NEWS FROM THE VICAR 1 st July 2013 Dear friends and parishioners, After a week in sunny Paris, and a few very agreeable days prior to that in Dubai, Karen and I have now reached London and settled into an apartment in the thriving Docklands district, which looks a lot like the Melbourne Docklands precinct, being a new, business and residential area, built over disused wharfs and reclaimed docks. It's only fifteen minutes or so on the Jubilee line to central London from here. In Paris we had a very comfortable apartment on Avenue de Suffren in the 7 th arrondissement. We are needing the extra room, as we have Reblekah with us, and also our son Kyle, who is in Europe for the first time and taking full advantage of mum and dad providing the accommodation! On Saturday 29 th June (St Peter s Day) I travelled alone from Paris to London, and on to Oxford, a day ahead of the rest of the family, to attend the ordination at Christ Church cathedral Oxford. At this service, our incoming Assistant Curate and Children s Minister, Kirsty Ross, was ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Oxford, together with her husband Alex, who will become Assistant Curate at our neighbouring parish of Christ Church South Yarra. It was a great joy to represent the Diocese of Melbourne at this service, and to be present at this joyous occasion for Alex and Kirsty, and their families and supporters. It was a beautifully sunny, early summer day, and a grand occasion, followed by a private reception in Pusey House Oxford. Later that day I met up with my own family (Karen, Rebekah, Kyle), back in London, and the following day (Sunday 30 th June) we all attended the 11am service at St George s Hanover Square in London, where Kirsty participated in her first service as a newly ordained Deacon, and I was very pleased to preach the homily on St Luke , with some liberal use of TS Eliot s Four Quartets thrown in - no surprise to any St John s parishioners there! Karen and I then joined Alex and Kirsty, their respective training vicars, and family, at the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall for a long lunch, ending with coffee and tea in the magnificent drawing room, whilst our daughter Rebekah and son Kyle headed off to Oxford Street with our credit cards! At St George s Hanover Square we met a parishioner who works in the theatre and has arranged tickets for us to Les Miserables!

Next week will be spent in Nice, southern France, where we will meet up with parishioner Michael Sedgley and his family, who are also holidaying in the area. We are planning a quiet, relaxing time there, before heading back to Melbourne in time for the Keble Mass on the evening of July 14 th. I will be back on duty the following day, Monday 15 th July, which is also Kirsty s first day with us. As you will know, we all look forward to welcoming Kirsty in a formal way on Sunday 21 st July when Bishop Paul will join us for both services to commission Kirsty for her new role at St John s. It will be a wonderful occasion for the parish, and I hope as many of you as possible will plan to attend to met and welcome Kirsty as she joins us. I very much look forward to being with you again soon, and, in the spirit of the reading from St Luke ch 9, and my homily, last Sunday to putting our collective hands to the plough and, not looking back, following the way of Christ, that his kingdom may come, and his will be done! Brad

The vicar, Brad, preaching the homily at St George's Hanover Square in the Diocese of London, on Sunday June 30th. This was the first service for Kirsty Ross as a newly ordained Deacon, following her ordination the day prior. Kirsty had been placed in the parish for the past year as a student in training.

