NOTICES The Locum Vicar s letter. Today we celebrate the Feast of Matthew Apostle and Evangelist. Matthew was a Jew, probably a Galilean. As a tax collector / gatherer, during the time of the Roman occupation he belonged to a calling which barred him from sharing in Temple worship of the Jews and set him apart in a class disliked by both Jews and Gentiles. In St Mark s Gospel he is referred to as Levi. It is suggested by some that Jesus bestowed the name Matthew upon him after his call, sometime in the second year of his ministry. Matthew one of the twelve is recognised as the probable writer of the first Gospel. He was the son of Alpheus and was called as an Apostle while sitting in the tax collector s place at Capernaum. The Gospel of Matthew was written to fill a need for his fellow countrymen, both believers and non -believers. It was designed to convince them that the messiah had come in the person of Jesus. In November this year I am planning a series of studies titled Uncomfortable Callings where I will explore a number of the Saints and others in the Gospel, particularly Luke, who responded to the call of Jesus. Please mark the dates in your diary now and plan to come along. They will be held in the Guild room between 5-7pm on the 8 th, 15 th, 22 nd and 29 th November. The sessions will be called Pizza, and the Gospels. Other important dates to note are the 4 th October at 12noon for the Blessing of the Animals. This will be held in the Church grounds. Stewardship Sundays are set for the 4 th and 11 th October also. The 1 st November is All Saints day and special arrangements are to be made for this day with a combined celebration at All Saints Kooyong involving the Choir at 10am on the day followed by a parish barbecue. Finally the parish annual meeting is to be held on the 22 nd November commencing straight after the 10am Sung Eucharist. I am happy to visit any parishioner so if you would like a visit just give the parish office a call. Shalom Ray
