When the list eventually arrived I rushed to our Administrative Office but my name wasn t there. A second list was released on 24th March which had my name in it & I was given my training schedules. My first training was on 29 th March at Saradamoni Girls College, Bankura. There we were shown a one hour video instructing how to inspect the polling area on election eve to ensure that no political banners, posters, flags etc are visible within its 100m radius. It also showed a school premise indicating the best suitable place to hold the voting as well as the seating arrangement of the Presiding officer, the other Polling officials & the Poling agents of different parties. Then there were the details of the EVM or the Electronic Voting Machine: it is powered by a 6V battery & consists of two Units a Control Unit & a Balloting Unit, joined by a five-meter cable. The Control Unit is with a Polling Officer & the Balloting Unit is placed inside the voting compartment. The voter can cast his vote by pressing the blue button on the Balloting Unit only after the Ballot button is pressed in the Control unit. We were also informed about the VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) which was going to be used for the first time in WB, though we weren t shown it that day. Our second training was scheduled the next day at the same time but at a different venue Mission Girls School, Bankura. My letter contained my polling party number which was 144 & the name & designation of its members. So after reaching there I searched for my team & having located them got ourselves introduced & exchanged mobile numbers. The training mainly centred around the VVPAT which was demonstrated to us & we got to know firsthand how to connect it to the EVM. It is basically a vote printout which shows the voter his/her vote after it has been cast. P-1 DAY: As directed, I arrived within 8 o clock at Bankura Christian College which was our DC or Distribution Centre. There I got to know my Polling Station from the Decoding List & then contacted my fellow members. We then went to our Sector Officer, got our mobile numbers registered & stood in a queue for collecting the polling materials from our designated counter. After receiving the materials we switched ON the EVM in order to see whether its Battery was showing HIGH, but to our dismay it gave us a blank display. We hurriedly took it to the EVM cell where they replaced the Battery. All this took up a couple of hours & it was time to board the bus which would take us to our polling station. Apart from us there were four more teams who were to avail that bus & it took another one & a half hours for everyone to assemble there & get on board. One by one the teams got off until the last two teams were left, when the 13

driver declared that he can t go further as the road ahead was way too narrow. Our destination was still more than a couple of kilometres from there & we couldn t even catch our Sector Officers by phone. We were contemplating sending a SMS to the Delhi EC Office when suddenly a Police Van arrived at the scene. On being briefed about the matter they ferried us to our polling stations. It was a nicely maintained primary school surrounded by a boundary wall & we all were pleased with the facilities. After having some light snacks which we had brought with us we got along with our work of setting up the polling machinery. The cameraman among us, with the assistance of a special team, put up the Offline camera for video recording of the Vote Booth to capture any malpractice or rigging. It became well past midnight before we could go to bed & I could hardly sleep. P-DAY: We had to get up very early at around 4 o clock & be ready as the Polling Agents started arriving from 6AM. We had to show them that no votes had been recorded at the EVM before conducting the Mock Poll where the Agents were asked to cast votes notching up a total of minimum 50. Then the CLOSE, RESULT & CLEAR buttons were pressed successively to end the mock poll, show its results & delete the mock votes from the EVM respectively. The Control Unit was then switched off, EVM was sealed & the VVPAT print outs of the mock votes were taken out, stamped as MOCK POLL SLIP & sealed off in the specified envelope.so we were all set & voting ensued sharp at 7 o clock. My duty as 3 rd Polling Officer was to direct the voter to the booth after checking the Voting Ink applied & collecting the Voter slip issued by the 2 nd Polling Officer, who also had to maintain the Register of Voter (Form 17A). The 1 st Polling Officer was in charge of the Marked Copy of Electoral Roll. He would check voter s identity, call out his/her name & serial number aloud & maintain a Tally sheet. The presence of an additional 2 nd Polling Officer for VVPAT eased our jobs a bit. The Presiding Officer was in overall charge & had to look after maintenance of law & order & send the Vote count every 2 hrs by SMS. After the last voter had cast his franchise we got on with the postpoll formalities & when finally things were wrapped up at around 8:30PM we were all dead tired & wished we could sleep off then & there. But that was not to be as we had to haul all the materials on the Police Van which took us to the waiting bus & off we headed back towards our DC which now served as the RC (Returning Centre). There we had to wait in the queue & only after they meticulously checked each & everything & found them in order, that we were free to go. It was well past midnight when I finally entered my home, exhausted but relieved to have successfully completed my election duty for the fourth time. 17 ECH-TALK A. SF6 GAS ANALYSIS & RECOVERY FOR HV/EHV BREAKERS AT CTPS: WIKA SF6 Q ANALYSER WIKA SF6 GFU 10 GAS RECOVERY UNIT 16

