FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners, This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel. (Mark 1:15b) The Lenten season is here, a holy time of conversion and renewal. It is a time when many people take on practices to help them to focus more on God s love. There are three Lenten practices that come directly from the Bible: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. All three can be great aids for our spiritual growth. Prayer is communication with God, and it is always a response to God s initiative. Whether we know it or not, God is always speaking to us, calling us and inviting to accept the new life he offers. Prayer is our way of responding to his love. Perhaps this Lenten season will provide us an opportunity to spend a little more time in prayer, to read the Bible, to partake in the Stations of the Cross or some other devotion. Though we usually think of fasting in terms of food, Scripture also indicates that God wants us to fast from the things that keep us from loving as we ought. We should fast from attitudes that keep us from forgiving others and seeking forgiveness. We should fast from the things that can become unhealthy attachments that keep us from interacting more deeply with family members and friends things like television, video games or the internet. Almsgiving is a practice that teaches us to be generous. We are called to use our time, talent and treasure to help build up the Kingdom of God. We have been given so many blessings in life. We need to share those blessings with those in need. May this Lenten season be a time of blessing for all of us, and may our Lenten practices help us to be more aware of God s love and mercy! God s Blessings, Fr. Padre Jim Schuerman

How To Make A Good Confession A Pocket Guide to Reconciliation with God The Passion and the Lamb Many today fear that we hover on the brink of global collapse. War, terrorism, poverty and disease provoke a sense of despair. Yet in our midst stands Jesus Christ, undaunted by the brutal realities of a world that rejects him. And as he looks at each of us, he asks directly and personally, Will you havefaith in me? In this powerful book, Fr. Acklin reveals the passionate love of God for every person, love that will not be denied or defeated. God is for us in spite of our indifference. God has not been eclipsed by the world s agenda. God will never abandon us. God will always seek out the wounded and lost. We have his guarantee that this is so because the suffering and death the passion of Jesus clinched the deal confirming God s commitment to his creation. The Passion of the Lamb helps us answer the only question that ultimately matters: Will we have faith in Jesus? LENTEN PENANCE SERVICES The following Lenten Penance Services, with private confessions after the services, will be held in the Lake Geneva area during Lent: Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. St. Benedict Fontana, WI Friday, March 20, at 7 p.m. St. Patrick Elkhorn, WI Saturday, March 21, at 10 a.m. St. Andrew Delavan, WI Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. St. Francis de Sales Lake Geneva, WI HILLTOPPERS The Hilltoppers will meet for their monthly Potluck Lunch on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 12:30 p.m. Bring a dish to pass. This is a designated fund that was started to help families of our day school program who are in need of tuition assistance. It is funded by donations from generous parishioners and by bequests. If a school family is in need of tuition assistance, they apply to a company called TADS. This application can be done either online or on paper, and it is completely confidential. Applications are available in either the school or parish offices. TADS make a financial determination as to how much tuition the family can be expected to pay. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please use the pink envelopes in your packets, or earmark your check or cash for the Angel Fund. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! IT S ALMOST TAX TIME Year-end receipts have been mailed. If you have not yet received your 2014 contribution statement for tax purposes, please contact Judie in the parish office to request one. C ONSULTATION FOR THE 2015 EXTRAORDINARY SYNOD OF BISHOPS In October 2014, the Extraordinary Synod was called by Pope Francis to focus on marriage and the family. The Extraordinary Synod drew on responses from a global consultation, as well as from testimonies from married couples from around the world, on the joys and challenges of family life in our times. In the spirit of dialogue, Pope Francis wishes to receive further feedback from Catholics on the outcome of the Extraordinary Synod, to help the Church prepare for the Ordinary Synod on the Family that is scheduled for Oct. 2-25, 2015. This Ordinary Synod will consider the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and contemporary world and will produce specific guidance on the pastoral care of families in our times. Archbishop Listecki invites you to participate in a consultation process in preparation of his report to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops by participating in a survey to share your views on modern-day family life. You are encouraged to read the preparatory document for the context of the questions, which you may access at the archdiocesan website (www.archmil.org). The Archbishop asks that you prayerfully consider the prepared questions, and if you are interested in participating, complete the onlineconsultation on the Archdiocesan website at www.archmil.org. A short response time has been given to us. In order for the Archdiocese to gather the information and forward it to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, please respond by Sunday, March 1, 2015. SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE - NEW MEMBER NEEDED Are you looking for a way to share your time and talent while promoting Catholic Education? The School Advisory Committee is looking to fill one open member position. Meetings are held every second Monday of the month during the school year. Members serve a three year term. School Advisory assists the principal and pastor with policy development, educational goals and objectives of the school, budget planning and public relations. It is a great opportunity to contribute to the success of the school while staying informed. Parishioners with an interest or background in marketing or development are strongly encouraged to apply! Please pick up an application at either the school or parish office. Also available online at sfdslg.org/school. Email juliedantuma@comcast.net for more information. DEFIBRILLATORS Our parish is in the process of raising funds for two defibrillators, one for the chapel entrance and the other for the Hwy 50 entrance of the church. The school curently has one defibrillator, and recently a parishioner expressed a desire to add a second one to the school in addition to the two that will be mounted in the church entrances. This parishioner has offered to pay the full cost of one defibrillator (around $1,500) if the parish can come up with enough funds for two units. Please help by dropping off your donation in the regular collection or at the parish office with the notation For defibrillator. Thanks, Fr. Jim Schuerman THE LIFE WE SAVE COULD BE YOUR OWN! The parish would like to purchase two portable defibrillators, which would be wall mounted, one by the chapel entrance and one by the Hwy 50 entrance. LG Fire Department strongly recommends that all public buildings have a defibrillator (the Zoll AED is preferred) so that assistance can be given within minutes of a person having a cardiac event. Defibrillators can double their survival rate. The unit talks to the person giving aid so that even an untrained person can use the device. The device will not activate if it is not needed. In Wisconsin, there is no liability for trying to give aid to a person using a defibrillator or even aid at an accident because of the Good Samaritan Law. Training is available from the Fire Department and would be recommended for ushers and other parish leaders. These would then be available during all church services and the many events that we have in the Parish Center. The cost to purchase two units would be around $3,000 through our Fire Department. Please help our parish potentially save a life. Donations can be dropped in the regular collection or at the parish office with a notation For Defibrillator. We will keep you informed on our collection process. For more information, contact Millie McCormick at (630) 310-4703. Let us not only save souls but also potentially save a life!
