3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK... Dear Parishioners, Why is Lent so early this year? As you know, Easter Sunday is on a different date every year. It is always the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, and this year it occurs early, falling on March 31. Our Lenten journey has already begun. The Lenten season is traditionally a time for adult catechumens to prepare for baptism, and a time for all of us who are already baptized to renew our baptismal commitment, rejecting evil and proclaiming our faith through our words and actions. It is also a time to prepare our minds and hearts for the Paschal Mysteries of Christ s passion, death and resurrection. Traditionally, we do this through prayer and ascetical practices such as fasting and almsgiving. This Lent will also be an important time for the whole Church now that Pope Benedict XVI has announced his resignation. It is a historic time for our Church. We keep the Cardinals in prayer as they prepare themselves for the conclave to elect a new leader of the flock. May they be attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and select a worthy shepherd. Have a blessed Lent! May your prayer and Lenten practices deepen your love for the Lord and give you the strength to keep His commandments. God s blessings, Fr. Seeking to improve your focus and participation at Mass? Here is a way to get ready for the liturgies of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. Pope Benedict announced a Year of Faith, beginning Oct. 11, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the Opening of the Second Vatican Council. The Council s observations on the Mass are a great way for lay men and women to increase their faith through greater understanding of and participation in the Mass. Special attention will be paid over the six sessions this Lent on how the Council s reflections are manifest in the liturgical readings and prayers of Holy Week. Each session will also explore an aspect of the thriving liturgical life of the Archdioceses of Milwaukee and Chicago before the Council. Each session will spend some time on a lay man or woman such as Dorothy Day or JRR Tolkien, whose life was enriched by the Mass in the years before the Council. Join us if you like liturgy, history, beautiful churches, or your mind just plain wanders at Mass. BUILT OF LIVING STONES: ART, ARCHITECTURE AND WORSHIP In every church building, art and architecture become the joint work of the Holy Spirit and the local community. In our design, we prepare a place to receive God's Word and to enter more fully into communion with him. In Built of Living Stones, the bishops offer instruction on how to design places of worship that are dignified, beautiful and suited to sacred celebrations. The Committee on Divine Worship, a standing committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has the responsibility for all matters relating to the Liturgy. Issued on Nov. 16, 2000, Built of Living Stones is the document that must be followed by every parish in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee that builds or renovates a place of worship. Come and join us on the Fridays of Lent, starting at 6:00 p.m. for a Simple Supper, followed at 6:30 p.m. by a Reflection on Built of Living Stones, and concluding at 7:00 p.m. with Stations of the Cross and Benediction. SCHOOL NEWS Our St. Francis de Sales Parish School 8 th grade class recently visited the Franciscan Friary of Marytown in Libertyville, IL. This trip marked the end of the class s study of religious life and monasteries. Marytown is a major friary for the Conventual Franciscans. Their order runs the perpetual adoration chapel there as well as the other ministries. Fr. Edmund started the students day with a talk about what life is like for the friars who live at Marytown. He told them about the history of their order and what makes it different from other religious orders. He also talked to the students about the importance of listening to God to discern your vocation. The students next had a tour of the chapel. This beautiful chapel includes a side chapel to Mary and another to Jesus as the suffering servant. The students got to see the large (over 5 foot) monstrance used for their perpetual adoration program and learned about different Franciscan saints who are shown in mosaics around the chapel. The students also attended noon Mass, appropriately enough on the feast of St. Francis de Sales. After Mass, the students visited the Maximilian Kolbe Museum. Marytown is a great place for anyone to visit! We hope that our visit will encourage some of you to explore Marytown as a place of prayer and reflection.
