ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner Catholic Charities USA has already collected over three million dollars nationally for disaster relief in Texas. One hundred percent of donations go directly toward assisting the Catholic charities in the Houston area. If you would like to contribute you can do so by sending a contribution to Catholic Charities USA care of : Archdiocese of Detroit, 12 State St., Detroit, MI 48226. It is obvious that our initial contributions only will begin to meet the needs of the people of Houston area. I am sure there will be other opportunities to give in the future. Right now, let us keep all our fellow Americans of Texas in our prayers. Folks who have reserved seats on the bus for the Fr. Solanus Casey Beatification ceremony in November can now begin paying for them. The 56 passenger bus is filled with 20 persons on the waiting list. Please get your $15/person fee into the parish office by Wednesday, September 20th. Deadline for reserving the complimentary ticket for the ceremony is September 12th. If you have already reserved a ticket and have chosen not to use it, please notify the parish office. The Capuchins are waiting to use any ticket not used by parishes. Plans for the parish celebration of the fifth anniversary of St. Kateri s Canonization are quickly taking shape. We are looking forward to having Bishop Battersby celebrate Mass on Sunday, October 22nd. We will be sharing the schedule for the weekend in the weeks ahead. But for now, mark your calendar for October 20-22 for the celebration. (One facet of the weekend is to encourage our young ladies of the parish to dress as a young St. Kateri and be present for the Bishop s Mass. Moms, you might want to get busy.) Please choose one or more categories that you would be interested in cooking for the festival. Return this form to the parish office or call with your preference. We appreciate you help. Page 2 (Continued from page 1) This Sunday, September 10th, St. Anne parish is celebrating their French and Native American heritage. You re invited. St. Anne, founded in 1701 by Cadillac, is the second oldest continuing operating parish in the U.S. The present Church, sixth in the parish history and located a short distance from the Ambassador Bridge, is a magnificent example of French architecture. Tours are given during the week. For information give them a call at 313.496.1701. Have a good week and come to appreciate this Season of Saints that we are entering. FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos Faith Formation & Sacramental Preparation Registration Please send in your registration as soon as possible in order to allow time for the purchases of program materials and supplies. This will ensure that every child will have the items needed for a successful year. Forms are available on the parish website and in the parish office. Our first class is Saturday, September 16th, beginning with 4 PM Mass. Catechist & volunteers needed! I am still looking for two people willing to work with me teaching preschool through kindergarten students during the 4 PM Mass. No experience necessary, just a love of the Lord and a love of children. If you are interested, please contact Grace Lakatos at the parish office. A background check and completion of the program Protecting God s Children are a requirement from the Archdiocese of Detroit and will be provided at no charge to you. Upcoming dates for Protecting God s Children include September 15th (Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit), September 16th (Holy Family Parish, Inkster) and October 12th (St. Fabian, Farmington Hills). Interested in becoming a Catholic? Come on the journey! Adults interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith are invited to join our parish s Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) classes. These classes are for people who have never been baptized in another Christian denomination who would like to know more about the Roman Catholic faith and people who have been baptized but have not received any other sacraments. Our joint program with Sacred Heart, St. Sebastian and St. Albert the Great parishes provides for an individual s growth and conversion through the proclamation of the Gospel, teaching of Catholic doctrine and an introduction to the life of a Catholic. Held on Wednesdays from 7 PM to 9 PM, our first session will begin on Wednesday, September 20th at Sacred Heart Parish Hall. Not sure if you are ready? Come to the first class and see the program for yourself. To register or for more information, call Grace Lakatos at the parish office or dre@stkateridearborn.org. PARISH NEWS JPII GIFT AND BOOKSHOP NEWS Barb Cataldo & Pat Urban Fall is just around the corner and we wanted to inform you of some items we will be stocking related to the season. November is the month when we commemorate both All Saints and All Souls. We have ordered a number of new books about the lives of contemporary saints and holy people. We may better relate to these men and women whose culture and challenges are more similar to our own. These more contemporary biographies shed light on their personal struggles whereas most stories of older saints paint portraits of people whose lives may seem impossible to emulate. Come in and browse the selection. Some customers have inquired about solar battery cemetery memorial candles. The cost per candle ($45) is much more than the traditional wax candle but it can be used year after year. The manufacturer advertises that the AA rechargeable battery lasts 1 year with ongoing (not month long) usage compared with a 7 day burn time for each wax candle. The solar cell works in any colored cylinder container and uses an LED bulb that shines brighter than other bulbs. We will still continue to stock the traditional outdoor wax candles. MEETING FOR ST. KATERI CELEBRATION WEEKEND Please remember to meet at 7:15 PM, September 12th in the church for our planning of the St. Kateri celebration weekend. Anyone who missed the first two meetings is still welcome to attend. There is also an Ethnic Food Meeting September 14th at 7 PM also in the St. Michael room. ST. KATERI HOSTING BISHOP ROBERT BARRON DVD STUDY PRO- GRAM Part I Catholicism The Pivotal Players produced by Bp. Robert Barron and led by Dn. Tom Leonard will begin October 16, 2017. Bush signed into law a bill designating September 11 as Patriot Day. Not to be confused with Patriots' Day, an April holiday in some New England states celebrating the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord. Patriot Day honors the nearly three thousand people who lost their lives on the morning of September 11, 2001. Flags are flown at half-staff throughout the country, and a moment of silence is observed at 8:46 AM Eastern time, the minute the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.
