Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church May 14, 2017 + 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. Fifth Sunday of Easter As we continue to celebrate the fifty days of Easter, today s gospel includes Jesus promise that he goes to prepare a place for his followers in his Father s house. Our baptism commissions us to share Jesus mission in the world. As First Peter reminds us, we are a holy people, called to proclaim the one who called us out of darkness into light. In words and deeds we bear witness to the risen Christ our way, our truth, our life.

10:30 A.M. LITURGY Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Prelude Sonata, Op. 94 Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1853) iii. Andante Stand and turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. Gathering Hymn This is the Feast / 3 /

Greeting Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Presentation / 4 / BAPTISM

Assembly response: We do. Profession of Faith Renunciation of Evil Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Thanksgiving at the Font The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Baptism After each baptism the song is sung twice / 5 /

Clothing with a White Robe Laying on of Hands Signing with the Cross Presentation of a Candle Welcome Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and the mission we share; join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. Prayer of the Day Let us pray Amen Be seated WORD First Reading Acts 7:55-60 / 6 /

Luke s narrative in Acts now makes clear that besides idyllic success, the apostles encountered also hardship and death. The details of the story of Stephen s martyrdom parallel both Jesus baptism and his crucifixion. Stephen was one of the seven men appointed by the apostles to fill the role of deacon, caring for the poor. Luke also places in his mouth a long speech in which Christ is seen as the replacement of the Jewish temple. Luke s reference to Jesus as the Son of Man allows the persecuted community to trust that at the end of time, Christ will return as apocalyptic judge to vindicate all who have suffered for their faith. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Second Reading 1 Peter 2:2-10 Because the author of 1 Peter hoped in the late first century to console Christians when they faced persecution, chapter 2 describes in a series of positive metaphors the communal life of the baptized. Believers are nursing infants, stones, priests, a unique nation, enlightened by baptism. Typical of early Christians hermeneutic, the author applied to Christ the Old Testament metaphor of the cornerstone. Although the early Christians did not share a political identity, they joined together in the merciful identity of God s people. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation Before the Gospel the entire hymn is sung. / 7 /

Alleluia. I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Alleluia. (John 14:6) Gospel John 14:1-14 Following the Gospel, Stanza 3 is repeated. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. / 8 /

In the first half of the gospel of John, Jesus enacts a sign and then explains its meaning in a discourse. In the second half, often called the Book of Glory, the order is reversed. In the discourses of chapters 14 17, the theologian John is explaining the meaning of the sign narrated in chapters 18 21, which is the death and resurrection of Christ. Jesus death will return him to God, his Father; yet the postresurrection community is comforted, since encountering the Son, which worshipers do weekly, is seeing the Father. Sermon Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Silence Please stand. Hymn of the Day - #389 Christ is Alive! Let Christians Sing Prayers of Intercession After each petition: Lord, in your mercy,, Hear our prayer. Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Be seated. MEAL Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table / 9 /

If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the Refugee One. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Offertory Anthem Leaning on the Everlasting Arms Eric Nelson (b. 1959) What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, leaning on the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, leaning on the everlasting arms. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come. What have I to dread, what have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on the everlasting arms. (Text: Elisha A. Hoffmann, 1838-1929; John Newton, 1725-1807) Great Thanksgiving / 10 /

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin; who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Please repeat responses after the presiding minister. / 11 /

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Lamb of God / 12 /

Be seated. Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion Anthem Come to God with a Grateful Heart Lynn Bailey & Becki Slagle Mayo Silence Come to God with a grateful heart, ready to serve and ready to praise. God made ev rything, all creatures great and small; God loves everyone, and God is Lord of all! God so loved the world, he sent his only Son; Jesus came to share God s love for ev ryone. Please stand. Prayer SENDING / 13 /

Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Blessing Sending Hymn #367 Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds Sending Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Go in peace. Share the good news. Thanks be to God! Postlude Christ ist erstanden Anton Wilhelm Leupold (1867-1940) ( Christ is arisen ) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. Today s Altar Flowers are sponsored by The Mankowski family Baptized Today Hannah Louise Kregor Parents: John & Elizabeth Kregor Sponsors: Robert Milnikel and Jennifer Kregor / 14 /

Summer Worship Times Begin May 28 Beginning on Memorial Day weekend extending through Labor Day weekend there will be one HTLakeview service at 9:30 am. The HTLoop service will remain at 5:00 pm Saturdays SERVICE TIME CHANGE FOR NEXT FALL These are exciting days at Holy Trinity. Worship attendance and congregational giving are both at record high levels. Since last fall, averages at the8:30 and 10:30 services have been 28 and 168, respectively. Several congregational leaders have noticed that our late service is at capacity and it is sometimes difficult to find seats. Church consultants note that when a worship space is filled to over 80% capacity, guests are less likely to return. Since hospitality is integral to the mission of Holy Trinity and because we desire that more people experience our unique liturgy and stance of welcome, the congregation council has approved moving our service times next fall to 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Conversations about such a change began back in 2011. With the recent growth of our congregation, we are poised to make this change in our Sunday schedule. Before we move to our summer schedule of one service, there will be a special coffee hour following the 8:30 service on Sunday, May 21 for conversation regarding the rationale for this change. / 15 /

8:30 am ANTHEM You Are the Way Marty Haugen (b. 1950) You are the way; through you alone can we the Father find; In you, O Christ, is now revealed God s heart and will and mind. You are the truth; your words alone true wisdom can impart; You only can inform the mind and purify the heart. You are the life; the empty tomb proclaims your conqu ring arm; For those who trust you, death and hell shall be no cause for harm. You are the way, the truth, the life: grant us that way to know, That truth to keep, that life to win, whose joys eternal flow. (Text: George W. Doane, 1799-1859, alt.) PSALM 31:1-5, 16-16 Tone In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. Incline your ear to me; make haste to de- liver me. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me. Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, for you are my tow- er of strength. Into your hands I com- mend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O LORD, God of truth. My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. Let your face shine up- on your servant; save me in your steadfast love." / 18 /
