ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner We all have things in our lives that don't belong there. Maybe it's the poor way we allow someone to treat us, maybe it's a habitual sin, maybe it's a pattern of thought or attitude that traps us in a cycle of regret, anger, or an inability to forgive. Jesus has bold words for us today: "Take these out of here." When we hear the story of the Cleansing of the Temple, it can be easy to look down on the animal-sellers and money-changers. However, they set up shop in the Temple for a very practical purpose. People needed to buy animals to sacrifice, they were going to sacrifice them in the Temple: ergo, quite a convenient, successful marketplace! For many of us, the negative influences in our lives don't come out of nowhere. We might have considered them quite practical and reasonable initially. We wanted to keep the peace, so we allowed someone to talk to us disrespectfully. A person hurt us deeply and we weren't prepared to let go of our resentment right away. Over time, these can fester and corrupt our inner life in a way we didn't expect. The response of Jesus is a strong one. "He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area." God wants us to be whole, healthy human beings. He knows how destructive it is for our souls to be caught up sin -- our own sin and those of others. God's love for us is startlingly fierce. In a few short weeks we will celebrate the culmination of that courageous love as Jesus goes to his death on the cross. In the meantime, Lent is an opportunity for cleansing and renewal. If we've allowed into our lives things that don't belong, let today be the day we ask Jesus to clear them out. It's not always easy or pretty, but it's necessary for our hearts to function the way they were made. God will turn our tables over if we ask Him to. 2 Page 2 PARISH NEWS FAITH FORMATION by Grace Lakatos ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES: Have you received Baptism and Eucharist but not Confirmation? A 6 seek course preparing adults for Confirmation will begin following the celebration of Easter. The one night a week program meets on Thursday evenings from 7-9 PM at St. Kateri. These classes are open to all Catholics wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. If you or someone you know wishes more information, please contact the Faith Formation Director in the parish office. TOWEL SUNDAY: Our collection this year will once again be donated to Nativity of Our Lord parish, Freedom House and Workers House. The items most needed are towels (hand & bath), washcloths, baby hooded towels and baby washcloths, toiletries, feminine hygiene products, baby diapers and baby wipes, sheets & pillowcases (twin bed size only), and incontinence products. CLASSES: Faith Formation classes will meet next on Saturday, March 24 beginning with 4 PM Mass. Sacramental Preparation classes will meet next on Monday, March 5th and March 19th at 6 PM. SCHOOL BELLS St. Anselm Got Books? DVD s Video games? Please donate them to the St. Anselm Festival Used Book & Media Sale scheduled for June 1-3, 2018, in their parish gym. NO ENCYCLOPEDIA SETS OR MAGAZINES, PLEASE. St. Sebastian At the Hop A 1950 s Inspired Auction & Dinner Event: Saturday, March 10th, beginning at 5:30 PM in the Activity Center. A fabulously delicious 8 PM catered meal, great music and everything but the kitchen sink for auction. All proceeds benefit our school. Tickets are $35 per person or $250 for a table of 8 and are available in the school office or on the parish website. For more information contact Becky at AROUND THE VICARIATE Sacred Heart: St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drive: March 17th & 18th. Donation bin will be located in the parking lot both days. St. Sebastian: Mass times: Beginning April 17th-Saturday 4 PM, April l8th Sunday 8 & 10 AM and 5 PM. Confession times: Saturday 3 PM Weekday Masses: Weekday Masses 8 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. Check bulletin for other changes. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS Just a reminder that in addition to the regular hours before and after weekend Masses, we will be open on Fridays during Lent from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM. We will also be open during the special parish Lenten activities. Tell your friends and families that we carry sacramental, religious cards, Lenten books, Easter and First Communion items. Many of the other local religious goods stores have closed in the area. People are unaware of what we offer, so please spread the word. It helps fund the needs of our parish and the Red Cloud School. 3 Page 3 (Continued from page 2) A REMINDER OF LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES There are several events scheduled for this Lent at St Kateri, all of which could use more volunteers in various capacities. Please use the form listed below. If you can help, simply check the line we will contact you. Please return your commitment form to the Parish Office or drop it off in the collection basket. MARCH 1. LINEN COLLECTION (Feb. 26-March 18) This is a three-week program involving collection of sheets, towels, and toiletries for Nativity parishioners and needy outlet centers in Detroit. Contributions can be left in the vestibules of church. Volunteers needed on Monday, March 19 for sorting and delivering. 2. ST. PATRICK S DAY IRISH STEW DINNER (Saturday, March 17) 5:00 PM 7:00 PM. This event involves decorating the dining space, serving coffee and stew at the buffet-style meal. 3. PALM SUNDAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST (Palm Sunday, March 25) 10AM 12:30PM This involves decorating, limited cooking, serving coffee and juice, and clean up. (Pancakes prepared by professional: Jack the Flipper.) 4.CHILDREN S EASTER EGG HUNT (Palm Sunday, March 25) 12:15 PM This involves you laying and hiding eggs on church grounds, supervising with parents in two groups of children (ages:2-5 and 6-9).One thousand pre-filled plastic eggs expected to be collected within minutes. 5. PALM WEAVING (Palm Sunday, March 25)10 AM 12:15 PM This event invites volunteers to share their family traditions and talents weaving crosses and processional palms from ones blessed and distributed this weekend. Event held in Resurrection Hall (Gathering Space) 6. HOT CROSS BUNS AND COFFEE SOCIAL (Holy Thursday, March 29) 8 PM 9:30 PM This is held in the St. Francis Room (Parish Hall) after the Liturgy of the Lord s Supper. We ve planned a full day in Grand Rapids visiting the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park and the Gerald R. Ford Museum on Thursday, May 24th from 8 AM to 9 PM for the reasonable price of $99. TIME FOR EASTER FLOWER TRIBUTE Just one more week to honor your living and deceased family and friends for Easter. PLEASE print all names clearly. Names will appear in the Easter bulletin. We suggest $5 per name, but all donations are appreciated. The deadline date is March 12th. SEDER MEAL You are invited to a Seder Meal on Wednesday, March 28th at 5:45 PM in the Parish Hall. The evening consists of a re-telling of the story of the Passover, based on the Book of Exodus, a complete lamb dinner, including coffee and soft drink. Please bring your own wine or other beverage. The cost is $8.00 per individual, $30 maximum per family. Individuals and families with school-age children (age 5 & up) are welcome. Please reserve your spot by calling the parish office by March 7. AROUND TOWN WOMEN S LENTEN STUDY The Women of Easter: Join us for a weekly session during the Lenten season as we follow the women who witnessed the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. Classes are held from 9:30 AM 11:30 AM at St. Anselm. The Cost is $25 and seats are limited. Contact Donna Stachulski at for days. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Lent is here and so are the Friday Fish Frys starting at 11 AM until 8 PM. Bring your family and friends for a great fish dinner along with your favorite drink.
