ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner This Fall will be busy! The installation of the new HVAC system has begun already in the parish hall (St. Francis Hall) and will continue through September. The project design necessitates installing a new drop ceiling which will also have the advantage of having much better and evenly distributed lighting. While costly initially we hope to re-capture some of the cost over time with savings in our gas and electric bills. (Like Kermit the Frog, it s good to be green! )The work will mean delaying some parish programs until October as well as moving some meetings and gatherings to different rooms. I am sure all will work out with everyone s cooperation. Speaking of cooperation, over thirty-one parishioners over the last two weeks have come forward to offer their ideas and service preparing for the celebration of St. Kateri s Fifth Anniversary of Canonization. I sense that our Lily of the Mohawks is with us in our planning sessions. The weekend of October is taking shape with activities and events with everything from an anointing Mass to dancing to the sounds of polka in the parking lot. The weekend is a celebration of this Season of the Saints as we remember St. Kateri, the Feast of All Saints, and the Beatification of Solanus Casey. (Even the Lions are playing the Saints that weekend in October!) Look for more details after Labor Day and ways that maybe you can help and contribute to the Celebration. The September parish trip to the St. Kateri Shrine in upstate New York has 24 pilgrims ready to go. The trip includes much more than just the Shrine. Please say a prayer for a safe and enjoyable trip for our parishioners at the end of next month. I want to call your attention to the reservation form below. Please take a

2 Page 2 moment to reserve a ticket(s) or seat(s) on the bus for November Beatification of Fr. Solanus Casey. As of this writing, 42 seats on the 56 passenger bus have been reserved as well as an equal number of tickets. All reservations are being made on a first-come basis. Let us know your wishes ASAP. FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos Faith Formation & Sacramental Preparation Registration Please send in your registration as soon as possible in order to allow time for the purchases of program materials and supplies. This will ensure that every child will have the items needed for a successful year. Forms are available on the parish website and in the parish office. Our first class is Saturday, September 16th, beginning with 4 PM Mass. Confirmation Mass will be at 11:00 AM October 8th. Did you know that you are a catechist? We all are. We are all called to hand down our Faith to the younger members of our community. Currently we are in need of two people willing to work with the preschool through kindergarten students during the 4 PM Mass. No experience is necessary, just a love of the Lord and a love of children. If you are interested, please contact Grace Lakatos at the parish office. A background check and completion of the program Protecting God s Children are a requirement from the Archdiocese of Detroit and will be provided at no charge to you. Upcoming dates for Protecting God s Children, are September 7th (Sacred Heart, Dearborn), and September 9th ( St. Pius, Southgate). Fill the bus! We are still collecting school supplies and monetary donations for Nativity of Our Lord Parish. Checks can be made out to St. Kateri with a memo notation of Fill the Bus on it. Volunteers are needed to help sort, count, package and deliver these supplies on Monday, August 28th starting at 9:30 AM in the parish hall. If you are able to help for even an hour, please contact the parish with your name and phone number. God bless you for your generosity. PARISH NEWS AUTUMN GETAWAY September We will visit West Point, FDR s Hyde Park, Culinary Institute of American, Baseball Hall of Fame, the shrines of St. Kateri and Our Lady of Martyrs, Culinary Institute of America, and Hyde Park. 3 Page 3 Field. This celebration is a blessing for both the member of the Capuchin Order, of which Fr. Solanus was a part and also for the people of the Archdiocese of Detroit, where Fr. Solanus exercised his priestly ministry for so many years. I wish to point out a grace associated with this great occasion. The Church in her goodness grants the special gift of a plenary indulgence for those who partake in the Beatification Mass and who are properly disposed. When I announced the good news that the Holy Father had approved the miracle which set Fr. Solanus on the path to beatification, I remarked that this was a sign that God loves Detroit.In the words of Fr. Casey, let us Thank God ahead of time as we look forward to the graces we will experience at our great communal celebration of the Eucharist in November. Asking god s blessings upon you through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I remain The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit WHO WAS FATHER SOLANUS? This Capuchin priest, Fr. Solanus Casey, was born on November 25, 1870, the sixth child in a family of ten boys and six girls, on a Wisconsin farm along the bank of the Mississippi. His Irish immigrant parents named him Bernard after his father but he was nicknamed Barney. At an early age he learned obedience, diligence and piety from his Godfearing parents. At 17, eager to aide the family income, he left the farm to work as a hand at the log- booms, as a part-time prison guard, and then as one of the first street-car operators on the trolley. At age 21, he entered St. Francis Seminary High School where he began his priesthood studies. Called by God to the Capuchin Order in 1896, he was given the new name of Solanus. He was a model of religious observance, faithful to the vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience. Although he lacked academic excellence, his Superiors found him worth of ordination to the Priesthood on July 24, His long ministry then began in New York. There he stayed for 14 years as Sacristan, Doorkeeper, Director of Altar Boys and more. He soon became edified by his charity toward the sick, poor and children. Fr. also served at Our Lady of Sorrows in New York City: then at Our Lady of Angels Parish in Harlem, N. Y. Soon after being appointed to the Capuchin Friary of St. Bonaventure in Detroit, July 31, 1924, Fr. Solanus became known and loved for his virtues. Ever available to the poor, the sick, and to troubled souls, he brought comfort and help to every age and walk of life. His ministry was especially noted during the great depression of 1929 when his concern for the poor inspired the Detroit Capuchins to establish their Soup Kitchen, a service of charity that continues to this day. Anne de Detroit will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017, on the church grounds from Noon to 6:30 PM. The Rendezvous is a French Canadian and native American cultured festival and fundraiser, celebrating the founding heritages of Detroit. The day s events begins with Noon Mass, the French Canadian and Native American music, dancing, food, a Heritage Tent with cultural and historical exhibits as well as children s activities, a raffle, artisans featuring French, Native American, Detroit and Michigan themed merchandise with presentations. Simon got a new name after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus renamed him with a title that means "rock." And with that name he gave Peter the mission to build his church. Not Peter's church, not James or Paul's or Calvin's or anybody else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church. So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church--"the keys to the kingdom of heaven"--to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of leadership within the community because Jesus gave him the power to do so. And so too every pope since, exercises this unique leadership within the Church. Jesus knew there needed to be a final voice of authority. As Catholics, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy.
