The event will include 6 gourmet desserts paired with 6 wine varieties, a silent auction, and live music. All proceeds go to Side by Side, an organization which helps local families in need with rent, utilities, and/or other basic needs. Tickets are $20 each. 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, This Tuesday, Feb. 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. When Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the Temple, they met a holy man named Simeon who recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah. He immediately praised God for Jesus the Christ, a light for revelation for the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. (Luke 2:32) The Presentation of the Lord is a feast of light, and on this day it is traditional to bless the candles to be used in church and at home. Another name for this feast is Candlemas Day. The blessed candles will illuminate our celebrations as we gather in Church to hear the Word proclaimed and share in the Eucharist. Our church is a holy place of encounter with Christ our Light, and I am committed to making sure that it is a bright and beautiful place to worship. As you know, we have been evaluating our parish church building and campus as they are due for some much needed renovation. This process has actually been going on for several years. We have also recently evaluated our ability to raise the funds to do what is needed, and I'm happy to announce that we are officially moving forward! I have appointed a committee and they are already beginning this process. They are: Martha Cucco (chair), Nick Vorpagel (co-chair), Michael Deane, Ken Etten, Rose Lemke, Eric Gallagher, Kathie Murray, Daryl Braun, Tom Murray, Phil Sassano, Katie Alder, Fran Zappitelli, Bill Ring, and Phil Hall. Meetings will take place on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m., with some extra meetings as needed. Meetings will be announced in the bulletin and are open to all parishioners for observation. Minutes from the meetings will be posted on our website under the communications tab. We will also communicate updates to you through (make sure that the parish office has your address). Currently we are in the process of getting bids, creating a budget, and coordinating the calendar. We anticipate that our capital campaign will kick off in May, 2016, and that we will be under construction in January of 2017! Our parish will be marking its 175th anniversary in 2017 and we hope to celebrate it in a bright and beautiful worship space. As we continue our process of renovation and restoration, let us pray that the Lord grant us wisdom and insight to enhance to beauty of our church, and create a space that will deepen our spirit of worship. Cuando la Virgen María y San José su esposo presentaron al infante Jesús en el Templo, han encontrado a un hombre santo nombrado Simeón, quien reconoció a Jesús como el Mesías prometido. De inmediato, Simeón alabó a Dios por Jesús, el Cristo: Luz para iluminar a todos los pueblos, y gloria de tu pueblo, Israel. (Lucas 2:32) La Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor es una fiesta de luz, y en este día se bendice las velas para el uso en la iglesia y en los hogares. Las velas bendecidas iluminarán nuestras celebraciones cuando nos congregamos para escuchar la proclamación de la Palabra y compartir la Eucaristía. Nuestra iglesia es un lugar santo de encuentro con Cristo nuestra Luz, y me comprometo a asegurar que siempre tengamos un lugar bonito y brillante para adorar a Dios. Como ustedes ya saben, estamos en el proceso de evaluar nuestra iglesia y nuestro campus, porque necesitan una renovación. El proceso ya empezó hace varios años, y recientemente hemos hecho una evaluación de nuestra capacidad de recaudar fondos para este proyecto, y estamos siguiendo adelante. He seleccionado algunas personas para un comité para guiar el proceso de renovación de la iglesia: Martha Cucco (presidenta), Nick Vorpagel (vice-presidente), Michael Deane, Ken Etten, Rose Lemke, Eric Gallagher, Kathie Murray, Daryl Braun, Tom Murray, Phil Sassano, Katie Alder, Fran Zapetelli, Bill Ring, and Phil Hall. At Easter, we ll assemble gift bags for women in need. -Submitted by the Human Concerns Committee YEAR OF MERCY: FEBRUARY 2016 Feed the Hungry Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on Dec. 8, 2015 and continue through November 20, Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to practice the Works of Mercy throughout the jubilee year. For February, we focus on the Work of Mercy: Feed the Hungry. Take this Mercy Action: Donate non-perishable food, volunteer at a food pantry/meal program, donate to Catholic Relief Services for global hunger, and eat simply from local food sources. 6 WANT TO MAKE THIS THE BEST LENT EVER? Our St. Francis de Sales family will be offering the book Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly for free to all families on Ash Wednesday as well as the first week-end in Lent, Feb. 13 & 14 after all Masses. There will be English and Spanish copies available. We will have one copy per family. The key to making it your best Lent ever is to take the book, read a chapter a week and join one of the 3 English speaking discussion groups that will be offered weekly on Saturday mornings after 8 a.m. Mass starting Feb. 13, Monday evenings at 7 p.m. starting Feb. 15 and Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. starting Feb. 11. There will also be a discussion group for our Spanish speaking family members tentatively set for Thursday evenings starting Feb. 11. You can attend any group each week to fit your busy schedule and it s not necessary to attend every week but it s likely you ll enjoy them so much you won t want to miss one. Looking for a way to help others in Lake Geneva? Side by Side, a local all-volunteer, non-profit organization is looking for people who are interested in helping their neighbors! Side by side helps families with urgent financial needs with money for rent, utilities, and medication. In 2015, 149 households were helped. Business meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on Wisconsin St. Clients are interviewed on the third Tuesday of each month at the same location. Volunteers are needed and always welcome in many capacities interviewing potential clients, working on fundraisers, promoting the activities of Side by Side in print and digital media, and developing a newsletter are some of the ways you can help. An already bad situation has turned worse. We re in an emergency state and need you to donate as soon as it's safe for you to do so.