17 In HV and EHV Circuit Breakers SF6 is the choice of interrupting media. All SF6 breakdown or arc products are toxic. Normal circuit breaker operation produces small quantities of arc products during current interruption which normally recombine to SF6. With energy input during equipment operation, and in presence of even trace amounts of Oxygen and Moisture, the otherwise stable SF6 gas decomposes into reactive and corrosive products such as SF4, SO2, HF and other compounds. The products of this reaction are corrosive in nature and attack the electrode material of the circuit breaker contacts, thereby decreasing the life of the breakers. The figure below illustrates the decomposition scheme of SF6 Over a period of time, due to increased presence of impurities, the SF6 begins to lose its dielectric strength. As per a recent paper released by ERPC (Eastern Regional Power Committee), 16% Circuit Breaker failures are due to the failure of the dielectric media. So it is of utmost importance to routinely analyze the SF6 in the circuit breakers. As per the guidelines given in IEC 60480, the analysis should target the finding of the following three parameters Dew Point (Moisture content), % Purity and SO2 content. The decision to go for the analysis of SF6 gas in circuit breaker interrupters can be influenced by the following factors Number of Years of Service For circuit breakers that have been in service for more than 5-10 years, SF6 analysis is a must. Aberrations detected by DCRM test If during routine maintenance, changes are reported in the DCRM (Dynamic Contact Resistance Measurement) signature of the circuit breaker, SF6 analysis is recommended as a next step along with the inspection of circuit breaker contacts. Possibly there has been corrosion in the circuit breaker electrodes due to acidic contaminants in the gas which were accumulated due to breakdown of gas. Leakage in Circuit breaker Any leakage is an interface of gas/air. This could be a source for moisture to be adsorbed by SF6. After attending the leakage, SF6 needs to be analyzed to

detect any contaminants. After overhauling of Circuit breaker If there has been an overhauling of the circuit breaker, wherein the gas was evacuated and contacts were inspected. After re-filling gas in the breaker, analysis needs to be done to detect any possible ingress of moisture and contamination of SF6. Now a days, SF6 analyzers are commercially available and are being used by leading organizations in the Power Sector today. Based on the results obtained after analysis, decision for recovery of gas can be made. SF6 RECOVERY & RECYCLING: As stated above, over a period of time, or due to other factors, impurities begin to accumulate in the SF6 gas inside circuit breaker interrupters. After detection of impurities, replacement or recovery action of the gas needs to be undertaken. Traditionally, replacement of SF6 gas from breakers was done by evacuating SF6 to an empty cylinder. The evacuation was possible due to pressure difference of SF6 in the interrupter and empty cylinder. Once the pressure is equalized, SF6 will no longer flow from the breaker to the cylinder. In the absence of any evacuating equipment, there is no option but to release the SF6 in atmosphere. However, this practice is outdated and should no longer be followed considering the threat that SF6 poses to the environment. SF6 is a potent green house gas with a global warming potential as high as times as compared to CO2. SF6 has the longest lifetime span in the atmosphere of 3200 years. For these reasons, a lot of focus is now on the sparing use of this gas along with recovery & recycling. SF6 recovery & purification (recycling) equipment is equipped with compressor that liquefies the gas during recovery for on-board storage. It is also equipped with a drying unit containing drier/filter cartridge to remove moisture and particles up to 5 micron in size. The unit is also equipped with a visual indicator to indicate the amount of moisture present in the gas. Once the gas has been dried and purified, an analysis of the gas using the SF6 analyzer should be done prior to refilling. WIKA MAKE SF6 Q ANALYZER: The WIKA make SF6 -Quality-Analyser is a multi-sensor device to check moisture, decomposition (SO2 solely or both SO2 and HF) & purity of SF6. The base unit consists of an embedded computer with touch screen for data acquisition and storage. The necessary hardware to make a physical connection to gas insulated equipment is provided with the device. With all sensors installed, the operator simply makes a connection to the equipment being tested and after analysis will receive test values for moisture, purity and with optional sensors installed decomposition products. The test values are internally compared to the CIGRE B or IEC standard for SF6 contamination or reuse (or customer defined limits), and a pass/fail icon shows on the touch screen. The readings are 18

