Worship September 16, 2018 10:30 a.m. Ou r Mission: Gro wing in Sp irit Living as D isciple s Se rving God s World My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. Preparation for Worship A Prayer by Thomas Merton I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Amen. (Please sign the Friendship Register)

We Gather in God s Name Prelude Ray Freeman Welcome and Announcements Passing of the Peace Leader: People: The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. Song of Praise Old Church Choir Praise Band Call to Worship One: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Many: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. One: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. Many: God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Hymn #307 God of Grace and God of Glory Prayer of Confession We see, O God, but we do not see; often in the tossing and the turmoil of daily life we miss your hand. We see busy-ness and buildings and billboards and we fail to give thanks for creation s beauty. We see meetings and schedules and commitments but fail sometimes to see the people with whom we meet, their hearts, hurts, and needs. We see offenses and miss seeing chances for reconciliation. We see our side of things, but cannot see our neighbor s side. And in those who irritate, tire, or trouble us, we see everything except your image. In short, O God, we see the world through our eyes, not through yours, and we respond accordingly. Forgive us for our sin and shortsightedness. Heal our blindness and redeem our broken-ness, so that we may see and serve you in all things. In Christ s name we pray, Amen. Assurance of Forgiveness One Voice: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting unto everlasting. As far as the East is from the West, so far has God removed our transgression from us. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven. Many Voices: Thanks be to God! Please stand if you are able. 2

GRATEFUL GIVING AND LIVING The Value of Sunday School. It is new each week for you and your children. Someone cares about you and wants to teach and share faith and Christian life. Someone cares for your children, and has made a vow at their baptism to teach them about Jesus, faith, and eternal life. Everyone is accepted there. You can talk about faith, what you question, and what you have experienced and learned. You learn lessons in Jesus name that will help you make sense of all the rest. Everyone learns on their own level, especially children. Train yourself in godliness, for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way. It s outside the Library and can be dropped in the office today. Children s Church Begins a New Year. Following the Children s Message in worship, Preschoolers are invited to Play n Worship. They have a short lesson and an activity, then go to the nursery where you pick them up. K-2nd Graders are invited to Bridges to Worship in Room 14, where they remain until you pick them up after worship. K-2nd Graders stay in worship on Communion Sundays. For the Children. Season of Peace coloring sheets are available in the worship bags and outside the Library. Please take them and share. Amigos and you! The Amigos started cooking here over 20 years ago. They began serving breakfast for the Men s Chorus and now serve the entire church at notable events like the Christmas brunch. The Amigos need more friends, mes amis! No experience necessary. If you can put a meal on the table and like the joy of working hard with friends, you can be an Amigo. Contact Craig Crooks or Warren Clayton. Celebrating Grace Weekday Preschool. The Grace Preschool has been part of our mission since 1956, and next Sunday, September 23rd, we will celebrate! After Sunday School, we ll recognize our teachers and hear the preschoolers sing in worship, then break ground for the new Kurtz Family playground equipment and enjoy a cookout provided by Grace. Please contact Maria Clayton if you can help. Do You Play Handbells? Rehearsals begin tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. Join us! Do you sing tenor? The choir can use 4 or 5 of you. Choir rehearses on Thursdays at 7:30. Help! Due to vacation plans, Virginia will be out of the office on September 21 and from October 19-29. If you can spend a day or even a part day in the office assisting the pastors and greeting visitors, please contact Virginia. You are needed! 4

5 The Mission Challenge. You will find grocery bags with bright yellow signs at various places around the church. We challenge each of you to help fill the bags by bringing at least ONE item for neighbors in need. Shopping lists for ECHO are on the bags and outside the library. Use the green envelopes for monetary donations to continue our support of local and denominational hunger programs. Thank you! Peace and Global Witness. The Path of Daily Reflections, offered by The Presbyterian Mission Agency is a set of daily readings that highlights the theme of the Peace and Global Witness Offering that we will receive on October 7. The readings from voices across the denomination may make you think differently about peace. They are available to download on the E-News, or from the office. Sign Up for Blood Drive. One of the biggest needs for blood is when an emergency makes landfall, such as a hurricane. Please sign up outside the Library to indicate you are willing to donate. We will have a firm date when we have 50 names. Tutors Needed for Neighborhood Elementary Students. Our Tutoring Program is held at Grace on Mondays from 7-8:00 p.m., October 15 through May 20. Tutors and subs are needed. Can you help? Call JoAnn Holmes or Tammy Juba. UPCOMING EVENTS 13th Annual Unity Walk scheduled for today has been postponed. On Sunday, October 14, 1:45 p.m., you will be able to visit congregations of all faiths on an uplifting walk down Massachusetts Avenue in DC. Follow the link on the E-News to find out more. Contact Judy Riekse for details Brown Bag Lunch - Wednesday, September 19, 12:45 p.m. This lunch workshop will help you prepare and plan for the end of life, not with fear, but with faith. Resources will reflect faith and trust in Christ and offer help with planning Christian funeral or memorial services and communicating end-of-life decisions. Representatives from a funeral home, a hospice agency, and a legal firm will speak on how we can be prepared for life s end. Adults of all ages are invited. Bring your lunch. Gettysburg - Saturday, September 22, 8:30 a.m. Please be at the church at 8:30 a.m. The bus will be on its way promptly at 9 a.m. Bring your lunch money as we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant midway through the tour.
