Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 28, 2018 The L has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. Psalm 126:3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading I will lead the people to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble (Jeremiah 31:7-9). Psalm The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading It was not Christ who glorified himself, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you (Hebrews 5:1-6). Gospel Immediately the blind man received his sight and followed Jesus on the way (Mark 10:46-52). A priest is one called upon by God to bring people to God. Jesus heals Bartimaeus, the blind, in response to his cry. Reflect: Go your way was the blessing and permission given by Jesus to Bartimaeus after healing him; but Bartimaeus chooses to follow Jesus. He knew he had no way other than that of Jesus. Perhaps he understood far better than others what Jesus meant when he had said, I am the way. Bartimaeus chose correctly. There is no way to go deeper sight, knowledge, and life s fulfilment but following Jesus. Pray: Lord Jesus, you are the way, the truth, and the life. Let me walk your path in your light. From: Fr. Paulson Veliyannoor, CMF Bible Diary 2018 Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc. Quezon City, Philippines www.claretianpublications.ph Reprinted with permission Reflections: Bartimaeus sat on the side of the way, having pilgrims throw coins onto his cloak spread out before him. But the presence of Jesus encouraged him to abandon his cloak, jump up from his ground level existence and ask to truly see the way from Jesus perspective. Jesus responded to this act of faith by curing the disease so that Bartimaeus could see ahead in the same way as Jesus and follow him on the Way. page 3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It s our School Fright Fest this weekend. But don t be frightened, don t be scared! Rather, let s have some fun and let s enjoy the day. It s a fun-filled day of carnival games, inflatables, a haunted house, bingo, costume contest, raffles, great food and more. Indeed, this Saturday is a happy day! Join me in congratulating our longtime parishioner Margaret Costello as she receives the 2018 Woman of the Year award given by the San Francisco Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. The ceremony will be held at St. Cecilia s Lower Hall following a Holy Mass that I will be presiding at 11:00AM. Margaret has been a parishioner of Holy Name for the past 60 years. She is the familiar face you see at the entrance of the church for the Sunday, 11:30AM mass. You can t miss her as she greets people and gives out the books for the mass. Her life has been devoted to God and dedicated to service in the church and outside the church. She is one of our Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the weekday and weekend masses. She visits sick and homebound parishioners weekly, for communion service, as well as keeping them abreast with news about the parish. She brings Holy Communion to patients at Kaiser Medical Center, a ministry she has been doing for the past 37 years. Indeed, she is showing us an example of being a mission-partner of Christ in His church and of how to walk the Stewardship way of life. She said that the happiest people are those who volunteer to help others. So on behalf of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, I thank Margaret Costello for her faithful witness to our parish and for her dedication to build the kingdom of God here on earth. Happiness is there when two people are in love. We should be happy to know that we have another wedding taking place this weekend. This is the third wedding we have this month. We congratulate the newly wed couple Christopher Zawaideh (HN 05) and Nadia Madanat (HN 06). With the Fright Fest and wedding taking place at the same time this Saturday, parking will be hard. Somehow, we have improved our parking situation inside the school yard during the weekend masses. We have asked parishioners to park perpendicular facing the wall. We hope everybody will be used to doing it this way in due time, so we can have an orderly parking and we can accommodate more cars. A businessman walked into a New York City bank and asked for the loan officer. He said he was going to Europe on business for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000. The loan officer said the bank would need some security for such a loan. The business man then handed over the keys to a Rolls Royce that was parked on the street in front of the bank. Everything checked out and the loan officer accepted the car as collateral for the loan. An employee then drove the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parked it there. Two weeks later the businessman returned, repaid the $5,000 and the interest which came to $15.41. The loan officer said, "We do appreciate your business and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we Holy Name School is Now Accepting Applications for the 2019-2020 School Year! If you are interested in learning more about Holy Name School, please call the main office at 415-731-4077 to schedule a tour! Holy Name School, mindful of its mission to be witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students of any race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded to or make available to students at this school. Holy Name School does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin, age, gender or disability in administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletics and other school-administered programs. FAZtor s Notes continued. Dear Parishioners and Friends, We hope you are enjoying the fall! Thank you to all of you who supported our Fright Fest by joining us or buying raffle tickets. It is always such a fun day for our students as well as a great reunion for our young alums. Holy Name School is so grateful to have your constant support. Thank you for giving regularly in our second collection and thank you for your support of our Seismic Retrofit Project. We are very happy with how Phase Two ended- we were ahead of schedule and under budget! Great news as we continue to plan for Phase Three, our final phase of our three-year project, which is scheduled to begin in June 2019. We truly value our partnership with our parish- I hope you know you are always welcome at Holy Name School and at all of our events. It is hard to believe that November is about to start. I hope you have a joyful holiday season that is filled with love and gratitude. Sincerely, Natalie Cirigliano-Brosnan, Principal are a bit puzzled. While you were away we checked and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is why you would bother to borrow $5,000?" The business man replied: "Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for fifteen bucks?" Let s strive to walk in love, be kind, be wise and see the world with caring eyes.

FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS PASTORAL OUTREACH Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415)664-8590 REFLECTION: Religion needs prophets, and thank God we have them, because it would be a sad Church that felt itself owner of the truth and rejected everything else. A Church tht only condemns, a Church that sees sins only in others and does not look at the beam in its own eye, is not the authentic Church of Christ. -St. Oscar Romero (1917-1980) became Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. A prophetic voice of the poor who was ultimately martyred at the altar while saying Mass. He was canonized on October 14, 2018. Knitting and Crochet Group meets every fourth Tuesday of the month, at 11:00AM-12:30PM in the meeting room of the Pastoral Center. Thanks very much to those who have made projects that we give to different Centers for women, babies, and those who need warm clothing during this cold season. Our next gathering will be on Oct. 30, 2018. We will begin a new project prayer shawls. You will need soft yarn for this, and chosen colors are dark or light gray, lavender or rose. Thanks for sharing your time and talents, to be enjoyed by all. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