stored in the internal memory of the device which can be extracted to a USB drive. WIKA MAKE GAS RECOVERY UNIT GFU 10: The GFU 10 is a portable SF6 handling and maintenance unit manufactured by WIKA. It uses oil-less compressors to recover, purify & charge the SF6 gas in breakers and/or storage cylinders. The compressors under normal operating conditions, can liquefy SF6 gas during recovery. This allows for more SF6 to be temporarily stored on the unit than if it remained in a gas state. The compressor can also draw a vacuum on the equipment while pumping against high pressures. This allows more SF6 to be recovered and stored for purification and re-use. The ability to produce high pressures also gives the GFU-10 the ability to consolidate and fill the SF6 cylinders. The entire unit is trolley mounted for easy movement and comes with on-board instructions for the operator to follow. Some of the important features of the unit are: Cartridge style inlet/outlet drier/filter cartridge, to remove moisture, (to -49 F/-45 C dew point) & particles to 5 micron. Spin-on purification filter, to remove lower fluorides of sulfur which are produced by arcing. Spin-on particulate filter, to filter SF6 to 0.1 micron nominal. Inlet and outlet moisture indicator. The indicator will be light green if the water content of gas is below 40 ppmw or will be yellow if the water content is above 100 ppmw. Compressor running time counter to track operation and plan maintenance. High pressure storage tank with level switch & relief valve to temporarily store 50 lb(18 kg) of gas at 21 C, tank temperature. An auxiliary valve to connect an SF6 cylinder or similar storage vessel. This valve can also be used as a sample port for connecting a hygrometer. A CASE STUDY: Analysis of SF6 gas of 132KV CTPS-DTPS Line#61 Circuit Breaker using WIKA SF6 Q Analyser & Recovery thereof using WIKA SF6 GFU 10 Gas recovery unit. Details of the Circuit Breaker : Manufacturer BHEL CB Type 3AR1EG YOM Rating 132KV, 2500A, 40KA/3Sec This circuit breaker has been in operation for more than 20 years. So the analysis of the gas was done using the WIKA SF6 Q Analyser and the following result was found : Due to presence of high moisture content, the analyzer gave the result of FAILED and decision was taken to recycle and recover the gas using the GFU-10 recovery unit. 19

