FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Last Saturday evening after our RCIA session, Sister Necy and I were having a little chat on the sidewalk just by the Pastoral Center where we held the RCIA. Suddenly, we heard a beep from a car parked just in front of us. Inside the car was a young lady who seemed to be mumbling. Unmindful of her concern, we continued talking but the lady honked again and was shouting inside the car, but we could not hear her words because all her windows were closed. She seemed annoyed that we were speaking in front of her car. To avoid any confrontation and her further irritation, we decided to just stop our conversation and leave the scene. As Sr. Necy was going to her car, parked just next to the young lady s, the lady was still staring at Sr. Necy and shouting incomprehensible words. What s wrong with having conversation on the sidewalk, which is a public area, and it was not even past 9PM? Is it a violation? Yet, I still felt bad afterwards because I was not compassionate enough to understand this obviously troubled soul. Should I have approached and asked her if there was anything I could do to help? At least we did not replace anger with anger. The Buddha explained how to handle insult and maintain compassion. One day Buddha was walking through a village. A very angry and rude young man came up and began insulting him. "You have no right teaching others," he shouted. "You are as stupid as everyone else. You are nothing but a fake." Buddha was not upset by these insults. Instead he asked the young man "Tell me, if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?" The man was surprised to be asked such a strange question and answered, "It would belong to me, because I bought the gift." The Buddha smiled and said, "That is correct. And it is exactly the same with your anger. If you become angry with me and I do not get insulted, then the anger falls back on you. You are then the only one who becomes unhappy, not me. All you have done is hurt yourself." "If you want to stop hurting yourself, you must get rid of your anger and become loving instead. When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you love others, everyone is happy." The young man listened closely to these wise words of the Buddha. "You are right, O Enlightened One, "he said. Please teach me the path of love. I wish to become your follower." The Buddha answered kindly, "Of course. I teach anyone who truly wants to learn. Come with me." Beautiful Quotes: If you are right, then there is no need to get angry. And if you are wrong, then you don't have any right to get angry. Find ways to control and manage your anger like this wife: Husband to wife: When I get mad at you, you never fight back. How do you control your anger? Wife: I clean the toilet bowl. Husband: How does that help? Wife: I use your toothbrush. By the way, I saw the same young lady the following day in the same spot and I was ready to approach her, but she was with a man inside her car. Could it have been the case of a relationship issue, like a lover s quarrel? It looked like there was a reconciliation going on inside, and I did not want to intrude. If that was the case, then, HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! Social Gathering for Families with Young Children We re building a new community for families with children under 5 years old at Holy Name. FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.
