Sunday Worship October 28 2018 10:30 a.m. Ou r Mission: Gro wing in Sp irit Living as D isciple s Se rving God s World Preparation for Worship Prayer for Sunday Morning God we rejoice that today no burden of work will be upon us and that our body and soul are free to rest. We thank thee that of old this day was hallowed by thee for all who toil, and that from generation to generation the weary sons of men have found it a shelter and breathing space. We pray for thy peace of on all our brothers and sisters who are glad to cease from labor and to enjoy the comfort of their home and the companionship of those whom they love. Forbid that the pressure of covetousness or thoughtless love of pleasure rob any who are worn of their divine right of rest. Grant us wisdom and self-control that our pleasures may not be follies, lest our leisure drain us more than our work. Teach us that in the mystic unity of our nature our body cannot rest unless our soul has repose, so that we may walk this day in thy presence in tranquility of spirit, taking each joy as thy gift, and on the morrow return to our labor refreshed and content. Walter Rauschenbusch, Prayers of the Social Awakening Please stand if you are able.

2 We Gather in God s Name Prelude Welcome and Announcements Ray Freeman Please sign the friendship register Passing of the Peace Leader: The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Hymn #771 What Is the World Like Call to Worship One: In the midst of a world where people hunger and thirst... Many: come worship a God who feeds the hungry. One: In the midst of a world where people are abused and oppressed... Many: come worship a God who calls for compassion and justice. One: In the midst of a world filled with wars and rumor of war... Many: come worship a God who desires nothing less than peace for the world. One: In the midst of a world of spiritual emptiness... Many: come worship a God who gives life meaning. One: Come worship a God whose grace and love know no end. Hymn #738 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee Prayer of Confession Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior, Amen. Hymn #784 By the Waters of Babylon

3 Assurance of Pardon Leader: The good news is that Christ calls us to new life and enables us to begin again and again and again and again. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. 4 TODAY GRACE INSIGHTS A new enquirers class is today for those who are curious about Grace, Presbyterians, and faith, and those who seek membership. Meet in Room 11 downstairs at 9:15. We ll attend church together, have lunch, and finish upstairs in the Library by 2:00. Please join us in our mission. CELEBRATING MINISTRIES There are two boxes in the office where you can place your notes of thanks and appreciation to Pastor Susan who will be leaving us, and Ray Freeman who is retiring as organist. We are also accepting monetary gifts for both Pastor Susan and Ray that will be used for parting gifts. These contributions are not tax-deductible to the donor in order that they may be tax-free to the recipients. Checks may be made out to Grace Presbyterian Church with Gift for (name) on the memo line, and can be delivered to the church office or placed in the offering plate. Susan s Farewell - Sunday, November 4, following worship Ray s Retirement - Sunday, November 11, following worship GRATEFUL GIVING AND LIVING Thanksliving Celebration. Coming on November 7th, First Wednesday GiG (Growing in Grace) will offer A Thanksliving Celebration. "What is Thanksliving?" you ask. It's about living out our thanks for God's blessings and gifts for us. Come for the food (a Thanksgiving-esque meal), stay for the celebration of our blessings and gifts. We'll start serving dinner (informal; come when you re able) at 5:30 p.m., jump into an exciting evening of Thanksliving around 6:40, and wrap up by 7:30. There will be activities for all ages, so bring your family. To help us plan for the food, please look for the GiG sign-up in the narthex. Housewarming for the Ross Family. We are preparing the Davis house for Pastor Katie, her husband, John, and 3 month old Miriam s move-in on November 3 by sponsoring a "pounding." This is an old tradition where church members provide--a pound of sugar, a pound of flour, a pound of butter...or we can be creative and offer a jar of jelly, a restaurant gift card, or diapers for the baby. Donations will be received in the church office by November 1 and tastefully arranged in the Davis house by the APNC as a "counter-top cornucopia" for the family's arrival! Last Sunday s Flash Mob Mission Project. This past Monday the Grace Church bus rolled up to the entrance of Lynbrook Elementary School to deliver the 600 food

5 packs our congregation assembled after last week s worship service. The food will help students who may go hungry on weekends, when school lunches are not provided. Thanks to all Mission Mobsters and church staff for your enthusiastic support for this work of the Lord. Lynbrook students, teachers, and staff all appreciate this example of God s good Grace. Advent Stories. Please send your Christmas stories to Virginia in the office for inclusion in this year s Advent booklet. Include a prayer if you d like. Is there an editor in the house who would like to craft the finished booklet? Peace & Global Witness. Our offering total has reached $1,560. This offering draws Presbyterians together to provide education and resources for dealing with conflict, nurturing reconciliation, and supporting our global brothers and sisters in growing the peace of Christ around the world. Grace retains 25% of that offering, which we have earmarked for the making of a video documenting the struggles and peacemaking efforts of Tent of Nations, located near Bethlehem in the West Bank. Thank you for your generous contributions. CROP Walk. End hunger one step at a time! The 26 th Annual Burke/Fairfax CROP Hunger Walk will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. It is a 2.8-mile walk, starting and ending at Fairfax Presbyterian Church. Please check the table outside the library for more information and sign-ups. GRACE EVENTS Covered Dish Dinner and Middle East Pilgrimage Report - Sunday, November 4, 5:30 p.m. (NOTE TIME CHANGE) Please join for a covered-dish dinner on November 4, which will feature (but not be limited to) authentic Palestinian cuisine prepared by our travelers. Bring your favorite dish and join the fun! Travel team members will share information, experiences, and "Holy moments" from their travels. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the 1.4 million refugees still living in 59 camps in the Middle East. Grace Alternative Gift Fair - Sunday, November 18 Get a head start on your Christmas plans with Grace s much-anticipated annual gift fair. With craft items from around the world, Zuni peanuts, Palestinian olive oil and more than a dozen mission giving opportunities, the fair is a chance to honor friends and family with gifts that fit their values and to put the giving spirit of the season at the center of our celebrations. Join us in the library and in Wester Hall before or after worship for music, food, fellowship and fun!