After the recovery, analysis of the recovered gas was done and the following results were obtained. Similar exercise has been carried out in different BHEL 3AR1EG 132KV SF6 circuit breakers installed at CTPS 132KV Yard & improvement in the operating parameters of the SF6 has been obtained. CONCLUSION: To determine the condition of Poles of HV/EHV CB a number of techniques are used by substation engineers. Starting from measurement of IR, measurement of breaker timings and measurement of static and dynamic resistances of the breaker are used. Along with these methods, the analysis of the SF6 gas in circuit breakers is necessary to ensure long and healthy operation of the circuit breaker. By the use of SF6 Quality analysers, decision can be taken on further course of action. SF6 recovery units should be used for the safe handling of SF6, recovery from circuit breakers and purification. In this manner, consumption of SF6 can also gradually be lowered. The task of SF6 analysis is an important job during the major overhauling of Sf6 circuit breakers. Other than inspection of operating contacts of the circuit breaker, it is essential that the SF6 be analyzed and purified at the time of refilling. Circuit Breaker Manufacturers like ABB, Siemens & major power utilities like NTPC, Power Grid have detailed the scope of work for SF6 CB Overhauling. A major component in this scope involves the handling of SF6 gas. So it is essential that power stations/utilities maintain SF6 handling equipment and SF6 Quality analyzers with them. 22 SH OT AT SIGHT - MR KASHIF AHSAN, EE(M), BAMS, U#7,8, MTPS Are We Heading Towards A World Stripped Bare Like This Tree? 21

22 VERSUS A WAR OF 300 WORDS.. DO YOU THINK THE RESERVATION POLICY OF OUR COUNTRY HAS REALLY SERVED ITS PURPOSE?

THE TOPIC LAST MONTH: DO YOU THINK SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ARE MAKING US SOCIALLY MORE ACTIVE? A CLOSELY FOUGHT POLL, AS OF THE 189 PEOPLE WHO VOICED THEIR OPINION, 83 SAID YES, 97 NO & 9 CAN T SAY. A FEW OF THE CONTRASTING VIEWS: NO. With the noble conception of its advent, it has taken a different route in recent past. Unfortunately in context of our motherland India, things get worse in no time. We people often use these social networking sites to vent our anger lying on the comfortable sofa in an air conditioned room against political thoughts, matters being debated by media houses, sports extravaganzas etc. Being active can t be construed with being socially active. We use the networking site in an inane way by just hitting the likes, sharing without judging its originality and correctness, most often we post what we actually don t know. We need to learn how well social networking site can be use actually. Being social always remained one of the important attribute of human behaviour, which is shrinking day by day due to lack of direct communication. We really don t want to intermingle, talk to each other, and especially listen to each other. We need to learn art of listening. We must be deceiving if we console ourselves that we are in touch with dear ones staying away from us by the use of social media apps(even on the YES NO CAN'T SAY commode also). The embarrassing fact remains that we don t even ask & talk single time in a day to our neighbour staying in our milieu. To stay in touch & to socialize with each other, social media could be used just as a tool but not necessarily required. I would like to quote a famous line by Erik Qualman which itself says a lot. We don t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it YES! YES! YES! It s amazing to think how social media was just a budding concept a decade back! Come to think of it, & you will know instantly that social media, like any other technological boon is a two-faced sword. How you use it is entirely up to you. 25 Kodak moments of your student life is far more therapeutic than most things in the world. Now just to curse or rant about social media because your childhood friends are no longer the langotiya buddies you knew and have grown into self-centred and narcissistic snobs would certainly be idiotic! It s again up to you to decide whom to follow and whom to let go. Man, life s all about changes and you got to accept them. Our discomfort often creeps in because human beings are prone to compare their lives with others. Drop this quality and social media is pure bliss! For parents who blame social media for hosting inappropriate contents, I do agree; nonetheless, you can never shield your children from the onslaught of commercialization in today s world. Remember! The inappropriate ads that irk you by popping up with each new click are simply means to attract your attention. What you consider adult content is just someone else s means of earning a buck! There s no respite from the ugly face of consumerism for our future generations; you switch off all social media and still find your child glued to such contents albeit from other sources. There s no saving the day unless we literally drop our fauxliberalization & become comfortable in our skin & stop hopping from conservative attitude to brazenness as per our perception. Coming to the plus points, ten years ago, you called someone overseas in real time & didn t get them & you continued trying. Today, just drop a message, a video message or an e- mail & get a reply soon.today, social networking platforms have given rise to different creative communities to create groups of like- minded individuals interested in everything from philanthropy to gardening. Social causes and media reporting authenticity have gathered huge impetus owing to social networking. Today s youth can even opt for virtual classrooms on every possible topic on earth. Starting your own enterprise, online shopping, e-books.the allure of the pros certainly overshadows the cons for me. I m definitely going for a BIG Y-E-S! - SMT DEBASREE BANERJEE EE(M), TECHNICAL Bhebe dekhecho ki? tararao joto alokborsho dure, aro dure, tumi ar ami jai krome shorey shorey (Have you ever thought how we have drifted apart, you and me, further away than those stars?). The Bangla Band Mohiner Ghoraguli had come up with this song in 1995, talking about the paradox of television. While the world is shrinking into that square box, gulfs are opening up between people. Almost as if they were predicting something with an amazing foresight, their song album was named Abar Bochor Kuri Pore (Again after Twenty Years) & roughly twenty years after the release of that album, we are asking the same uncomfortable questions about social networking. 24

