FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora We welcome Sister Cristina Ovejera, FdCC back to Holy Name! Sister Cristina is ministering again to the same community of Holy Name of Jesus as our pastoral associate, but not totally to the same people. Since she left Holy Name some years back, our demographics have changed, some of her old acquaintances have passed away and new families have joined the parish. Sister Cristina will surely fit into the needs of our parish and in walking the Stewardship way of life that we are highlighting, starting this year. More welcome greetings to Father Simon Jin, our resident priest. Archbishop Cordileone has officially appointed him as part-time parochial vicar of Holy Name parish and part-time chaplain at San Francisco General Hospital. He will be an asset to our parish, especially for the Chinese Ministry in the absence of Sr. Esther. Welcome to the Archdiocese of San Francisco! On the other hand, we said good-bye to yet another of our Alumni on Thursday at a Memorial Mass for Patrick D Arcy, HN Class of 1968, Riordan High School Class of 72. Pat, his sister and brothers all attended Holy Name School, and their parents, Gerald (dec.) and Patricia were very active with school and parish events. An arborist and tree trimmer, Pat was known for his basketball skills while at HN, his physical strength, his excellent singing voice and playing the blues harp. It was music that brought him peace during his illness. Our prayers join those of his mother, Pat, and his siblings, Brian, Jerry, Jeanne, and Kevin and their families. Yes, we said goodbye to him, but God says welcome to him! It is always nice to be welcomed! This is why we make every effort to ensure that our parish will be a welcoming community. You don t have to say a word to welcome somebody in the church, all you need is to just SMILE! On one of my trips, a flight stewardess announced: "Hello, and welcome to United Airlines Flt 3376 to Nashville! If you're going to Nashville, you're in the right place. If you're not going to Nashville, you're about to have a really long evening." From a Southwest Airlines employee: "There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane..." Pilot: "Folks, we have reached our cruising altitude now, so I am going to switch the seat belt sign off. Feel free to move about as you wish, but please stay inside the plane till we land... it's a bit cold outside, and if you walk on the wings it affects the flight pattern." After landing... "Welcome to the Portland International Airport. Sorry about the bumpy landing. It's not the captain's fault. It's not the copilot's fault. It's the asphalt." At Holy Name, all are welcome. And as we sing: All are welcome in this place! ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL 2016 Thank you to all who have already sent in their generous donation to the 2016 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. To date we have received 74% of our assessed goal. Of $60,000. I humbly ask those of you who have yet to participate in the Annual Appeal to do so soon. You may want to consider a donation of $600.00 (or more) which qualifies you for the 1% Club. All 1% Club Donors for the 2016 Annual Appeal will be treated to a catered Thank You Dinner (February 2017). If you prefer to do online donation, please log onto our > NERT is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco. Through this program, individuals will learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention. The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that will help individuals respond to a personal emergency as well as act as members of a neighborhood response team. A typical NERT volunteer is not one type. The NERT volunteer is anyone who is active and involved in the community--or wants to be. NERT teams are best formed in neighborhoods through a partnership with existing community groups such as a Neighborhood Watch program, Rotary Club, business group, faith based group or homeowners association. Together with their neighbors, team members and coworkers, they build a NERT network within their own community, teaming with the San Francisco Fire Department. All residents can benefit from NERT training. (Participations under 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian.) NERT connects volunteers with a network of fellow volunteers all working together for a common cause. NERT members are trained citizen first responders who can help save lives. The NERT Training Program is a 20 hour comprehensive program consisting of six (6) class sessions. Delivery of these 6 sessions is offered in a variety of scheduling options. Every potential volunteer must 1) attend and complete all six classes; 2) upon completion of the training, SFFD may provide a certification; 3) individuals who complete the program and obtain certification may be invited to volunteer; and 4) all individuals invited to volunteer continue to do so at the discretion of SFFD. The training instructors are professional firefighters. There is no cost for our neighborhood training classes. There is a fee for private training. Holy Name will be hosting neighborhood training classes. Here s the schedule for the training classes to be presented in Flanagan Center. October 17, 6:00 PM -9:30 PM: Class 1 October 24, 6:00 PM -9:30 PM: Class 2 October 31 NO CLASS November 7, 6:00p-9:30p: Class 3 November 14, 6:00p-9:30p: Class 4 November 21, 6:00p-9:30p: Class 5 November 28, 6:00p-9:30p: Class 6 To register: http://sf-fire.org/training-schedule-registration website : www.holynamesf. org and click on the archdiocesan annual appeal link on the home page.

Edward returns to Holy Name for just three hours on August 27, 2016 from 6pm to 9pm, seeking help for supply medical and surgical equipment needed in his village in Nigeria. MedShare, a non-profit, tax deductible organization, has agreed to provide state-of-the-art medical equipment if we can provide the funds for the shipping containers to take it to Nigeria. Donation fee is $50. Please make out checks to MedShare. This is not a dinner/dance or banquet, though you will not go home hungry and may even win a door prize. Fr. Edward and our own Angela Testani will present a talk and video presentation on the tremendous help these funds will bring to those who are in desperate need for what we take for granted. Call Angela at 415 586 5754 to donate or for information on how you can help. Thank you to the SF Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women The Holy Name Gabriel Project expresses its gratitude to President Cathy Mibach and the San Francisco Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women for your generous support to provide baby supplies in time of urgent need for the homeless families in San Francisco. May God continue to flourish your organization with abundant blessings! THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today s story of Jeremiah and the refrain Lord, come to my aid! remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a sneak preview of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ.
