FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners, Just recently, we added a new member to our parish staff. Please join me in welcoming Katie Ploch, our new director of religious education. Katie comes to us with strong background in the Catholic faith tradition, and valuable experience working with children and youth. Religious education has as its focus four areas: faith, Sacraments, Christian life and prayer. Faith has to do with an attitude of trust in God and reliance on God s grace, as well as with the content of our beliefs (for example, our belief in the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; our belief in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church, etc.) The Sacraments help us to experience our faith through signs and symbols which lead us to encounter Christ s presence and his saving grace. The Eucharist is an essential focus of our Catholic faith, providing us food for the journey as we live our Christian lives. Christian life refers to morality, learning to distinguish right from wrong, and living according to Gospel values. The Ten Commandments and Christ s Law of Love provide us with a moral compass and enable us to live a life of discipleship. Prayer is an expression of our relationship with God, done both communally (at Mass and other liturgical events) and personally (in our own devotions and prayers of the heart). Prayer is always a response to God s love. What a treasure we have to pass on to our children and youth in our religious education program! Let s take seriously our responsibility to educate our children in the life of faith. God s Blessings, Fr. Annual Financial Report and Budget for St Francis de Sales July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014 Summary- Our Annual Report to Parishioners is being presented in the bulletin to save on postage required to mail to individual households. The results are presented in summarized tables and graphically in a pie chart format. The results reflect $31,583 net income versus $41,743 net loss for the prior year. The majority of the year over year change was attributable to the increased enrollment in our school and tuition assistance from St. Patrick's in Elkhorn. The year over year operating expense was only $15,363 more than the prior year impacted by continued efforts to contain all costs and work towards a balanced operating budget while still providing ministries and maintaining our Parish. Our budgeted total expense for the 2014-15 operating year reflects a increase to expenses of approximately $35,000 as we strive to provide for the ministries we serve and attract and retain the right people necessary to staff them. As a result we are able to project a balanced budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Our heartfelt gratitude to all parishioners for their generous giving, which enables us to maintain and operate our parish in the manner in which we have all grown accustomed. We spent in excess of $100,000 from our capital fund to address some lingering maintenance and repairs that are outlined in the restricted fund transactions below. Our envelope giving was down last year when compared to the prior two years of giving. Please consider your weekly giving in light of our work to combat rising costs while maintaining our place of worship and our current goal of $530,000 for the fiscal year. We realize that current economic conditions continue to impact many families in our parish but we ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we work to keep our parish community vibrant and growing. WHO CARES? The knowledge of our sacred faith passed down through the ages is the subject of this treatise on instructing the ignorant the first of the Spiritual Works of Mercy. No one likes to be referred to as being ignorant. However, omniscience being the opposite, it follows that all humans have areas of ignorance. The knowledge of our faith is no exception. Confusion about the Christian faith and what is necessary for salvation abounds. Fortunately, we have our parish priest whose calling is to shepherd us, instruct us and administer the Sacraments. He has many volunteers that help in the teaching area. Religious Education teachers transmit Catholic values and education to children not enrolled in our nurturing parish school. Then, too, we have generous people lead RCIA classes, Scripture studies and other classes that facilitate our Christian walk. Self help is available in our well-stocked library. Of course, the family is the first and best teacher. Its impact is never erased from one s life. May all our families have empowered parents who put Christ at the heart of their homes. Such instruction in word and deed is life-changing, producing people who care. Submitted by the Human Concerns Committee