How do devices that are supposed to join people end up distancing them? One day, I was passing by a bus stand where a group of people were waiting. Something struck me as unusual. Only after some time I realized that all of them were pouring into their cell phones, oblivious of each other s presence. With social networking making its way into cell phones that we carry everywhere with us, this has become a common sight nowadays. That is what social networking does - it connects us to people who we have or may have met ten years ago but it also lets us shut out the individual standing just ten feet away. The pictures we put up on Facebook are well-edited ones, where we think we look our best. The social self that we carve out for ourselves on these platforms are deeply conditioned by what we think people want to see. In trying to keep up with that restrictive, virtual image, we forget our real selves. We log onto the social platforms to escape our humdrum lives. Social networking makes us feel sought after, assures us of hundreds of friends and followers. But, in taking the help of this medium while communicating with people, we forget the art of deep & long face to face conversations. The medium provides a mask to the unsocial streak in people. But, what about the people whom it turns unsocial?

A few months ago I also had accounts in some very famous and well known social networking sites. I was an active member of a group. Every day started with a good morning message with a beautiful photo. Then the whole day my mobile just went on beeping & my mind simply got diverted as I got busy in replying to all messages. It continued for some months after which I realized that I am getting conscious about my mobile & its messages all the time. I got busy with unwanted messages whose use in my day to day life was nothing. I suppose these social networking sites had been created to enable us to remain in contact with our near and dear ones & to say hi hello to others or in real sense to be socially active. Unfortunately I found people have started using it as a medium for showing others about their status, their wealth or every tit bit incidents of their personal lives. A funny thing also I noticed, that people get agitated and promptly start giving sentimental & highly charged dialogues on some common issues of our country or world but in real life I find those very guys scared to speak out even a line when they are asked to give their comments on the same issues. It s really funny. We all realize the truth that day by day our social and family values are degrading at an alarming rate. There are thousands of cases that we come across every day that shows how selfish, mean minded & unsocial we have become. We ask people over social networking sites about their health, life & food menu but we get irritated if our family members ask us to give them a glass of water. We have time to spend for those who may or may not be our own but we don t have time for our family. We fall in love with far away persons but we never develop a bit of mercy or care for our maid, drivers or street animals. We start sharing messages with social issues but just close our eyes seeing an accident victim & try to ignore his/her call for help. If this attitude means socially active then yes!! Definitely!! We are becoming more socially active & also racing towards making a more sociable society to be lived in. - Ms SANJULATA MOHANTY EE(E), CMC, MTPS 26

