Page 2 Second Sunday of Easter April 3, 2016 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY The Jubilee Year of Mercy The Diary of a humble Polish nun, Sister Faus na Kowalska s is considered a private revela- on. The Catechism of the Catholic Church helps us to see the value of such revela ons when they have been recognized by ecclesial authority. While private revela ons do not belong to the deposit of faith, Christ s defini ve Revela on, they are o en helpful to the faithful, in a par cular period of history, to discern and welcome...whatever cons tutes an authen c call of Christ or His saints to the Church (#67). The Divine Mercy appari ons in 1930 s Poland found the world on the threshold of a terrible Second World War. In Nazi Germany, Communist Russia, and in Fascist Italy, godless ideologies and a culture of death prepared the world stage for unimaginable brutality and barbarism. It is no accident that Poland, the first vic m of war me atroci es and the site of some of the worst Nazi concentra on camps, should also be a prophe c sign of Redemp on through Divine Mercy. The revela ons of St. Faus na concern the primacy of God s mercy. No ma er how great the sinner, God offers mercy through Jesus, His Son. The greater the sinner, The greater right he has To my mercy (Diary, 723). The Lord constantly assured St. Faus na of His great love and mercy for all souls. Jesus taught her a prayer the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It is a simple appeal for mercy for us and the world. Prayed on rosary beads, its recita on is a graced experience, especially for the dying and world peace. Jesus asked Faus na that a Feast of Divine Mercy be celebrated every year on the Second Sunday of Easter. It was to be called Divine Mercy Sunday. Eventually this would happen when the Congrega on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments would establish the feast officially on May 23, 2000. It was less than a month a er the canoniza- on of St. Faus na. The purpose of the feast was clear: a perennial invita on to the Chris an world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficul es and trials that mankind will experience in years to come. Divine Mercy Sunday is characterized by the availability of Sacramental Reconcilia on, the Recita on of the Chaplet, and plenary indulgences for those who receive penance, observe the devo on, and pray for the inten- ons of the Holy Father. The icon or pain ng of the Divine Mercy was the Lord s own request. In fact, He asked Faus na to paint it! Through her confessor, St. Faus na commissioned an ar st, Eugene Kazmierowski to paint what she had seen. She carefully supervised the pain ng. While the ar st was faithful to every detail of her vision, she was disappointed with his work. For her, the beauty of the Lord, and the streams of grace and forgiveness flowing from His heart, were poorly realized. Several other versions of the Divine Mercy have since been produced. The original is now in Vilnius, Lithuania. Divine Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy has a special force and urgency. Pope Francis has urged the whole Church not only to contemplate the mystery of mercy as a wellspring of joy, serenity and peace, but also to see it as the supreme act by which God comes to meet us...mercy (is) the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.

The Feast of Mercy Mass will be at Noon followed by the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 3 p.m. Confessions will be heard in English & Polish 2-3 p.m. and the Divine Mercy Chaplet prayed at 3 p.m. followed by Benediction. All are invited to continue the celebration of Easter by participation in all or some part of this feast day! Fund raising net income reflects $50K from the 2016 Replace the Roof Raffle together with the Cookie Sale, Taste of SIJ and the Buddy Concert. WE must consider new fund raising opportunities. Expense: Utility costs are significantly lower - due in part to a mild winter and the new boiler system installed in November, 2015. Maintenance & Building Repairs reflect the initial deposit on the boiler replacement, roof repair and elevator repair. Net ordinary income reflects the deduction from our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign funds to pay for the boiler, roof and elevator. Even though the numbers reflect a negative net income amount, St. Isaac Jogues remains financially sound. We continue our mission with grateful hearts. Your regular donations provide income which supports everything we do. We are particularly blessed with all of the groups and individuals who, in extraordinary ways share their time, talent and treasure. Fundraising efforts including Raffle sales together with donations targeted for specific needs including elevator repair, boiler pump replacement, and tabernacle refinishing allowed us to complete several major projects.
Page 5 Second Sunday of Easter April 3, 2016 Thank you for your generosity at Easter During Holy Week, your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry distributed 22 Easter dinners from Meijer s to needy families. Each family received a ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and a pie for dessert. Even though our hours of distribution did not officially begin until 11AM, clients began arriving at the food pantry by 10:45, and by 11:15AM, we had distributed over 50% of our dinners! Because of your donations, we were able to supplement the Easter dinners from Meijer s with large boxes of non-perishable food from our pantry, including fruits and vegetables, cereals, peanut butter and jelly, soups, pasta and sauce, and cake mixes, cookies and candy. Our goal was to provide each family with plenty of nourishing food, not just for Easter Sunday, but for days to come. We also added many personal hygiene items that we received when we asked for your help. A heartfelt thank you to the guests at the St. Joseph Table who were so generous with their contributions to our ministry. We are also very grateful for the continued support from parishioners and our Women s and Men s Clubs. A special thank you to Bob Costello who negotiated an Easter donation to our ministry from Meijer s, to the parishioner family who sponsored a dinner and to the members of our ministry who packed boxes, loaded the bounty into clients car trunks, and delivered dinners to homebound clients. We believe that we have the most generous parishioners in the world! For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me. DENNIS O NEILL WILL WALK THROUGH CENTURIES OF CHURCH HISTORY WITH RELICS OF OVER 1500 DIFFERENT SAINTS. Dedicated by Archbishop Cupich on November 1, 2015, the SHRINE OF ALL SAINTS is also a Pilgrimage Site for the Year of Mercy. The 10 part series will take place every Thursday evening from April 7th to June 9th at 7PM to 8:30PM at 8523 Georgiana, Morton Grove. Reviewing 2 centuries per week, the series is particularly interesting for those who recently completed RCIA and anyone looking for more information about church history and the role of the saints during those times.
