Psalm -- Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading -- In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel -- Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am-12:00 pm SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus' post- Resurrection promise, recounted in today's Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus' followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church's greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: "Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!" (Psalm 104:30). Copyright (c) J. S. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on June 10/11.
Pentecost Sunday - June 4, 2017 Happy Pentecost! Although every year the celebration of Pentecost is a special one since it is our parish feast day, this year it is especially wonderful: Groundbreaking for our new Church! This feast is sometimes called The Birthday of the Church because on this day the church began to grow dramatically from a small group of 12 apostles and maybe less than 100 disciples to a community of thousands of believers After the apostles had received the Holy Spirit, Peter went into the streets of Jerusalem and gave witness to Jesus Christ; we read in the Acts of the Apostles that 3,000 asked to be baptized that very day. From that birthday to now, the Christian community has grown to over one billion followers. For us, who are members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Pentecost will always be our Feast Day and this year it should seem like a birthday to us as well: the beginning of actual construction! Many have been asking how long will it take for the completion of the church. Recall that we had five construction companies submit bids; three of them said 10 months; one said 12 and one said 13. So, I m planning on 10 to 12 months roughly a year. So here s my prediction or hopeful expectation: Pentecost means 50; originally it was a Jewish holiday fifty days after Passover. On our Christian calendar, Pentecost is exactly 50 days after Easter. So..I m going to prophesy that we will be in the church in 50 weeks (that s about 11 1/2 months). Now 50 weeks from Sunday, June 4, 2017 (today) is Sunday, May 20, 2018 which is Pentecost Sunday next year. Groundbreaking this Pentecost and Church Dedication next Pentecost. Now, I can t promise that, of course! There could be some unexpected delays: backordering some materials, labor strikes, other complications, etc. But, for now, I m going to be counting down 50 weeks from now; if things change I will add or subtract weeks from my calculation. Now, I really want the first use of the Church to be the Dedication Mass by the Bishop which is supposed to be church rule. Most likely such a celebration would be on a weekday rather than a regularly scheduled weekend Mass. I would like it to be a weekday before Pentecost; however, if construction takes longer or considerably shorter, that date would be adjusted. Come Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy all consolations. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778 HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459 -7778 CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. by JIM GUYNUP HOW TO CONVERSE WITH GOD By St. Alphonsus de Ligouri Translated by Fr.L.X.Aubin, C.SS.R Available through TanBooks.Com You will not find this book on the current best selling list and in fact it is not even a book; it is in fact a 70 page booklet that contains important information that will draw you into a relationship with God that most of us have never experienced before. As the title indicates it teaches us how to speak directly and with confidence to God. In my 14 years of religious education this is the most asked question I got in my classes. So many of us are so attuned to the beautiful prayers that we were required to memorize that we forget that we can yes talk directly to HIM has the closest friend. St. Alphonsus reminds us in this writing that we can: Speak to him often of your business, your plans, your troubles, your fears/ of everything that concerns you because God won t speak to a soul that does not speak to him. He further explains that when you desire his love he does not wait until you go to him but he anticipates you and comes to you himself with the graces and remedies you need... Other topics discussed include: How does God speak to you in your sleep? What conversations can you have with God? What to do in times of sickness and temptation? How do you communicate when you are ashamed and know you have done wrong? Exactly how do you deal with neighbors in denial of their Christian beliefs? Yes, all of this is fully explained like you have never heard before and like me you will keep this booklet close for easy reference... To those of you who are novices in this there are even a 10 pages section of short prayers and aspirations to go along with your private talk. A closing statement from St. Alphonsus on how to live your daily life is one that should stay with all of us; The Lord should be the only purpose of all your actions and desires. (If you want additional assistance in ordering this booklet or have comments on this review you may reach me at: KGJ906@aol.com) Can YOU or someone you know benefit from a retreat designed for widows and widowers to move through bereavement and towards spiritual and emotional wholeness offered by the Holy Spirit New Beginnings Ministry? GUARDIAN ANGEL CATHEDRAL UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR LITURGICAL MINISTERS In an effort to promote a sense of community and belonging among all Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Las Vegas, we would like to extend an invitation to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Ushers, and adult Altar Servers, to serve at the Cathedral on one weekend, at one Mass each month. Ministering at the Cathedral is an opportunity to experience the Universal Church, considering ninety-five percent of those attending Mass are visitors from around the world. It is also an opportunity to become better acquainted with your Cathedral. The Guardian Angel Cathedral is the Bishop s church. It s where he ordains new priests and deacons, administers the Sacraments, celebrates the Sacred Triduum and Holy Days throughout the Liturgical Year. Other liturgies celebrated at the Cathedral are the Mass of Sending Forth for Seminarians, the White Mass for Catholic Physicians, the Red Mass for Catholic Attorneys, and various Masses for active ministries within the diocese. Please prayerfully consider taking advantage of this opportunity to serve the Church and the People of God. For more information please contact Joseph von Hazmburg at the Guardian Angel Cathedral office at (702)735-5241 or adminassist@gaclv.org. Page 8