ON A TRAIL OF MOVING ICE: ZANSKAR (..continued) NUN KUN PEAK 29

I had a rigid idea that Kargil was a war zone & was expecting the military jackboots, artillery & the lot. But OMG! It was a 100% peaceful, civilian town. Mustaqji took us to a very cozy five storeyed hotel at the main Kargil bazaar area. After some knocking a Ladakhi youth peered out. He explained in very fragile Hindi that the season for Zanskar & Kargil tour is over, hence the hotel is almost deserted; except a few local boarders. The hotel restaurant was closed. But there are quite a few available around the corner. We were lodged into a very comfortable room on 3rd floor. The day was rapidly fading. The low O2 level was being felt now. It was taking a toll to climb stairs, or go uphill for us. There was no electricity. The janitor explained that the local Hydel project wasn t functioning for past one & a half months. Electricity was available only for about 2-3 hrs per day. But there is nothing to worry about! They were equipped with candles! (The generator was shut down since it was off-season) It was evening. The temperature dipped below freezing point (about -3 to -4 C). Mustaqji advised us to take dinner early by pm; since the restaurants may close. We got into a very nice restaurant just opposite our hotel (the chill outside forbade us to venture further) and had a delicious dinner of Biriyani and lamb. Well, that was the last square meal we ate in that tour for a long time. We started next day around 8.30am after having tea at our hotel. The main chowk was very busy & congested. We had breakfast there. Young kids with schoolbags flocked the streets. As were many women in burquas. Most shops were open and vendors crammed the sides of the streets. Cars jammed the streets. Two policemen - one brandishing a danda & the other shouting over a mic were controlling the crowd. There was not a sign of a single firearm anywhere. There was no tension, no terrorism & no trace of violence anywhere. (And of course no electricity either!). There was a magnificent mosque nearby. I bought some walnut & the traditional khobani ka tel. KARGIL TO SHANKOO & NUN-KUN The next day we started our trail along the beautiful Suru river valley. The day was not that cool. A warm sunshine graced us (rare in that season). Our spirits were high. 30

MIG-21, KARGIL 31

First we crossed the Shankoo village. A very typical Ladakhi village; with the graceful many glassed windows adorning the houses. Modular gardens- with various orchids and flowers; done with extreme care. And then suddenly, out of the blue, the Nun-Kun twin peaks came into view. The highest peaks of Jammu & Kashmir. Nun peak is 7135m high. The twin peak of Kun is 7087m tall. A white veil of virgin snow covered them. Fresh snowfall of the year had just started. Nun-Kun was majestic. We started pulling our cameras out. Nothing could satisfy our thirst for the photos. What we did not know then, was that this beauty was going to give us company for the next 200Km or so. We wounded round and round along the hilly roads around Nun- Kun peaks for the next hour or so. We had all the panoramic views of Nun-Kun in our cameras. Then we came to Panikhar. PANIKHAR Panikhar was just another beautiful Ladakhi village with the road winding up steeply. Here two incidents happened. Something that brought us down to the realities of the day. The first was that we crossed a check-post where our papers (Inner line permits & Voter Id) were checked. It was a loose checking. Also the metal road ended at Panikhar. For the next 180Km or so, all that we can call a road consisted of loose pebbles & sometimes just boulders interspersed with thin and thick rivulets and snow. Driving through them was a feat in itself even for the most expert drivers. But Mustaqji was CLOUD & SNOW as comfortable as ever. The second one came as a very benign request by the policeman (unarmed) at the check-post. He requested us to take two Kashmiri youths for a ride (at the back of our spacious car) upto Parkachik; which was about an hour and half ride. Mustaqji immediately got very apprehensive and tensed. He had a rather long argument with the police, vehemently denying the hikers. I was mildly surprised; since hitch-hiking is rather common in Ladakh, as I had known from my experience in Leh-Ladakh tour the previous year. Transports are very sparse on the mountainous roads, and usually nobody denies a lift to stranded people. Suddenly the policeman came upto me- and instead of the usual shouting, he pleaded me to take them on! He even said his name was Golam Rasool, and he swore upon 32

