VETERAN S DAY Friday, November 11, 2016, in honor of Veteran s Day, the school and Parish offices will be closed. There will be one Mass at 9 AM in the church.

You probably know that every year on November 11th Americans celebrate Veteran s Day to honor the millions of men and women who served or are serving in the Armed Forces. But bet you didn t know the whole story behind the holiday. For starters, it wasn t originally called Veteran s Day but Armistice Day to commemorate the truce between the Allies and Germany in World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th month of 1918. The first Armistice Day in the U.S. was celebrated on November 11, 1919. All business was suspended for two minutes starting at 11 AM and parades and public gatherings were celebrated to commemorate the occasion. Later America also began honoring its unknown soldiers on Armistice Day a tradition that continues up to today. All 11 AM every Veteran s Day, a color guard Ceremony represents all branches of the military at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1954, the name was changed to Veteran s Day following a national campaign to have a day to honor all veterans not just those who served in World War I. And did you know, for several years Veteran s Day was actually celebrated in October? In 1968, Congress moved Veteran s Day to the 4th Monday of October so that government employees can enjoy a long weekend. But in 1975, President Gerald Ford returned Veteran s Day to November 11 due to the historical significance and that s where it sits in the calendar today. And do you know the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran s Day? Both of them honor all those men and women who have served in the Military but Memorial Day honors America s War dead while Veteran s Day honors All American veterans whether living or dead. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are over 21 Million Veterans in The United States. More than 16 million of these served during times of war while 5.5 million served during peacetime only. So this Veteran s Day, don t forget to say thanks to some of the millions of men and women who have served our country. THANK YOU VETERANS! A CHILD S GIFT Give a little love to a child, and you get a great deal back. John Ruskin Looking for the 2017 Longest Married Couple! Why? Because Worldwide Marriage Encounter, for the seventh year in a row, is conducting the Longest Married Couple Project. What an opportunity to honor couples married 50, 60 or 70+ years! And just maybe a couple you know could be either the state or national winner. Winners will be honored during Valentine s Day Week, 2017. Nominations are open now through January 10, 2017. The nomination process is simple - just email the couple s names, wedding date and city they live in along with your contact information to wwmelmc2017@gmail.com. It's that easy. Or, you can go to the wwmelmc.com website for more information. NOT ENOUGH It is not enough for me to love God if my neighbor does not love God. St. Vincent de Paul FAITH FORMATION * CATECHESIS * PASTORAL OUTREACH * Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC Crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415) 664-8590 Thank you so much The Stewardship Way of Life was well-lived last weekend when the parish observed Commitment Sunday. Heartfelt gratitude to all who shared their time and talent to set up the Ministry Exhibits: Tony Sideco who singlehandedly got all the tables and charis set up at the back of the church; the coordinators who prepared the attractive and informative posters: Nelson Lao & Teresa Lee, Julie Lozano & Ramsey Ramos, Valerie Toy, Susan Logan & Jim Regan, Cecilia Bermudez, Roberta & David Beach, Leo Nascimiento, Pat Relampagos, Lilia & Lito Coloma, Lina Hidalgo, Rose Tang, Hilda & Larry Dela Cruz, Marge Finney, and all who assisted at tables after each Mass. We hope that all these works will bear fruit, shown through more parishioners volunteering and contributing towards a more vibrant faith community at Holy Name of Jesus. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The Inquiry period will give way to the Catechumenate. This new stage of preparation for the Easter sacraments will be marked by the Rite of Acceptance. This rite occurs at a Sunday parish liturgy. The catechumens are signed with the cross on their foreheads, ears, eyes, lips, breast, shoulders, hands and feet as a sign of their readiness to bear witness to Christ with their whole lives. A cross is usually given. Please pray for our two catechumens and their sponsors, who are in their Journey of Faith towards Easter. Volunteers Needed for Religious Education If you could spare or make time on Sunays, 10:30AM to 12:00Noon, please see Sr. Cristina or Hilda Dela Cruz. We need assistants for each class of Religious Education Kindergarten to Eighth Grade. This will help our catechists to focus on teaching and creative activities for the children. We also need another catechist for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children and Youth (RCICY) to help Sr. Cristina with this important program. Thank you for your generous response to the Call to Stewardship of your time and talent. Canossian Religious Family and the Lay Canossians For more information regarding the process of discernment of a Canossian vocation, as Sister, pries, Brother, or lay, please ask Sr. Cristina. We are guided by Charity and Humility, the virtues of Jesus Crucified, given to us by St. Magdalene of Canossa as our Great Model. Mary, Mother of Charity at the foot of the cross as we share life and prayer with one another, and as we serve our less fortunate brothers and sisters, living the Canossian charism. Reflection: A Christian steward is one who receives God s gifts gratefully; cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with all, and returns them with increase to the Lord. -United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Weekly Offering 10/30/2016 11/0/2015 CASH 1,378.00 1,322.00 CHECKS 3,604.00 4,424.00 # #of Envelopes COINS 135 1.31 187 5.66 Total Collection 4,983.31 5,751.66 # of Envelopes 180 201