Messy Church All welcome Buxton Hall First Sunday every month 4-6pm Messy Church is continuing to grow and develop. Most months we are lucky enough to see some new faces. Our regular attends jump in and help with all the craft and activities and the parents are happy to help with the setting up and cleaning after the meal. June saw us complete Joseph and his coloured coat. The young people all coloured in squares filled with paint, colouring pencils and glitter and made the very life size Joseph look fantastic. He is hanging in the back of the Buxton Hall currently if anyone would like to see him! We also made some wooden pyramids, and lots of foam coloured Camels which each child took home with them. In July we will place our artwork onto Noah s Ark and build a Worship altar to take home. We will also be decorating shortbread animal shaped biscuits to share after dinner or eat when we get home. The completed Ark with animals will also be on display the week after Messy Church in the Buxton Hall. As the Winter is finally setting in I would really encourage you to take the plunge and bring the children out on Sunday afternoon for some fun, great food and friendships. Messy Church is Sunday 7 th July 4-6pm dinner included, and we would love to have more people coming to enjoy the time together We are growing in numbers which is fantastic and hopefully is all in God's great plan to help us reach a wider community. St John's has so many committed people who are strong in their Christian faith and I am asking for your assistance. As we grow there are more people of all ages coming with their children, grandchildren and neighbours. To ensure the success of everyone attending and the Word of the Lord being heard we are looking for those who can assist us with delivering this very unique outreach of Gods Spirit at Messy Church. If you can spare 3 hours once a month or even just every now and then, to come and help us at Messy Church, can you please see Nicky Jacob. We are looking for people who can assist with meeting new people, being involved in making the actual craft or activities with everyone or alternatively behind the scenes. Can you help set up? Getting to the Hall around 3.15pm and helping set up tables, prepare food and set up. Can you help clean up? After the dinner at 6pm there are always dishes to wash, toys to be placed away and people to chat to and ensure they feel welcomed and will come again. Clean up takes around 30 minutes from pm.

We have a strong team currently however, as the congregation grows the work will become (hopefully) a lot more and we will need some help! - if you can help out any month by assisting with the cooking, cleaning or set up please talk to Nicky or Brad. Nicky nicolejacob224@gmail.com or call me on just to chat, even if you are thinking about being involved. We now have musical instruments, a guitar player and a vicar who gives a great small service with a genuine message for young children and people of all ages. Please come along to the next Messy Church and see for yourself how Jesus is working in our church. Sunday July 7 th Noah s Ark. Painting animals, building a boat and making shortbread biscuits in the shape of animals as our dessert. We will hear about the great Flood and how God saved Noah s family. Sunday August 4 th Daniel and the Lions. We will be making clay dens, Lions, and Kings crowns. We will be learning a little about what was happening in the town where Daniel lives, his job and his family. Messy Church - is well messy! So we strongly encourage everyone to wear some play clothes that are allowed to get a little mess on them - even though it will all wash off...eventually!

LETTER FROM KATETE, ZAMBIA, JUNE, 2013 Dear friends, I finally got my Land Cruiser back in Maun, and the small oil leak is repaired. Then I discovered that the sender unit for the oil pressure gauge is faulty. I tested the oil pressure with another borrowed unit and found it normal, so I ordered a new gauge and sender unit to be sent to Maun and it will be installed when I return to there from Zambia. I had a very pleasant few days with Christian friends on the Okavango River near Shakawe. I was there on a Sunday, and it was such a joy to worship the Lord with Christian friends. They meet every Sunday and first sing some hymns, and then there is prayer, and finally a bible study. At the moment the group is led by a Lutheran minister who is assisting (with exegesis) the Botswana Bible Society in translating the bible into one of the San (Bushman) languages. Some of you will remember my missionary friends down in the south west of Botswana, who are working on translation into another of the San languages, besides leading the small village church they established. There are many San languages and many of the biblical concepts are quite foreign to the people, even more foreign than to the Bantu (black African) peoples. Translation into these languages is difficult and time -consuming. This minister and his wife and two young sons are having difficulties with their work permit being renewed. The renewal was rejected, with no reason given. There was a back-log of applications, and the immigration official in Maun simply rejected a whole number of applications to wipe out the back-log!! Such can be the way officialdom works in Africa. They are still in the process of their first appeal. Please pray for this appeal to be successful. From Shakawe I drove to Livingstone, a distance of about 620 kms. The road leads north to Namibia and then east along the Caprivi Strip to Katima Mulilo, where I crossed the border into Zambia, about an hour and a half and $220 later. There are numerous items to be paid for, such as visa fee, road tax, carbon tax, 3 rd party insurance etc. etc. Then I crossed the Zambezi River via the Sesheke Bridge, and the road from the bridge to Livingstone (200 kms) was so terrible that it took me 4 ½ hours to drive it. The potholes can stretch right across the road, and some were deep enough for a young giraffe to hide in! Darkness fell and I switched on my spotlights to see the potholes. They did not light up, and I tried to find a loose connection or some reason for this, but without

