2 NOTICES Stewardship Currently we are distributing a letter and material for our annual stewardship program. The Church Wardens in conjunction with the Parish Council have decided not to have a full program this year but to ask parishioners to renew their pledges and commitment to St John's and All Saints by completing the forms which have been available in the church over the last couple of weeks, and also sent wherever possible via . We have much to thank God for in our parish life as we continue to pray for a new Incumbent. The locum period provides us with time for reflection and planning for the future. I commend to you this request remembering the many gifts God bestows on us as God's people in this place. Locum Vicar writes, Today we observe the Feast of St Luke. Luke is my favourite Gospel writer. He speaks with an emphasis on the humanity of Jesus while remaining faithful to his divinity and mission. He is probably writing to an eclective community of followers of the Jesus story speaking about the importance of their responsibility to the other and in particular those who were regarded as the outcast as well as the place of women and children. He was born a Greek and a Gentile in Antioch Syria. He was a physician and it is believed he may at some time also been a slave, as it was not uncommon in his day for slaves to be educated in medicine so the family would have a resident physician. He is a good storyteller. Luke became a close companion of Paul of Tarsus and accompanied him on his missionary journey. His Gospel focuses on the poor and oppressed, encouraging tenderness and compassion for the less fortunate. This is seen in his account of the Good Samaritan and in his Sermon on the Plain. Luke also has women playing an important part in the ministry of Jesus, such as Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Martha and Mary. He also writes about the birth of Christ from Mary s point of view in the wonderful words of Mary s song {Luke 1,46} Luke s Jesus calls not the likely or the rich and influential but the unlikely. His Gospel reminds us of our own vulnerability and his emphasis on table fellowship where all are welcome highlights his strong sense of justice and the responsibility of us all to bring to the world the peace of God. Please note the series on the Gospels I will be conducting in November with an emphasis on
3 Luke. Our Gospel readings for 2016 will be from Luke and our studies will help inform us on the context and issues that is the centre of his work. Shalom Ray Visit of Bishop Peter Hollingworth AC OBE We extended a warm welcome to Bishop Peter for being with us today. Bishop Peter will be known to many of you and please join for Breakfast after the 8am service and morning tea after 10am. Our Locum Vicar Canon Ray is away this Sunday. All Saints Day November 1st. Our joint parish gathering to commemorate All Saints and All Souls day is to be held at All Saints Kooyong on the 1st November at 10am with the Choir from St Johns present. Invitations have been forwarded to the families of those whose funeral was conducted during this year at St Johns inviting them to be present and also to have the name of their loved one read out at the services for the day. There will be the normal 8am service at St Johns with a 10am service in the Angel Chapel for those unable to come to All Saints. Following the service at Kooyong a parish barbecue is to be held and we hope as many as possible will stay to join in the celebrations. If you would like the name of a loved one remembered and read out please place the name on the lists in the Church porch. Please note, there will be no 5pm service that day. November Evening Studies, "Pizzas and the Gospels." For 4 Sundays in November commencing on the 8th November at 5pm The Locum Vicar will be conducting a series of studies on the theme of "Calling in the Gospels, the summons of God in the New Testament. The sessions will explore a number of the vocation stories in the New Testament with an emphasis on Luke's Gospel. mark the dates in your diary now. More details shortly.
4 NOTICES The Eucharistic Setting is by Melbourne musician Thomas Heywood. Copies are available from the sides people. [Maybe take two as you enter, so it is easy to give a new-comer the spare copy.] Please return these with your hymn book on leaving. MUSIC TODAY Holy is the true light by William Harris sets text by mystic. Harris main position was as Organist, St George s Chapel, Windsor, where in addition to beautiful miniatures such as the Anthem today, he composed large-scale music including Faire is the heavens. Holy is the true light, and passing wonderful, lending radiance to them that endured in the heat of the conflict. From Christ they inherit a home of unfading splendour, wherein they rejoice with gladness evermore. Alleluia. Agnus Dei Tomas Luis de Victoria VII. Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to do this attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your heart is not carried away with the sound, but offered to God continually; so shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve here, and reward you when he cometh in the clouds of heaven. John Wesley s Directions for Singing in Worship (Select Hymns, 1761). Sunday School Meets every second, fourth and fifth Sundays. Children gather in the kinder after the Collect/short prayer in church. For further information please talk to Jane, Clive or the Clergy. Liz Hawthorne Is back in Melbourne from Africa and will be at St John s next Sunday 25 October at the 8am and 10 am services. Looks forward to catching up!