33 PENZILA PASS

his badge that it was absolutely safe to take them on! I acquiesced, much to the indignation of Mustaqji. The two youths were very handsome, powerful, muscularly built. They were soft spoken & polite. They explained to us that they hailed from Srinagar. They were teachers at the Government primary school at Parkachik. The first snows of winter had already started; and all roads will close any day now. Hence they have packed for the winter and are off to duty. Mustaqji drove quickly & without a word. His jaws were set. His face apprehensive. Something was amiss. I felt thoroughly uneasy. PARKACHIK & THE GLACIER Soon snow clad peaks started appearing. The landscape had imperceptibly changed to the cold-desert landscape of Ladakh. Bare solid rock faces. Many coloured peaks followed us. There was sparse greenery only along the sides of the Suru river. Our road was pebbly to bouldery. The first views of the magnificence of the Parkachik glacier came into view. We had our cameras clicking. But Mustaqji was oblivious to everything. He drove like a scared animal waiting to be attacked. Very silent, very alert and very much tensed. We had entered the village of Parkachik. Our hikers took farewell of us, once we were inside the village. They thanked us heartily for the lift and repeatedly requested us to have a cup of tea at least (since we gracefully refused their offer for lunch) with them. Mustaqji was at last very relaxed. He was back to his polite self while turning down their requests and we moved on. But once out of earshot Mustaqji angrily interjected, "Yeh Kashmiri log...yeh kuch bhi ho sakte hai. Dehsat wale, Pakistani spy, kuch bhi ainda koi Kashmiri ko gadi mein mat uthana. Aap logon ka security ka mamla hai. There was no arguing to the facts. I felt deeply sad. Not all Kashmiris are terrorists. But years and years of massacre had left us with such a deep distrust. We cannot even trust our kid's teachers anymore. Parkachik glacier came in front of us with all her majesty. We had a photo session. We longed for some more time. There was not much.we had lunch in a roadside jhopri dhaba with noodles PARKACHIK GLACIER 34

only. We were lucky to get even that. The tourism season had ended. Snowfalls have started. The hill people are planning to move down south. THE WILDERNESS OF SURU VALLEY Human habitation ended with the village of Parkachik. For the next 60-70Km it was just us, the Suru river and the magnificent snow land peaks up to Rangdum. All greenery ended as well. The height of the valley was increasing too. We were moving deeper and deeper into the core of the Himalayas. Oxygen was getting thinner and thinner. Any brisk exertion was causing breathlessness. From now on all we could do is very gentle walking. Mustaqji was unaffected. He was Ladakhi. He could even scale the peaks. Just like so many shepherds of Ladakh. He fondly commented to my query, "Saabji barfili pahadi ka kya naam hota hai? Gore log do char par chad jate hain aur unka naam de dete hain". It was nameless. It was endless expanse of beauty. The valley flooded with gentle sunshine. The peaks were molten gold. Suru was grey to breathtaking blue to green. The only sounds were of the flowing of Suru. Numerous rivulets flowed over our bouldery "road". It was tricky and risky drive as the snow melts by the day into a thousand flows and again falls by the night on the peaks. We moved on. Photo sessions after photo sessions. Videos all the way. Nothing could satisfy our craving. It was the day I got to known what passion is. The day when I felt the touch of Spirituality. The day when I felt the touch of Heavenliness. What we did not know, this was not the climax. More was about to come. RANGDUM Our day's journey came to an end at Rangdum first human habitation in a long way. The first houses. Mustaqji s little ruckus brought two Ladakhi boys from the Government guest house. They explained that the tourism season has ended. However the guest house was still open since few officials and locals were travelling in & out of Padum (the headquarter town of Zanskar) still. To our great relief the government canteen was open with only local food items. I sorely needed a cup of tea. It was about 3.30pm. The rest room was cosy. It was on ground floor. Our Ladakhi caretakers explained that top floor rooms were much colder due to the icy winds. We changed into casuals. But our jackets were on. - DR TANJAY CHAKRABARTI SR M.O, MTPS HOSPITAL (..To be continued) 36

