IUU is the third institution in India where the two-day International Conference has been organized so far. In his address, Prof. M.P. Jain, Chancellor, IUU said since healthcare entities need to be managed as businesses, it is imperative that people learn about the critical components and principles of businesses, in order to ensure the existence of a successful and inclusive healthcare industry. Prof. R.K. Pandey, Vice Chancellor, IUU welcomed delegates from different countries and stated that in a country like India, where little government support is provided in healthcare (in contrast with USA and China), there is huge scope for the growth of healthcare businesses. Prof. Ashish Chandra, University of Houston, USA and Conference Program Chair, briefed the audience about the history of the conference which began in May 2000 in Mexico. He hoped the conference will provide valuable insights and ideas pertaining to healthcare and global business issues to practitioners, academicians, research scholars, students, and administrators. Despite several measurest taken to control pollution everywhere, the situation is not good at the root level. Collectively, it appears that people do care for their environment but individually they don't seem to care much to solve or take initiatives regarding these environmental problems. According to some researchers, climate change will not be taken seriously until the media highlights its significance and treats these issues with the seriousness they deserve. Limited coverage on the part of the media cannot convince the public about the uncertain dangers, arising in the future. As the threat lies in the future, some people don't believe in climate science. According to psychologist, Daniel Gilbert, we respond most strongly to threats that are personal, that represent abrupt changes in our environment, that are immoral or indecent and that are affecting us now. We talk about environmental issues that appear to be a distant problem and will be faced by our future generations. There is another group which believes global warming is a conspiracy theory. In 2012, US President Donald Trump tweeted: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive. However, this is not to suggest that nobody is taking this issue seriously. There are people who do care about their environment, but not on a consistent basis. They take significant yet sporadic steps on World Environment Day or Earth Day or when they hear about the importance of pollution free surroundings. Sometimes concerned people don't receive encouragement and they also become passive and choose the ostrich approach. Maybe if climate change threatened puppies or CO 2 was blue/black in colour, we would have dealt with this issue more passionately. The education level in the world is also not very reassuring. Environmental issues in the third world countries cannot become a priority as they have to deal with health issues, safety, poverty, unemployment, inflation, energy shortage etc Here is an interesting theory circulating on internet- Game of Thrones is really all about climate change. White Walkers are a threat to all mankind, while mankind is busy fighting with each other for the control of the kingdom instead of uniting to face the common enemy, and sometimes they even deny the existence of the White Walkers. Sounds relatable, right? We belong to the earth and the earth belongs to all of us. It's we who have to take the responsibility of sustaining it. We can't hope for a miracle nor can we blame government for every fault. Environmental issues cannot be put off for tomorrow because- Summer is coming. Technology is nowadays, an inevitable part of our lives. Each minute of our routines is full of interactions with gadgets and gizmos of all sorts. And most of the time is spent mindlessly scrolling through 'Timelines', 'Snapchats', 'Tweets' that eat up our day. Technology, which was meant to advance and enrich our knowledge, has now drawn us away from reading 'real books, writing journals, playing outdoor games, spending quality times with our families, etc. If we analyze our activities critically, one will find that humans have become more disconnected in this 'web-connected' world. Just look around you. Everyone is staring down at their screens, without any worry for a shoulder sprain. Our over-reliance on these small-screen devices is now being defined as 'Tech addiction' by doctors. Our obsessive behavior to check our phones every now and then is not only unnecessary but also unhealthy. We 'Instagram' our happy moments, rather than living them to the fullest. When we don't find our phones in our pockets we get panic attacks. 'Low Battery' warning always makes us wince. Our memories are getting impaired because of our excessive dependence on cellphones and tablets. When was the last time that you memorized a cell phone number or remembered your to-do list? When was the last time you went screenfree on airplane mode intentionally? When was the last time you had your lunch peacefully without the company of your phone? In this world full of distractions and FOMO (Fear of losing out), where apps and advertisements fight for our attention, it is okay for us to break up with our phones every once in a while. Undertake a digital detox and experience the physical world at its finest. It's about time for us to disconnect with technology and reconnect with the people, because life is what happens between Wi-Fi signals. 5 5 Aishwarya Pande BAJMC II When anybody mentions meditation, the first thing to strike our minds is someone sitting upright peacefully in a lotus position. Apparently someone highly enlightened and way beyond this world and its pleasures. This person connects with the universe on levels we aren't even aware of. This person in our imagination is usually old. Well, I won't deny the verity of the imagination entirely. But this view is demonstrative of how little we know about meditation. Meditation is supposed to have been adopted from the Vedas. Therefore, it has its roots lying in our culture. It is ironic how the entire world is revelling in the glory of meditation but we ourselves are oblivious to it. Let's avoid digging into the history of Meditation but let's try to understand what it really stands for. Meditation really aims at calming the chaos that lies within. It is an activity which gives one deep rest. