HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH San Francisco, CA www.holyname-sf.org SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 24, 2011 TREASURES AND PEARLS The gospel of Matthew continues with parables that hint at what the reign of God might be like. The first parable tells us what the man was doing digging in a field that was not his, but it doesn t matter. He stumbles upon a great treasure, and recognizing its value, gives everything he has for it. The same is true of the pearl merchant. Pearls were very rare and expensive up until the twentieth century. They are found in oysters, deep in salt or fresh water, and divers, then without any air tanks, had to dive for them and collect many thousands of oysters to find good pearls. Enough beautiful, matched pearls for a necklace were a rare and expensive find. A single rare, large pearl was a king s ransom!

FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora The ABC s Child Development Center, the Pre School that occupied the space between the Flanagan Center and the Assembly Room, has vacated our premises last week. We are now in the process of forming our own Holy Name Preschool which may start in a few months time. We are also happy and blessed to have Alice Ho Seher as our new Pre School Director. Alice is not new to many of you, being a parishioner, former Holy Name School parent and last year s president of the Ignatian Guild, which is a group of St. Ignatius mothers that raise money for the SI scholarship fund. Part of the process and requirements of a new preschool license is that the pastor, the school principal and the preschool director have to attend a workshop on Child Care. We fulfilled this requirement last week and we all got certificates of completion. We hope to be given a priority in the re-licensing process, so we can set a date for the opening. I am already looking forward to welcoming our preschoolers, and expecting these little children to write some letters to God like the ones handed to one of the nuns: Dear God: I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday. That was cool! Dear God: Instead of letting people die and having to make new ones, why don't You just keep the ones You have? Dear God: Maybe Cain and Abel would not have killed each other so much if they had their own rooms. That's what my Mom did for me and my brother. Dear God: If You watch me in church on Sunday, I'll show You my new shoes. Dear God: I bet it is very hard for You to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only 4 people in our family and I'm having a hard time loving all of them. Dear God: In school they told us what You do. Who does it when You're on vacation? Dear God: Is it true my father won't get in Heaven if he uses his bowling words in the house? Dear God: Who draws the lines around the countries? Dear God: I went to this wedding and they kissed right in the church. Is that okay? Dear God: Did You really mean "do unto others as they do unto you"? Because if You did, then I'm going to get my brother good. Dear God: Thank You for the baby brother, but what I prayed for was a puppy. Dear God: Please send me a pony. I never asked for anything before. You can look it up. Dear God: I want to be just like my Daddy when I get big, but not with so much hair all over. Dear God: You don't have to worry about me; I always look both ways. LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back As a fairly new Catholic, I m still very much in learning mode. I ve never been a lector. I ve helped with the collection baskets once and probably have helped bring up the gifts once, as well. That s fine. My hands are usually full with two young children at my side. I still make sure to watch the procession of the gift bearers as they walk up to the priest and present the gifts. The prayers that soon follow are also interesting and probably the last set of prayers during the Mass that I ve had to set to memory. Question: In what ways will our prayers change during the Preparation of Gifts? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: If your community sings a hymn while the altar is being prepared, you might not have noticed that a special ritual takes place after the priest has received the gifts of bread and wine and brought them to the altar. With them in hand he prays, Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, These special prayers are based on ancient Jewish table prayers. They recall that God is both the source and recipient of this food offering. We praise God for the works of creation and fruits of the earth that with human labor also symbolize our world, our life and our works. In the forthcoming revised translation of the Mass, these prayers are a bit different, yet our response remains the same: Blessed be God forever. After the priest washes his hands, he invites the assembly to pray. In the revised translation his invitation will sound different: Pray brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. Each of us makes a unique sacrifice in what we bring to the altar. In the action of the Eucharistic Prayer which follows, the sacrifices of all are united in the one great sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Our response will also change slightly, May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The word holy will be included as a more accurate translation of the original Latin text, echoing the description of the Church in the Creed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM JEWISH TRADITION Praised are you, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. Jewish prayer Hamotzi prayed when eating bread.

WHAT DO YOU WANT? WHAT DO YOU NEED? Imagine wearing the same dress, day in and day out, for one whole year. A Seattle woman, Alex Martin, did exactly that. She made the biodegradable brown dress and wore it with different sweaters, jackets, hose, and a little jewelry. She washed it every couple of days and hardly anyone noticed that she was wearing the same dress every single day. Martin said she wanted to protest overconsumption and the intensive marketing directed especially to women about what makes a person good, attractive, and interesting. Clothes, accessories, and makeup are a big part of this image, and the investment of time, effort, and money in personal appearance is immense. While Alex Martin is right in one respect we are pushed and prodded to buy stuff, often to imitate a certain lifestyle portrayed in the media by many celebrities most of us aren t going to stop shopping altogether or make our own biodegradable clothing. Yet we still need to ask ourselves why we feel compelled to expend so much effort on our outer appearance. How does that stack up against the attention we give to our inner self? Whom do we aim to impress? Ourselves? Other people? Why? In today s first reading King Solomon, already a rich man, could have asked God for more riches, the defeat of his enemies, or a long life. Instead, he asks for an understanding heart that knows right from wrong, so he can better fulfill his responsibilities as king. God grants him wisdom, and he uses the gift not for himself alone but for the good of all. Perhaps you dream of winning the lottery or making a fortune. Pray, rather, for the inner gifts you need to help build the kingdom of God. Copyright 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Living Stewardship Now Cure yourself of the affliction of caring how you appear before others. Concern yourself only with how you appear before God. The believer is asked to consider the request that God made of Solomon in today s first reading: Ask something of me and I will give it to you (1 Kings 3:5). Today s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to answer, A share in your kingdom, O God! Today we discover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures the bigger and better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