Down the memory lane.. It is said that Let bygones be bygones. But it does no harm in looking back, get a bit nostalgic & savour the journey so far in flashback mode. We request our seniors to show us glimpses of those bygone days by sharing some interesting anecdotes, some momentous happenings & definitely some good old snaps like this I t seems that it is a matter of yesterday, but tracking down the time more than 28 years have elapsed when I joined DVC at Sr. CE Office Maithon on 12th May 1988, on a very hot summer day. During the on job training after brief stint at CTPS, R&D Maithon, I completed major portion in Gas turbine, erection, commissioning with Mr. Newton Lynch, Field Engineer for BOP from GE, USA and under Shri S.K. Ghosh, SDE (M), my mentor, with Sri H.P. Srivastava as Chief Engineer. For next 20 years Gas Turbine was my place of work, place of socialisation and my temple of work. I am having deep sense of attachment due to the memories where I worked from GET to SDE 44

to SDE in charge in different departments, like Operation, Fuel, Maintenance etc till transfer to MTPS. The persons who influenced me in my career are Shri N.K. Singh, Shri A.K.Chakraborty & Shri S. Pal.. In 2008 I was transferred to MTPS & placed as SE, Coal Mill, U# 1-6 by Chief Engineer Shri A.K.Sarkar. Being totally novice in Thermal Power Station I approached Shri A.K.Sarkar, a large hearted guardian like boss, about my apprehension and my suitability, since I had no operation background. He expressed confidence in me, citing his own example that he too had no operational experience. I am indebted to Shri P. Kumar Sir, who has helped me a lot in family front when my youngest son refused to adopt his new school at MTPS in I am indebted to Shri P.K.Sikdar, SE(M) for his brotherly help. He stood like a rock beside me, always encouraging me at work and supporting me. My colleague Shri Aman Jyoti, a meticulous planner has a great role in providing me the blue print for work on which I have to act. Within 18 months I was transferred to DVC s first 500 MW Units (MTPS Unit # 7&8) as first maintenance Superintending Engineer with charge of Boiler & Coal Mill, where I was lucky enough to lead a marvellous team of colleagues like Shri Utpal Chatterjee, Shri Sujit Karak, Shri Ratnesh Kumar, Shri Kashif Ahsan & Junior Engineers who have superlative qualities not only as Engineers but as nice persons & I shall always cherish to remember them as companions in golden days of my life, who played pivotal role in stabilizing, making what is in present shape of 1st 500 MW Unit of DVC, having the credit of many firsts like finalizing draft proposal of 1st AMC in 500 MW Contract which was taken as blue print at other stations & also the successfully running of 1st Densveyor type Mill Rejection System. I was so engrossed in the team work that I felt sad thinking that I shall have to leave the team on promotion. Presently, I am in Technical Cell U# 1-8 engrossed with the task of timely procurement and finalization of contract for MTPS and hopeful that with the team support I shall achieve the expectation from me shortly. But one thing is certain that whatever little I could achieve is due to my team members, their effort & hard work. - SHRI R.R.SHARMA DCE(M), TECHNICAL, MTPS 45

BACKFEED Commendable job once again by Team TMM. I thoroughly enjoyed issue of May 16 as always. I specially mention some topic like Ek Sangsarik Sammelan which is bitter truth described in sugar coat by colony maintenance team. Photo shoot by Mr. Sourav Sahoo was fantastic. Looking forward to read description of Zanskar tour by Dr. T. Chakraborty. Congratulations to team TMM and everybody attached to it. - MR ANUPAM MAZUMDER EE(E), ES-III, MTPS Dear Team TMM, I would like to congratulate and thank you for giving such a wonderful magazine The Mejia Mirror`. Your May`16 edition has covered every colours of Mejia, like marvellous performance by MTPS Team at Inter CPSU Chess Competition at Faridabad and Quality Quiz Competition at CTPS, celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti & National Safety Week at MTPS etc. The section which attracted me the most was the first GIS in DVC at BTPS-A. It reflects that `The Mejia Mirror is not confined to MTPS but covers the whole Valley. Your hard work reflects in the magazine. - MR DIGBIJAY ROY SDE(M), ASH HANDLING, MTPS ERRATA IN PAGE 30 OF TMM VOL VIII THE DESIGNATION OF THE AUTHOR DR TANJOY CHAKRABARTI WOULD BE SR.
