THE BOULEVARD LIGHTS ARE BLINKING, ITS 45 MPH - YEH!!!! Dear Readers, Several of our regular readers have told me they did not receive the Shabbat & Holiday Reminder for October 3, 2014 sent out on September 29, 2014. I have spoken to our provider Constant Contact and we are not sure why this happened. Hopefully it was a one-time glitch. If you did not receive this issue of the Shabbat Reminder, please respond to this email so I may be able to see a pattern and perhaps determine why there was a problem. Documents & Links A MESSAGE FROM RABBI MICHAEL JAY With Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur 5775 now safely, and a little sadly, behind us, I look back on this High Holiday season as one of the most meaningful in recent memory. This is due, in large part, to the help and guidance provided by the JCC's bright, dedicated, and energetic volunteers. It is because the Board of the JCC is diligent in making sure things run smoothly. And while Cantor Avi Green and I work hard to create a spiritual and approachable service, our effort would fall short without the help of the board and the myriad volunteers involved. All of this said and acknowledged, it is my hope that everyone realizes that the most important part of the holidays is each body and soul that comes through the doors to be a part of this special community and to share in these holy moments. As I was on the Bimah, or walking through the congregation, I got a sense of the congregation's zeitgeist. This year your warmth and connectedness were outstanding. I thank you for that blessing. Before Rosh Hashanah I sent out a link for a pre-holiday international survey sponsored by Rabbis Without Borders that has been designed to determine what we get out of our High Holiday services. If you were kind enough to take that first survey, please click below to take the post-holiday survey. As I mentioned previously the hope is that the results of this study will enable Jewish communities around the world to determine how best to get our. https://asuclas.qualtrics.com/se/?sid=sv_bljbmho1haygjbx SERVICES: Friday October 10 7:30 PM Saturday, October 11 9:30 AM Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays. SH'MINI ATZERET & SIMCHAT TORAH SCHEDULE SH'MINI ATZERET Thursday, October 16 9:30 AM Yizkor will be recited From the opening of our hearts on Rosh Hashanah to the searching of our souls on Yom Kippur, to the rebuilding of our lives on Sukkoth, we are a continually engaged and engaging community. This became apparent this past Sunday morning as a large group of members, from the age of 80 down to the
age of 5, came to the JCC to build our beautiful the Sukkah. When we join together to take part in our traditions, that which is seemingly temporary becomes permanent. Indeed, Jews around the world have been spending time this week building Sukkahs. During the Sukkoth holiday, which begins this Wednesday evening, we traditionally eat in a Sukkah, a temporary dwelling. (However, it is enough, just to sit in one.) This is designed to be reminiscent of the years our ancestors spent wandering in the desert. It also reintroduces us to our agrarian roots. (Yes, our ancestors were farmers.) We also combine special symbolic plant species, a palm branch, willow branches, myrtle branches, and an etrog and waive them all around us. These species are said, in the collective, to symbolize a complete human and these customs are designed to get us to use all of our senses to see God's wonder in this world around us. If you don't have a Sukkah, come to the JCC and join us for services, or simply come by to sit in the Sukkah. Call me and I can arrange to waive a lulav with you! Z'man Simchateinu (This is the time of our joy!) Rabbi Michael S. Jay THE WEEK THAT WAS... Carl A very special Yom Kippur was experienced at the JCC of LBI with a most inspiring service led by Rabbi Michael Jay & Cantor Avi Green. Saturday morning saw a full house for the Yizkor service and a thought-provoking sermon by Rabbi Jay topped off with his version of "Who Am I?" from Les Miserables. Following the awesome shofar blowing by Tepper & Bonnie Farin, the Sisterhood provided a fabulous Break-the- Fast. Thank you to all those who helped prepare the elaborate spread. Many thanks to all those who helped to make this service so beautiful: our ushers, gabbaim, torah readers and haftorah layners. Special thanks to Carole Nunberg for overseeing the SIMCHAT TORAH Thursday, October 16 6:00 PM Light Supper Served Friday, October 17 9:30 AM YAHRZEITS FOR NEXT WEEK These names will be read at services on October 10, 2014 *Lena Greenwald *Elaine Hirsch *Selma Blacker Daniel Glass Ethel Tarlow Mildred Berman Bertrand Berman *Lynn Kamler Levi *Doris Farin Pauline Sherman Samuel Hoffman Milton Seavey *Casper Ungar Lawrence Fried *Rose Goldstein * Yahrzeit Plaque There are now Yahrzeit Boards which give us an additional 100 spaces.