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar claims that meditation isn't an activity of concentration, but just the opposite. It is de- concentration. According to Sadhguru, it is the art of making the mind a slave and yourself the master. Usually we lead our lives the other way round. Our Vedas stress on the immense power the mind beholds. Meditation therefore, has everything to do with the most powerful tool we all have the mind. The deeper one goes into this subject, the more he discovers. The more he discovers, the more he is enlightened. But here we would try to simplify things and understand them at a basic level. Meditation has a lot of benefits. To keep oneself healthy mentally, meditation is the key. This key unlocks other doors eventually. A healthy mind leads to a healthy body and that in turn affects our social wellbeing too. To name few mental benefits, meditation helps in achieving: A calm mind Better concentration Heightened perception as well as intuition Improvement in Communication skills Inner strength An ability of healing Reduction of negativity Relaxation, rejuvenation, a sense of being at peace and happiness are all a result of meditation. Apart from the above, in today's hectic lifestyle, adopting meditation helps one to lead a quality life. Meditation leads to increased parasympathetic activities. It reduces stress releasing hormones and also brings hormonal balance in the body. It has many other positive neurophysiological effects in the body. It is a way to receive peace and spiritual wellbeing. Meditation is a state of thoughtless awareness. We need to stop this incessant mind chatter once in a while, that continues lifelong. It is a way through which human beings unlock higher levels of consciousness. We energize ourselves through meditation thereby empowering ourselves. As science states, everything exists in the form of energy. Energy can neither be created, nor be destroyed. It can only be transformed. Thus, allow yourselves to be the master of your energies. The mind is an unexplored ocean. One has to dive deep into it to realize its true potential. Unfortunately, many of us swim at the surface our entire lives. But if one wishes to really understand the essence of the soul, then one has to explore beyond the physical. There are different ways of meditating and not one specific method can be called the right one. It is best to understand and then choose according to your own will, which way suits you best. Guided meditation is also a great choice but be very sure who you allow yourself to be guided by. The guidance of a realized soul or true master can establish balance but the opposite leads to mental imbalance. It's a common saying: 'Meditation is food for soul'. Therefore, do not starve your soul. Savour the benefits of meditation and you will fall in love with the taste of it. Anwesha Sen Majumdar Faculty, SOMC Bholanath Mukherjee pulled up in the driveway of his new house. It was a huge British era officer's bungalow, on the outskirts of Palaumau, in the state of Bihar. Abandoned two years ago, Bholanath babu was the newest resident. Dilapidated, it evoked a forlorn look. He screamed at the helpers as they tugged down the furniture from the truck. Bholanath, a general physician working for the state government, was a plump yet stout looking man in his 50's. White hair streaked his forehead. Even though those age lines on his forehead aged him, his face shone of resolute demeanor. Jasmine purred by his side, his Persian cat of seven years. She has been his companion since his wife died and his children moved abroad. Leaving his busy medical practice behind in Dhanbad seemed to be a blessing for him. He decided to make full use of the silence and serenity the small town had to offer. The bungalow caretaker came running from nowhere. The lithe built tribal lad, with weaving long hair and a fanged earring, came up to the doctor and said I am your caretaker Saab, he said with folded hands. Bholanath smiled at him and asked him if he could arrange for an assistant to help him with his private practice in the evening. The caretaker smiled Of course Saab. Well, my younger brother Mohit can be your assistant. He is nice boy sir and has worked with previous doctors before. Ok ok, tell him to meet me tomorrow, today I intend to just rest said the doctor. The sun was about to set. The only problem with small town forest areas is the lack of population. You don't see much people around. The town seemed to shut by itself. He heard jackals howl far away. Bholanath babu Bholanath Babu's House stretched his feet on the sofa. Looking around at the furniture, he wondered whether he ought to take a smaller bungalow. With six rooms, he felt the place was way too much eerie and silent. Lost in his thoughts he suddenly heard a knock. Opening the door, he found a thin balding old man, with manic bloodshot eyes looking up at him. Saab, help me please. Bholanath babu was a bit puzzled. It hasn't been a day that he was in the town that he been asked to see a patient. A small town maybe but to have a new patient on the first days seemed so unlikely. The man looked above 60. He almost seemed to croak. Pulling two chairs in the verandah, he asked him what the problem was. Saab, how could you not know? I have been taking the medicines as you have prescribed. My headaches have been the worse, doctor. Bholanath was flummoxed. Sure he got crazy patients all the time, but getting one in the new place was unlikely. Checking his heart pulse the old man suddenly yanked his hand away. Doctor you said I will be fine. I am not fine. Do something about my headaches." Bholanath gave a sigh You never came to me before. How do I know what kind of illness are you having? You know I am new in town. Tell me your ailment and maybe I can help you. The old was looked sheepishly at him. And then gave a toothy smile. Suddenly laughing out loud he said doctor you joke a lot Saab, laughing out even more loudly and looking like a maniac. Bholanath was a little befuddled. He didn't get many patients who laughed like crazy. The old man composing himself, looked straight at Bholanath and asked for a glass of water. Bholanath looked quizzically at the man. He deduced he was suffering from some kind of stress. Nevertheless, he decided to get a glass of water, when he noticed Jasmine missing. The lazy cat was always there whenever there was a patient around. Setting aside his discomfort, Bholanath filled the steel glass to the brim. Most of his belongings were still packed so he had to maneuver his way around the boxes. Clutching the glass of water he came out in the veranda and saw the man was nowhere in sight. All was there was to welcome him were the winds and the swishing trees. A chill went down his spine. The street lamp flickered away in a distance. Putting down the glass on the chair he walked up to the gate. Peeking through the distance of the road he saw no soul in sight. Sighing to himself he went over the strange incident in his mind. Suddenly he heard something crash in the house. TO BE CONTINUED