success. I was devastated, and prayed that the Lord would make them work. Suddenly, the spotlights came on and I thanked the Lord fervently. Some little way further along the road, I was able to pick out a group of elephants crossing the road. Without my spotlights I would not have seen them until almost upon them, and that would have been a disaster for me and my Land Cruiser. The Lord has been most wonderfully gracious to me over the years in answering my prayers in the affirmative. I believe it was Archbishop Temple (a former Archbishop of Canterbury) who said that people told him that positive answer to prayer may be a co-incidence, but he found that when he prayed, co-incidences happened more often! I arrived in Livingstone at 9.30 pm and then next morning, after changing money, filling up with petrol, buying data time for my laptop, and a new sim card and talk time for my phone, drove to Lusaka, another 500 kms, where I stayed with friends for a few days. From Livingstone to Lusaka I experienced some problems with the engine, which was probably due to dirty petrol picked up in Livingstone. So in Lusaka I changed the two petrol filters, which were very dirty, and had several other things checked before driving to Katete. Also in Lusaka I bought the requested number of bibles (some in Chichewa and some in English) from the Bible Society. Next day I went to look for sewing machines in the industrial area with one of the friends I was staying with, to see what was suitable and available, and to check out the quality. I finally bought four for villages which are hand turned, and one for Katete which is both treadle and electric. For the rural villages I decided on the hand-turned machines rather than treadle as they are more compact and easier to move and lock away in a village situation. It is also possible to buy an electric motor for them if electricity ever becomes available. I also bought decent cotton, extra needles and sewing machine oil. The only cotton available in Katete and the surrounding areas is rubbish quality and breaks very easily. The sewing machines are still in the process of being transported to Katete, courtesy of a truck that travels this way. Last year, I paid a fortune for the one sewing machine to be transported from Lusaka to Katete. So this year I have tried to get them a free ride.

The bibles I packed and drove with them in the Land Cruiser. I have never driven with such a heavy load, but transport is so expensive and the one church member who has helped in the past was unable to help this year. So I spent half a day repacking the vehicle so that the heavy bibles were as far forward as possible, put more gear on the roof rack, and pumped up my tyres to the maximum and prayed to the Lord for protection for my tyres, and good judgement in negotiating the potholes on the road to Katete (520 kms east of Lusaka). The road is not too bad, but there are potholes and after Luangwa Bridge it deteriorates. Not only can hitting a pothole destroy a tyre, but coming to a sudden stop could have caused the heavy boxes of bibles to shoot forward and cause damage to me, so you will understand my prayer for good judgement. I am again staying in the Mphangwe Motel, as the newer and better chalet accommodation is too expensive at $30 per night, and the owners would not reduce the cost for a long stay. I found this strange, as I was told that they wanted to encourage church groups to use it, and no church here in Katete could afford that cost. Here at Mphangwe in the very cheapest room I am paying $19, reduced from $24 per night, and I still have problems with the room. There is no mirror, no toilet seat, and the water in the toilet cistern keeps on running out faster than it runs in, so I have to empty a bucket of water in to flush it. I am still trying to get it fixed. Also there is no mosquito net, and I am also still waiting to get one hung above the bed. Everything has increased in price in Zambia, including the bibles. Petrol has increased in all countries, but the price of petrol here is double that in adjoining countries such as Botswana, Malawi, and Namibia. The people are receiving the Jesus Film very well and enthusiastically, but I shall tell you about that and village visits in my next newsletter. May the Lord bless you and keep you in His care, Liz Hawthorne.
