1 Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church September 4, :30 a.m. Lectionary 23c Called to contemplate the cost of discipleship today, we might be helped by translating Paul s request to Philemon into our prayer of the day: Refresh my heart in Christ. Strengthened by the company and forgiveness of the Christ in the blessed sacrament and recalling God s grace in remembrance of baptism, we can be strengthened in this hour to choose life to choose life in God as our own.

Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #783 Praise and Thanks and Adoration The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. WORD This passage is set next to Luke s call to radical discipleship because also Moses anticipates that faithfulness to the covenant will be difficult. We can choose blessings, or we can choose curses. According to the Deuteronomist, God cannot be expected to bless those who chose other commitments. As the community of faith, we are part of the blessing that God gives to one another. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [2]

3 Refrain: The one is blest who, fearing God, walks not where sinners meet, who does not stand with wicked ones, and shuns the scorners seat. Refrain How blest the one who in God s law finds goodness and delight, and meditates upon that law with gladness day and night. Refrain That one is nourished like a tree set by the river s side; its leaf is green, its fruit is sure; the works of such abide. Refrain The wicked, like the driven chaff, are swept from off the land; they shall not gather with the just, nor at the judgment stand. Hopson The cantor first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor sings the verses. Reading Philemon makes clear that Christian ethics has always been debated: Paul is asking that Onesimus be treated now as a brother, not merely a slave; and yet the household codes tell slaves and masters to keep to their places. Thus on many issues both sides of ethical disputes can find some support in the Bible. We hear Paul s counsel for Christians to live in compassion to others and to enact the familial love given them in baptism. This is the only place in the three-year lectionary that appoints Philemon. Gospel Luke 14:1, 7-14 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Christ s call is to countercultural behavior: the society is hierarchical, but the church is to enact a surprising acceptance of the poor, to give to others with no expectation of return. 11 Antiracism Team Meeting Sept 8 HT s Antiracism Team will meet this coming Thursday, Sept 8 at 5:30 p.m. just prior to the council meeting. All are welcome to attend and learn what is happening with antiracism at Holy Trinity. Choir Season Begins Sept 18 The Holy Trinity Choir season begins on Sunday, September 18 with rehearsal in the Choir Room at 9:00 a.m. If you have been thinking about becoming a part of this exciting ministry at Holy Trinity, please join us this year! Rehearsals are on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and the choir sings at the 10:30 service. The schedule is already available for the entire season. Walk to End Hunger CROP Walk Sept. 25 The Chicago CROP Hunger Walk will be Sunday, September 25, We will step off from St James Common, 65 E Huron. 12 Antiracism Workshop What's all this Antiracism/Racial Justice stuff about? If you'd like to learn more about what's happening with Antiracism/Racial Justice work at Holy Trinity and join in the conversation, you are invited to the next Chicago Regional Organizing for Anti-Racism (CROAR) workshop in October. The workshop takes place at Chicago Theological Union in Hyde Park from Oct Early registration (before 9/23) is $75; after that the cost is $105. Speak to Pr. Commemorations for the Week September 9 Peter Claver, priest, missionary to Colombia, died 1654 Born into Spanish nobility, Claver became a Jesuit missionary, and served in present-day Colombia. His ministry was focused on the slaves that arrived there. He gave them food and medicine, learned their dialects, and taught them Christianity. [12]

13 ARISE CHICAGO Arise Chicago builds partnerships between faith communities and workers to fight workplace injustice through education, organizing, and advocating for public policy changes. Arise Chicago is one of Holy Trinity s ministry partners. THE FOUNDATION OF OUR WORK Drawing from sacred scriptures, Arise Chicago upholds the belief that every person is created in the image of God and therefore deserving of dignity and respect, including in the workplace. Arise Chicago was founded in 1991 by a diverse group of religious leaders who created a model to combat some of poverty s root causes (workers being paid improperly, workers receiving less than a living wage, etc.) by bringing the moral voice to both non-union and union workplace struggles. THE ARISE CHICAGO WORKER CENTER The Arise Chicago Worker Center is a membership based community resource for workers, both immigrant and native-born, to learn about their rights and organize with fellow workers to improve workplace conditions. Since opening its doors in 2002, the Arise Chicago Worker Center has collaborated with nearly 2,500 workers to recover over $5 million in owed wages and compensation. ACWC s workplace justice campaigns train workers to know their rights, file complaints with government agencies, organize direct actions, and access legal representation. ACWC boasts the most comprehensive workers rights publication in the state of Illinois (free, and available in English, Spanish, and Polish) regularly distributed throughout the Chicagoland area and provides a unique OSHA-approved popular education-style workshop to hundreds of workers each year. With over 300 low-wage Polish and Latino immigrant worker members, almost half of whom are women, it is the only is the only Chicago-based organization that regularly involves the religious community in its campaigns and is the only worker center in the country with a Polish organizer focusing solely on the Polish community. FAITH AT WORK Arise Chicago plays a unique role in labor organizing and contract campaigns where workers are seeking to leave poverty and advance their opportunities through unionization or improving their existing collective bargaining agreements. The Arise Chicago Faith and Labor Solidarity Center often engages both management and labor to find just solutions to workers struggles to benefit the common good of society. Religious leaders and congregants encourage business owners in their communities to foster policies that are free from coercion, harassment, and intimidation, especially when the workers are seeking to unionize. Arise Chicago s religious leaders bring moral persuasion, support through public statements and prayers, and the support of their religious institutions to workplace struggles. In turn, the campaigns provide a vehicle for people of faith to concretely support the cause of economic justice and lift up a moral voice to bring a fuller measure of God s justice in the workplace. 14 WHAT WE VALUE Our worship is ancient and new We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather for worship to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things we re for Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things we re against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. [14]
