HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Families, I truly don t know how to thank our parents for an incredible Teacher Appreciation Week. From Monday through Friday, we were all amazed at the outpouring of appreciation that came in so many forms. The halls were decorated with bouquets of balloons; the faculty room was dressed up throughout the week with beautiful flowers and an amazing display of food. We were served breakfast, several delicious lunches, including a baseball lunch, high tea and a medley of sweets. Teachers and staff members received flowers, candy and thank you notes all during the week. A few of us were lucky enough to be picked in a drawing for a gift card. On behalf of the faculty and staff members of Holy Name School, I thank you. You really are the best parents in town and are truly appreciated by each of us. God bless each of you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos NOTE FROM NATASHA S FAMILY Dear Holy Name, Thank you so much, the families and teachers who have reached out to Natasha, by making a donation to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation or buying a bracelet or T-shirt. The PBTF is a fantastic cause because it is trying to fast-forward life-saving treatments for children with this devastating disease. To date there is not a single FDA-approved medication for children with brain tumors, but this organization is committed to changing that. We are gratified to see the groundswell of goodwill shown to our family, as well as the other young warriors battling brain tumors. A big thank, too, to the Good Samaritans who donated bloods or platelets to patients requiring blood transfusions. Almost every child on the seventh floor at UCSF needs blood and/or platelets to help their recovery. Many families are indebted to you. Natasha had two blood transfusions two days ago, and we were told that both donors specifically asked to have the blood designated for Natasha. Aweinspiring. Please keep Natasha and all the young patients who have to endure debilitating treatments to fight their disease in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to learn more about childhood brain tumors, please watch the 5-minute video made by the PBTF on our website: www.firstgiving.com/suzanneleigh Ken and Suzanne Holmes GOOD NEWS CORNER Congratulations to Sophia Ibalio, 2 nd grade, who received an Honorable Mention in this year s Archdiocesan Respect Life Contest. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora What a journey it has been! I just came back from vacation or should I say work-cation. A red wavy line appeared underneath the word indicating that work-cation is not recognized in the dictionary. But that s how I describe the month that I have been away from the parish. Although it is always a choice to just sit and relax by the beach and take a quite moment of rest or to be more fruitful for others, I always take the latter option. So one day after I arrived in my beautiful island of Bohol, Philippines, I was doing a weekend music workshop for a university choir. It was a work related to Holy Name, although not to our parish but to Holy Name University, which is the name of the school run by the SVD fathers. The next weekend was spent on a workshop-seminar for the music ministers of my home Diocese of Tagbilaran. Then another weekend spent, for another choir of the same university. My weekdays were spent flying back and forth to Manila doing my music CD album project. As for my priestly ministry, a young adult charismatic group had scheduled me, even before I arrived, for their first Friday Mass. I also officiated at the mass for the 10 th year death anniversary of my father, whose funeral I was unable to attend. I also administered the Sacrament of Baptism to my first grandnephew, the son of my sister s daughter. Then came the moment of glory. The official release of my new CD album was passionately marked by a colorful launching at the luxurious Bohol s Peacock Garden. Aptly entitled My Life in You, the album contains 12 songs that I wrote and subtitled Psalm of Psalms, revealing their biblical inspiration from the Book of Psalms and providing the great opportunity to express a heartfelt message of hope, love, faith, praise and inspiration. Every three years our province of Bohol gives an award to Ten Outstanding Boholanos Around the World (TOBAW). I felt humbled to be included in the line-up as I accepted the award for the Arts-Music category. Bohol is a prime tourist destination in the Philippines and is famous for its Chocolate Hills, thousands of cone-shaped hills. But the hills are alive with the sound of music. Every time a priest sings in the US, people always asked me, Is he from Bohol too? When I ask why, the response is: Because he sings well. My reply is: Oh, I thought it is because he is good looking too. Now after those glorious moments, like in the Transfiguration scene, I have to come down from that mountain. Perhaps in my case, from those hills, and face the world again and continue my ministry. I M BACK! Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane 8 th GRADE MUSICAL TICKETS ON SALE NOW The eighth grade class is presenting the musical, On The Town. HELLO???? THE FIRST RESPONDER A few days ago, our Parish Secretary received a telephone call from an elderly parishioner who was having difficulty breathing, the caller said she needed help and gave her address. Fortunately, our Secretary was able to identify this caller and was able to call for help. This situation was a true emergency and the phone call should have been 9-1-1. What is a true emergency? Is the victim's condition life or limb threatening? Could the victim's condition worsen and become life or limb-threatening on the way to the hospital? Could moving the victim cause further injury? Does the victim need the skills or equipment of paramedics or emergency medical technicians? Would distance or traffic conditions cause a delay in getting the victim to the hospital? What Are Some Examples? Know which symptoms to watch for. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians and other national organizations, the following are some of the warning signs of a medical emergency: Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure Fainting or loss of consciousness Unresponsiveness when talked to or touched Drowning Unexplained seizures or convulsions Sudden dizziness, weakness, or change in vision Mental change (such as confusion, unusual behavior, difficulty waking or speaking) Unexplained severe headache Sudden or intense pain Bleeding that won't stop Severe vaginal bleeding Coughing up or vomiting blood Suicidal or homicidal feelings Choking Severe burns Allergic reaction Trauma (injury) Hypothermia or abnormally low body temperature Heat stress or exhaustion Motor vehicle accident injury Industrial accident Drug overdose or poisoning Neck or back injury How You Can Help in a Medical Emergency? Know What to Say. Calling for help is easy. Just dial 9-1-1. The information you give the emergency dispatch operator helps EMS help you. Continued»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Catholic Communication Campaign: How the Good News gets around If Jesus Christ were on earth today, how would he spread his message of salvation? Would he use television, radio, newspapers, text messages, billboards, DVDs, or even the Internet? Pope Benedict XVI, in his 43rd message for World Communication Day..., said that "these technologies" are truly a gift to humanity and we must endeavour to ensure that the benefits they offer are put at the service of all human individuals and communities." The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) collection in 1979 to respond to the national and local communications needs of the Church. The collection is unique in that proceeds are split equally between each participating diocese and the national office. Dioceses use their share of the CCC collection to support local communications efforts such as televised Masses and diocesan newspapers. On the national level, CCC funds support the development and production of a wide range of media initiatives that are carried out by USCCB staff and grantee organizations. A portion of the CCC's national funds are also set aside for grants to aid Catholic communication efforts in developing nations. From RSS feeds of the Daily Readings from the New American Bible, to television specials seen on national networks and public service messages seen by millions of Americans, the Catholic Communication Campaign is how the Good News gets around! SCHEDULING YOUR PHOTO APPOINTMENT: If you were not able to schedule your photo appointment with our scheduling volunteers the last 3 Sundays, you can still schedule your own appointment by going to https://www.securedata-trans14.com/ap/ holynameofjesuschurch/index.php?page=10 or by simply logging on to our new website www.holynamesf.org the link to the Lifetouch photo scheduler is on our website. Tell the emergency dispatch operator where to find the person needing emergency care, who is hurt or sick, and what happened. The emergency operator will also need to know what condition the victim is in and if any help is being given. Give the exact location of the emergency. Point out any landmarks nearby intersections, bridges, and buildings that will help the ambulance crew find you. And leave your name, address, and telephone number in case the emergency operator needs to get back in touch with you. Make the right call.
