7 LETTER FROM KATETE, JULY, 2015 Dear friends, Firstly, thanks so much to those who gave a donation to assist with my unexpected increased accommodation expenses here. It eased my stress levels enormously, and I am grateful to the Lord for inspiring you to help. My first safari to villages lasted 8 days, and the first village we stayed in was the one where I was sick with malaria last year. It is on the border of the South Luangwa National Park, and literally at the end of the track. My tent was erected in the same place as last year, and again, because there is little shade and it is always hot in the Luangwa Valley, the villagers put up some bamboo and grass shelters on either side of the tent for protection from the sun. While we were there, ten people were baptised in the local river, a tributary of the Luangwa River, which in turn empties into the Zambezi River. Pastor Billy Tembo, who I admire greatly, and a Spirit -led man, baptised them. Earlier, I had noticed a man walking on one leg with the aid of crude wooden crutches, and I enquired as to what had happened to his leg. He was also a spectator at the baptisms, and I learned his story. Some years ago, he had obtained a fishing licence to fish in the Luangwa River, and was with another man standing on the bank, ready to begin fishing from a wooden canoe. A crocodile grabbed his leg, but he held on tightly to the little boat, and somehow the boat turned over and hit the crocodile, causing it to release his leg. Eventually he got to Petauke hospital and his whole leg was amputated. He is a very fortunate young man. Crocodiles usually grab part of an animal (or human) and then, holding tightly to that part, twist and roll, going into deeper water and drowning the victim, before eating it. I told him that I thought God had saved him from that crocodile, so that now, he had an opportunity to put his faith in Jesus, and so be saved for eternity. He is a member of the headman s family. He asked if I could help him to get more comfortable crutches, and I shall enquire at St. Francis Hospital whether I can buy him a pair. They make their own wooden crutches there.

8 We visited the headman and his family, and after introducing ourselves by name, he asked which villages we came from. When it came to my turn, I told him Melbourne, in Australia, and he asked me was there a headman there? I had to think what to say, and then said there was, and that he was called a mayor. He told us that he was pleased that we had visited again, as after we left last year, some people had said our group were Satanists, as I was a muzungu, and I had stayed inside my tent all the time, and was not seen. That really amazed me, and I asked later when we had left the headman, how could that be? I was told that perhaps this lie had been suggested by an N ganga (witchdoctor) to discredit us and the Jesus Film which because Bishop John was also there, (whom I trust with the equipment) was shown without my presence. We were in that village for several nights, showing the Jesus Film, and I gave them a soccer ball, but the Chichewa bibles will have to be given later, as I was only able to get Chichewa bibles in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, after we returned to Katete. There were none in Lusaka. The second village was also in the Valley, and also hot, and I camped under a large fig tree. We showed the Jesus Film in that village on two nights and baptisms also took place there. People who had been preparing for baptism came from several villages, and there were 24 of them altogether. A small local river had been dammed and that is where the baptisms took place. Baptism is always by full immersion, and sometimes the water is not very clean. On both occasions, cattle came to drink in the rivers as we left. The second village has a headwoman, rather than a headman, and she is quite young. She (and her baby) came to see the Jesus Film. One day there, there was great excitement as a snake had slithered out of the grass and up into the chassis of my Land Cruiser. Some boys tried to get it out with a long forked stick, but were unable to succeed, so I do not know what became of it. Maybe it went back to where it came from overnight. I hope so! It was only in the first village that I was able to leave everything outside at night. It is so remote that there are no thieves. In every other village, everything has to come inside my tent at night, and someone has to guard the outside when I am away in the day and during the Jesus Film showing at night. It gets tiring to have to bring inside the tent, the table, chair, gas bottles etc., every night and take them out first thing in the morning

9 when I cook my breakfast. My faithful old tent has to be replaced for next year s mission. It has been repaired many times, (the most memorable being the time an elephant put his tusks through) and the mosquito netting covering the windows has small holes in many places. Because of the village theft problem, I would buy a tent with an enclosed verandah, having flaps with zip fastenings, so I could leave my belongings out in safety. Village thieves here would not open a zip to steal. The electricity supply in Zambia is in dire straits. There are power cuts every day, called load shedding. This also happens in Lusaka, the capital, and friends have told me that businesses are having to buy generators, and sometimes large ones, to cover the power cut times and that the cost of everything is increasing because of that. I discovered that the power cuts are usually at the same time on each day every week, and have obtained the schedule for this area until December. It varies in time every day, and also the number of hours each day, but at least now I can plan. Although there is a generator here where I am staying, I have learned that it is only started up at 6 pm, if there is no power then. Tough if you need electricity during the day! Also, the voltage is very low, now all the time, not just some of the time. There is a small electric kettle here and it takes simply ages to boil because of the low voltage. Now I use my kettle on my gas cooker - much quicker. PLEASE PRAY For those who have been baptised recently, that they will remain faithful to Jesus. For those preparing for our visits, that they will be led by the Holy Spirit. For those who, having seen the Jesus Film, have decided to follow Jesus as Lord of their lives. Pray that they will be strong knowing that an N ganga (witchdoctor) cannot harm them now. May the Lord guard, guide, keep and bless you, Liz Hawthorne
