3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, As I mentioned in my article last week, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee held a Synod in 2014 to set priorities for our local Church, the first of which has to do with evangelization and the Sunday Mass. Last week, I wrote a bulletin article on the Introductory Rites of the Mass, and explained the significance of the Entrance Song and the Greeting. In today s article, I would like to explain another part of the Introductory Rites called the Act of Penitence and the Kyrie Eleison. After the priest greets the people, he invites them to pause for a moment to call to mind their sins. This is a way for the people to prepare to enter into the sacred mysteries of the Mass, realizing that they are in need of God s forgiveness and mercy. After the brief pause, the priest leads the people in the Confiteor ( I confess to almighty God ). The priest then gives an absolution, asking for God s mercy and forgiveness (though this absolution does not have the efficacy of absolution spoken in the Sacrament of Penance). This is followed by the Kyrie Eleison. This is a chant in the Greek language (the language of the liturgy before Latin became the standard). The chant is, Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison; Kyrie, eleison, or in English, Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord have mercy. The Kyrie is meant to be chanted or recited by all the people. Instead of the Confiteor, the priest or deacon may lead another form of the Act of Penitence, using invocations. For example, the new translation of the Roman Missal will include these: You were sent to heal the contrite of heart: Lord, have mercy. You came to heal sinners: Christ, have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us: Lord, have mercy. From time to time, the blessing and sprinkling of water to recall our baptism may be used in place of the Act of Penitence. This may be done on Sundays, especially in the Easter Season. The Act of Penitence should help us to enter Mass with a spirit of humility. We are constantly in need of God s love and forgiveness, and the Act of Penitence helps us to be more aware of our human condition. May this awareness move us to open our hearts to God s mercy. 4 MISSION APPEAL Fr. Dr. Beda Kiure is a Catholic Pastor and physician working in the Same Diocese of Tanzania East Africa. He has served in Bwambo Village for five years working as the medical director and pastor of Immaculate Conception Church. Fr. Dr. Beda will be speaking to us this coming weekend at all of the Masses about his work in Africa. There will be a special collection to support his work and the projects for health care and education in his Diocese. 6 LABOR DAY SECOND COLLECTION DESIGNATED FOR SIDE BY SIDE Who Are We and What Do We Do Side by Side is a not for profit organization started in 2006 by members of several area churches and service organizations. We began helping families and individuals with financial assistance in We are an ecumenical group. We offer assistance to Badger High School district residents who need help with rent/mortgage payments, utilities and/ or prescriptions. The only qualifier for assistance is demonstrating need by presenting one or more of those bills, and completing a brief application. No questions are asked about legal status, faith or marital status. We seek to serve the least of these. Despite Lake Geneva s reputation as a resort community, the majority of residents are blue and white collar workers or retirees. 15.1% of residents are at or below poverty level. Greater than 50% of students in Badger HS district schools are on the school lunch program. In 2014, we helped 176 individuals or families with an average amount of $ Over $30,000 went for help with rent, another $30,000 helped with utilities, and $142 helped with medication. In some instances, families were kept from homelessness, and others did not have utilities shut off as a result of our assistance. We pay all monies directly to the landlords/mortgage companies, utility companies or pharmacies. Recipients are given help no more often than once a calendar year. We also offer our resource tri-fold which lists agencies and organizations in the Walworth County area that offer other types of help such as clothing, food, job search and resume writing assistance, health care, help for military and former military, and housing. Help yourself to one of our green trifolds on the way out of church! Our funds come from fundraisers grants, and private donations. Many of you have supported us faithfully at our Simple Suppers, Christmas ornament sales, and from generous donations throughout the year. All the monies raised/ donated are used solely to help our recipients. We are an all-volunteer organization and even our postage and advertising and tickets for our Simple Dinners are donated. Our business meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the UCC Church at 715 Wisconsin St., Lake Geneva. Those in need of assistance should bring their rent, utility, or medication bills on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. to the same location.
