2 NOTICES Thank you from the Toorak R.S.L I am writing to thank the Parish most sincerely for the effort and hospitality put into last Sunday s Dawn Service. The Service was most appropriate and moving. It was almost fortuitous that the heavens opened and we were forced inside to give further proof to the well known adage "God will provide." Many came up afterwards and expressed their pleasure at how well the service had gone and how moved they were at the ceremony itself. Please convey our heartfelt thanks to the auxiliary who worked so hard to prepare such a hearty breakfast. To start cooking for seventy odd strangers at 5:30 am takes no small dedication. Their efforts were truly appreciated and the comments really positive. Thank you again. Peter Stokes, Immediate Past President, Toorak Sub-Branch RSL Walk Against Want Jenny Stengard and Barbara Brown will again be doing the Oxfam Walk Against Want this year. They will be in the Guild Room after church on (today), 26 April. If you would like to sponsor them donate, support self-help programs in 29 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific as well as Indigenous Australia. Prayers for Christian Unity Thursday 30 April, 10.00am at The Swedish Church. Announcement Bishop Graeme Rutherford s last Sunday service, here at St John s will be 3 May. The new locum will be Reverend Roger Williams who will preside at services starting Sunday 10 May. Graeme hopes to meet up with parishioners to say farewell, over morning tea in the Guild Room.

3 NOTICES Evening Service From 2015, the Evening Service will take place first Sunday of the month (only) at 5pm in the Angel Chapel, and will include Holy Communion. Breakfast & Morning tea All parishioners are welcome to attend breakfast, straight after the 8.00am service in the Guild Room. Morning tea is served also in the Guild Room, after the 10.00am service. If you are new to St John s, please ask a parishioner for directions. Christians for Biblical Equality Next Saturday, 2 May at St Mark s Forest Hill, 303 Canterbury Road, Forest Hill. Christians for Biblical Equality have organised a lecture with Tim Foster on his new book, The Suburban Captivity of the Church commencing at 9.30am. Cost $20.00 / $15.00 concession.

7 PARISH MAINTENANCE HAPPENINGS APRIL 2015 General maintenance will be occurring around St John s over the next few weeks hence want to keep you informed of the following works:- Hall repairs: Works will commence shortly which will involve scaffolding at the front of the hall. It is expected the repairs will take approx. 2/3 weeks. During this time, as there will be no vehicle access to Toorak Road it would be inadvisable to bring your car into the driveway. Tree pruning: Following the fall of a large tree in front of the hall an arborist was commissioned to report on the health of the rest of our trees. The good news in general the trees are in good health and condition and offer all who frequent the site great amenity. The bad news each tree has some problems requiring attention. These include insufficient water, lack of pruning, proper soil treatment and heavy possum foraging. Possums will always be a problem, so it was decided to not only reinvigorate our trees but also place possum guards on them. Correction will be costly however we will commence a progressive programme and give the project budget priority. It is anticipated work will commence mid-may. Vicarage refit: Inspection revealed the house needed repainting inside and out, carpets, blinds, curtains replaced and bathrooms updated. As there are also a number of minor repairs to be completed the Parish Council decided it would be best to do a complete refit. This should commence early May. Fortunately we can manage this very costly exercise within existing finances. We hope the contractor will commence renovations within 2 weeks, and these should last around 6/8 weeks.

8 Memorial Garden: A few years ago, grass was planted in the Memorial Garden, unfortunately despite the earnest efforts of Trevor, it has not prospered. Our patience is over and a solution will be forthcoming within the next few months. All Saints Church It appears the base of the church, on the eastern wall, has a rising damp problem which due to poor plumbing has probably existed for years. The water from one of the downpipes has nowhere to go but run alongside the church and seep into the brickwork. Work will be required to correct and a contract has been let for this to occur.

10 LETTER FROM RUSTENBURG, APRIL, 2015 Dear Friends, I am still busy with servicing and provisioning in Rustenburg, South Africa. The flight from Australia was late leaving, as it was late arriving in Sydney, and I did not manage to sleep, so was quite tired on arrival in South Africa. It is 14.5 hours flying time from Sydney. The parcel courier who now collects me at the airport had been waiting for some time and it was quite late by the time I arrived in Rustenburg---a two-hour drive from the airport. The Land Cruiser had been started and the engine run while I was away by the friends with whom it stays in Africa, so the engine started well and I then drove to the simple old-fashioned thatched chalets at Bergheim Resort, where I stay, 15 kms from Rustenburg. The farming family who built Bergheim are Christians, and very kind and helpful to me. It is near a small town called Kroondal, which began as a German Lutheran Mission in the 19 th century, and many of the people living in the surrounding area are of German origin, including the owners of Bergheim. In Kroondal there is still the original old mission church, (although a new larger one has been built for worship services), a German school, Aged Care Home with independent units and also frail care, original old mill, (now not functioning) various small shops and places to eat and a supermarket, which sells almost everything, including hardware and whitegoods. This is still owned and run by the same German family who began it many years ago, and the service is excellent. Everything in South Africa has increased greatly in price, including the 25 soccer balls which I have purchased (flattened), packed into 3 large cardboard boxes and which will be carried on my roof rack. I buy them in Rustenburg as they cost 3 times as much in Zambia. The power cuts are more frequent than last year---every other day since I have been here. Many people have generators for their houses, and one day when I was shopping in the Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg, the power was cut, and the small shops simply closed their doors for security. The large ones started their generators and there was reduced lighting, but at least some light and they stayed open. I am pleased I have some solar lamps and a good head torch.

11 There has also been no town water supply in parts of Rustenburg, at least on one day that I know of. I was at a small workshop in an industrial area, and they are on town water. There had been no water all that day, and they told me it was not uncommon now. I am told the town supply is scarcely fit for drinking now, but most people I know have their own borehole, and here at Bergheim, and in surrounding areas, the people have their own water pipes from springs in the Magaliesberg range which is very close. Unfortunately for me, there has been rain since I arrived. My Land Cruiser is not completely waterproof, so has had to dry out, and then last night it rained again, but not so heavily. It has been a dry summer (there is summer rainfall here) and so it was welcome to the farmers, who in some areas, have not been able to plant their mealies (maize), the staple starch here for Africans. I hear from Katete that I shall be able to stay in one of the small units at St. Francis Mission Hospital, but it also will be more expensive. However, the alternative at Mphangwe Motel will also be the same price this year, and at least, at the hospital, I hope to have hot water when I am there! PRAYER POINTS Praise God that I and my luggage (which included 3 laptops for pastors) arrived safely in Rustenburg, and that my Land Cruiser was safe. Please pray for safe travelling on the roads when I drive to Botswana. Please pray for my friends in and around Rustenburg, who help me with preparations here. Pray for a restful, relaxing, and spiritually refreshing time for me when I am alone with the Lord in the Kalahari in Botswana.
